She saved John Connor, but can she boost the ratings for another struggling Fox sci-fi show?
Former
Terminator fembot Summer Glau joins Joss Wheodn's
Dollhouse on Oct. 30 for a recurring stint as Bennett, a programmer who shares a past with Eliza Dushku's Echo. During last week's episode of
Dollhouse, the network hyped Glau's upcoming appearance with a
special promo promising, "In three weeks, Sumer Glau joins the cast of
Dollhouse!" I could be wrong, but it seemed like Fox was banking on Glau's star power to get more people to watch the show. Sadly, I don't think that's gonna happen.
I love Summer Glau. I was a big fan of
TSCC and
Firefly, and I'm eagerly anticipating her appearance on
Dollhouse. I'm sure Whedon has crafted an interesting character for Glau, and I'm sure she'll be part of a compelling arc that will fold nicely into the
Dollhouse mythology. But I doubt she'll be able to attract a ton of new viewers.

(S02E03) It looks like the production schedule had this one slated to be the second episode of the season, rather than the third. It was a little odd how much time was spent in showing Ballard getting used to the complete process in turning a Doll into an Active. I kept thinking, "He was fine with last week's mommy engagement?" Knowing that this was intended to be the first episode after he took on the role as her Handler makes more sense.
It also means FOX is screwing around with Whedon's intended schedule on his show ... again! I can't understand how network executives think narrative flow between episodes means nothing. Do they think that fans are so stupid we can't follow a thread between episodes, nor will we notice when things are out of whack?
This would probably have worked better as a second episode anyway, because it got a little more into the technology behind the Dollhouse, as well as how it can go wrong.

In last week's
season premiere of Dollhouse, we learned that the usually empty-headed Echo is becoming self-aware and is now able to access memories from her many personality imprints.
This puts her in a very dangerous place, star Eliza Dushku told reporters during a conference call this week. While a self-aware Echo might be more fun and challenging for an actor to play than a "dumbed down Doll," Dushku reminded us that any sign of Echo's evolution in the Dollhouse might get her sent to "the attic," aka Doll hell.
The vulnerable Echo will be looking for allies this season, Dushku said. She and former FBI agent Paul Ballard (Tamoh Penikett) "may possibly be trying to bring down the Dollhouse from the inside," she teased. During the conference call, Dushku also talked about the unaired first season episode, "Epitaph One," working with Summer Glau, and she teased more origins and back stories for the show's other characters.

When I first started exploring this project, there were a few shows that I knew were going to be important to hit. This is the first of those.
Firefly was
Joss Whedon's sci-fi western series. The show mustered disappointing ratings in its short eleven-episode run on FOX.
Since then it's gone on to near mythic cult status. There was such an outcry of support from its loyalists, the Browncoats, over its cancellation that the producers made a feature film sequel. That movie,
Serenity, answered a lot of questions about the future fate of the cast. Unfortunately, like the television series, it couldn't find quite enough people to show up and tune in to warrant a sequel. Nevertheless, the few morsels of
Firefly we did get are enough to prove that this is one of the most innovative and enjoyable series ever to hit the airwaves.

Earlier today, we told you about
Summer Glau landing a recurring role on Joss Whedon's
Dollhouse. Glau, of course, has worked with Mr. Whedon before on the much loved but short-lived
Firefly and its film spinoff,
Serenity.
This isn't the first time Whedon has cast actors he's worked with before in a new project; he does it all the time. But like Squad commenter "davem" pointed out, actors who return to the Whedonverese for a second go-round usually end up playing villains.
So does this mean Glau is destined to be the new big bad on
Dollhouse?

Fox has confirmed that Summer Glau is heading back to work for
Firefly/Serenity creator Joss Whedon with a recurring role on
Dollhouse.
Whedon
told EW in May that he was writing a part for Glau, but he didn't spill any details about her role on the show's upcoming second season. He said he didn't want her to play a "Doll," because that would be too obvious. Now, after a few
early reports hit the web, Fox has offered up some details about Glau's connection to the Dollhouse.
Will she be playing a Dollhouse client? An active? A cyborg? ... OK, she's definitely not playing a cyborg this time. (At least we don't think she is.) Head after the jump for the answer.

