What we don't see on Survivor - VIDEOS

Survivor GabonI've been a Survivor fan since the first season of the show. Now, that was back before widespread broadband internet connections and the official show website mainly had the bios, recaps and some photos. But now it has content there, especially videos, which catch us up on all the things we miss in the 40-odd minutes we see weekly on the television.

In last week's double episode it looks like more show ended up on the editing floor than it did on the show. And I'm here to share some of that with you!

Survivor: Want to See the Elephant Dung? (season premiere)

Jacquie is on the Kota tribe on Survivor Gabon

(S17E01) "Jacquie is awesome!" - Marcus to Charlie

Now, isn't that nice of Marcus, an eye-candy doctor, to say about me? Sigh. Alas, it wasn't about me. I'm not on Survivor Gabon and I don't even spell my name that way. It's a first time namesake on the show for me and she isn't too shabby. However, I can't say that about the entire cast. Tonight was the big two-hour premiere night in Earth's Last Eden. Will this season live up to the quality and excitement of last season? Will Jeff Probst show off his Emmy-winning style? Read on past the jump for my full review of the show.

CBS takes down Survivor diary sale from eBay

Survivor logoEarlier this week we told you about the diaries that Survivor contestant Nicole Delma was selling on eBay. The listing was taken down suddenly and now we know why: CBS asked her to take it down (this has been confirmed by CBS).

The bidding for the diaries somehow, some way, got up to over $2000, then CBS called and asked Delma to stop the sale because it was in breach of the contract she signed. Delma thinks that CBS might have been a little antsy about certain parts of the diaries where Delma describes scenes of the hit reality show being staged and even scenes being re-shot. Of course, this news is nothing new, we've heard talk that certain scenes on Survivor (and other reality show) are re-staged or re-shot for the camera. The only comment CBS would release about the controversy is that they thinking the diaries are "boring" and that they asked her nicely to stop the auction.

Her solution? She's going to release a "novel," because there's nothing in her CBS contract that can stop her from releasing a work of fiction. That's actually kinda clever. I side with CBS on this though, if she did indeed sign a contract that stops her from revealing behind the scenes info.

Survivor contestant puts diaries on eBay for some reason

DelmaWouldn't it be great if a famous Survivor contestant like Richard Hatch or Tina Wesson or...um...one of the other people that won the top prize (Fantasia? Omarosa?) on the show kept a diary during the show and was now going to let fans of the show read it? You'd be able to see what the audition process was like, what it was like staying on the island for over a month, get some cool behind the scenes info about the show. Wouldn't that be great?

Well, that's not available, but until last night you could have read the diaries of Nicole Delma, a contestant from the 2003 "Pearl Island" season of the show. She didn't win the top prize, in fact, she was voted off in the very first episode. But still, those diaries must be really interesting!

Reality TV Newsy Bits

Reality TV Newsy BitsNo, it's not going away. The reality television genre is growing even stronger as it becomes the umbrella for shows ranging from the traditional reality "game" shows like Survivor or The Apprentice, to actual game shows, to real life drama such as The First 48 or Intervention to talent contests and beyond.

What I'll be doing here is taking a look at some of the current newsworthy bits from recently-aired shows, checking out upcoming shows, and sharing the latest reality TV gossip. Is it real or is it just reality TV? As long as I'm entertained, that's all I ask of any show, scripted or not. Are you game? Join me beyond the jump.

Survivor: New cast announced - VIDEO

Survivors ready?Originally, the new season of Survivor had an announced premiere date of September 18. We can scratch that now. It's been changed to two back-to-back episodes on September 25. Don't tell me they're actually thinking ahead and realize that football or something else would preempt the season premiere. It's not like CBS to realize such things!

Jeff Probst will be the host, asking his Probsting questions at Tribal Council. Read on past the jump to check out the new castaways!

Love Connection is not one of the best game shows of all-time

Ken OberAh, another day, another list. This one is from PopCrunch, and it lists the 25 Best Game Shows of All-Time. And yes, it will provoke discussion and hair-pulling.