I'm not sure how many people watched both
Dollhouse and
The Sarah Connor Chronicles, though both were on Friday nights at the end, so they probably had a lot of fans in common. If you were a fan of the latter show, this news might ease the pain of knowing that show will not be returning in the fall.

I'm almost to the end of
Firefly, my
Jane After Dark readers' choice for this week. I really love this series, from the quirky characters to the general theme of a band of renegades burgling their way through the universe.
But even though it's set 500 years in the future,
Firefly isn't your typical sci-fi space series that includes all manner of aliens and weird creatures. They're on a spaceship, and yet they rob trains. How cool is that?! It's like
Alias Smith and Jones meets
Babylon 5.
As with the other Whedon shows I've watched –
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and
Angel – the stories are fun and deep and fanciful (yes, I said fanciful), but it's the characters and their interactions that make the shows.

Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is reporting (from various sources he has skulking around the television world) that
FOX is just about to cancel The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The
ratings haven't been great for the sci-fi show. FOX paired it with
Dollhouse on Friday nights and there has been no reason to keep the show alive for another season (ratings-wise, anyway - I'll leave it to the fans to judge the quality of the show itself). Things don't look that great for
Dollhouse either, but that's another story.
Officially, the network won't announce its fall schedule for another month or so, at their annual upfront presentation. Unofficially, you probably shouldn't look for the show on that fall schedule. Now I guess we'll just have to wait for the premiere of the movie
where Christian Bale yelled at everyone.

(S02E21) Wow. Just, wow! This was one of the best episodes of the season. It was also one of the most heartbreaking episodes of the entire series.
I loved everything about this ep -- the pacing, the storytelling, and the surprises. It was all great. But did I mention the heartbreak? Click through for the spoils.

John Connor finally earned my respect. Did he earn yours?
This episode might have started out telling Jesse's story, but it was really about John and why he's destined to become the savior of humanity. Jesse has been scheming all season to turn John against Cameron and trusting reprogrammed "metal." Mistakenly, she assumed that John's decision to employ Terminators in the resistance was influenced by an emotional attachment he had to the machines.

This was a crazy episode. Basically, it seemed like a half-hour long ad for
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Summer Glau guest-starring and the guys not being able to keep their fanboy-ness at bay makes total sense, except for the fact that
Big Bang Theory is on CBS, and
Terminator is on FOX. It's rare that you see that much cross-network love going around, so that was strange, but interesting.
Now, I don't watch
The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but I did see the pilot, so Summer Glau's robot affectation on that series made some sense to me. She's playing herself on this show, though, so what's her excuse? She wasn't given very many lines, but everything she said was so flat and emotionless that it would have made more sense for the plot if they had just explained that she's really Method and never breaks character. But they didn't, so it was just... bad.

(S02E17) It feels good to have our show back, doesn't it? After taking a mostly tedious three-episode trip inside of Sarah Connor's head,
TSCC returned with a solid ep that addressed Riley's suicide attempt and featured Cameron getting a little twitchy. "Ourselves Alone" was light on Skynet conspiracy theories, but it delivered some definite payoff for one of the season's most talked about plot lines. Click through for the spoils.

I have mixed feelings about CBS'
The Big Bang Theory. Being a geek, it feels a little strange watching a sitcom that wants to cater to you and make fun of you at the same time. I find myself wincing at the lazy geek caricatures on display every time I watch, but for every wince, there's always a laugh. The show is funny, and I like that none of the plots ever really seem to add up to much. It's all about the jokes, and it reminds me of
Seinfeld in that way.
Now I have another reason to watch. Summer Glau, Cameron from
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, will
guest star in an upcoming episode of TBBT. Glau won't be playing a robot – that would be too cool – she'll be playing herself. From what I can decipher from other Interweb rumblings, the episode will feature Sheldon, Leonard and crew somehow rerouting Glau's train trip to San Francisco in order to meet her. (Reminds me of Raj and Wolowitz's plan to find the
Next Top Model house from last night's ep.) The episode airs March 9.