It's not a bad list actually, as these things go. It's a little predictable (and I certainly wouldn't have included Love Connection, Deal or No Deal, or Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?), but there are some good choices here. Press Your Luck was a great show (though it should be higher on the list), and it's hard to argue with how high shows like Jeopardy and The Price is Right are. I also like that they included The Mole (the first two Anderson Cooper-hosted seasons) and Remote Control.

Reality celebrities and their unfortunate existence

The HillsIn the early days of reality TV as we know it, when the Real World was less of an alcoholic sex romp and more of a genuine social experiment, the "usual" way for talentless people become famous was to either be born into obscene wealth or fall down a well. Or both. Then, some time around the appearance of Survivor Season One, normal folks realized that they could capitalize on exaggerating their personalities on television. "Richard Hatch walks around naked? And he's gay? And painfully manipulative? Yes, I will sacrifice my time and attention to watch your crappy show."

Television producer Mark Burnett sued for $70 million

Excutive producer and reality series creator Mark BurnettExecutive television producer Mark Burnett is being sued by his former business partner Conrad Riggs for $70 million. Burnett, a British television producer, is best known for kick-starting the reality television genre in the United States. He's been on the producer and creator train for shows such as Survivor, The Apprentice, Rock Star, The Contender, Martha Stewart Apprentice, Pirate Master, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, On the Lot (with Steven Speilberg), and more.

So, why is he being sued for the big bucks? Read on past the jump.

The reality stars you love to hate

Spencer PrattThe first reality show contestant I learned to hate was Puck from the San Francisco season of MTV's The Real World. This was actually before people went on reality shows just to be on television and become some sort of celebrity. Oh, what innocent, fun times those were (and I'm serious - the first few seasons of The Real World were quite good).

Puck was actually OK for several episodes, but then he started with the hateful talk, not getting along with his roommates, and the battles with Pedro (though I have to admit that the thing I disliked most about Puck wasn't any of those things, it was the time he stuck his fingers in the peanut butter - gah). Now TV Guide includes Puck in their list of the top 10 reality TV villains. You can probably guess a few of the others. Spencer Pratt is on there (I had never seen or heard of this guy until Letterman's interview last night), Survivor's Jonny Fairplay, and, of course, Omarosa of The Apprentice.

Anyone missing from this list?

(By the way, it actually hurt a little bit to check the "celebrities" category for this post.)

Problems on the set of the next Survivor

SurvivorThey haven't even begun filming yet and already there are problems on the set of the next Survivor.

Production on Survivor: Gabon, which starts filming later this month, has been hit with several problems during preproduction. Problem #1: shipments to the location have been delayed by 30 days. This means that the crew has to stay in tents and not a building. Problem #2: a crane fell over. Problem #3: $100,000 of food has gone missing. And Problem #4: dangerous animals are causing a problem.

Here are the top 20 shows of the season

Network logosWe continue with our roundup of the season-ending ratings (here is the season winner and the May sweeps winner) with a list of the top 20 shows for the season. The first two shows aren't going to be a surprise to anyone (though the number of times one show shows up on the list might be surprising to some). How many shows on this list do you watch? I watch one show all the time and I watch another show a little bit. The other 18 1/2 shows I don't watch at all, which is odd because I watch a ton of television every week.

Only one sitcom made the top 20, and there was only one show from NBC. Do you know what those two shows are? Answer after the jump.

(Oh, I know The CW logo is in the pic above, but you won't find any of their shows on the list.)

CBS wins May sweeps

CBSIf you look at the Nielsen ratings each week, where you see shows like Survivor, NCIS, all of the CSIs, Two and a Half Men, 60 Minutes, Without A Trace, and Criminal Minds consistently in the top 20, this probably won't come as a surprise: CBS has won this year's May sweeps period.

This is the sixth year in a row that the network has won the period. It also helped that CBS had some big specials this year, including the Academy of Country Music Awards. And here's an interesting little factoid: CBS has the number one scripted show on five different nights: CSI: Miami on Mondays, NCIS on Tuesdays, Criminal Minds on Wednesdays, CSI on Thursdays, and Numb3rs on Fridays. The number one scripted show on Sundays is Desperate Housewives. As for Saturday, who the hell knows what's going on that night.
