The September 21 show, telecast on ABC, will not only celebrate the Best Actresses and Best Dramas of the current prime time lineup, it will also celebrate the many stars and characters and shows of 10, 20, 40, 60 years ago.

ABC has created an ad that features a lot of those stars. A lot of the stars are easy to find and it's a no-brainer that they were included (Marge and Homer, Rod Serling, Dick Van Dyke, Stewie, the South Park guys, etc), but I'm happy to also see some people I didn't think would be in such an ad: Guy Williams as Zorro, Robert Culp from I Spy, Mike Connors from Mannix, Tim Daly from Wings, Wally Cox from Mr. Peepers, among others.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Daily Show: August 14, 2008 - VIDEOS

Filed under: OpEd, Video, The Daily Show, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
"All the Gori Details": Russia and Georgia's conflict rages on, even though everyone else is playing pool games at the Olympics. President Bush and company seem to think that this sort of conflict is, like, so old. The show managed to perfectly nail Condoleezza Rice's disapproval of overthrowing government. As it turns out, the allegations about Senator John Edwards having an affair with his former videographer were true. True! Over the weekend, I was briefly intrigued, but then found myself staring intently at her interesting fashion choices. I recall seeing her in a black top with a sequined peace sign at one point. Classy. As for me, superficial? Naturally, drilling is a hot topic in the current presidential race. The media has also been making a big deal out of Obama's suggestion that citizens check their tire pressures, as adjusting to proper numbers does some nice-nice things to gas mileage. Leave the lolz-making to Daily Show, Fox News. Also, I don't believe the remark about Oedipus and President Bush created quite the mental image that they intended. What was that business about kissing with toothpaste in his mouth? Man, if only fangirls kept track of Jon's Q&A stories as closely as the Stephen Colbert's.

"Indecision 2008": John McCain's getting a lot of attention for his attack ads against Barack Obama. The coverage will never, ever end about the celebrity ad, because people love talking about Paris, Britney, and Barack, no matter how much they deny it. Talk about over-analyzing this nonsense. There's no doubting that race is an issue in this... race, but the media is definitely reading too much into the small stuff.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Stephen Colbert to have new species named after him

Among other things, he's had an ice cream and a hockey team mascot named after him, and now Stephen Colbert once again proves his influence on pop culture by having a new species of spider named after him. The new spider species in question was discovered along the coast of California and will be called Aptostichus (ap-TAS'-tih-kus) stephencolberti.

Colbert has quite the following. I recall not even getting close to seeing him when he appeared at a previous New York Comic-Con to promote his comic book. Via satellite from their New York studios was CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric, Face the Nation moderator Bob Schieffer, senior political correspondent Jeff Greenfield, and CBS News and Sports president Sean McManus.

Right away, a reporter brought up Katie Couric's job status. "I'm glad you got right to it," Couric joked. "I thought [the speculation] had died down considerably." She said she "can't control what media writers write. We live in an echo chamber," with media reporters more fascinated by her status than the general public is. "The attention befuddles me," she continued. Oh? You mean, it's not that Rush?

That's right. The Colbert Report has booked Rush to appear Wednesday night (11:30 PM/EST). That's Rush the band, not Rush Limbaugh, the radio yapper. Limbaugh would no doubt have been the butt of countless jibes -- assuming he would even submit to the possibility of being kidded -- but he's not coming on the show.

Rush, the Canadian band, will not have to worry about Colbert's rapier wit. They're coming on the show to sing.

This is a real feather in the cap for The Colbert Report. Rush has not appeared on American TV in over 30 years, and they're going to perform "Tom Sawyer," their most-famous song.

Stephen C. has been embracing the music this summer. In addition to Rush, Nas is going to perform on July 23, Toby Keith on July 28, and Crosby, Stills and Nash (no Young -- although he has appeared in the past on the show) on July 30.

Is this a trend away from comedy for The Colbert Report or just injecting some variety into the format? I think it's the latter, and as long as I like the musical act, I'm okay with it.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Has Daily Show withdrawal kicked in yet? - VIDEOS

Filed under: OpEd, The Daily Show, Celebrities, Reality-Free

We are nearing the end of The Daily Show's two-week hiatus, but I'm suffering from a serious case of the political commentary shakes. In a desperate attempt to curb my withdrawal symptoms, I spent most of July 4th cracking jokes about the FISA Bill, but nobody wanted to hear it and drowned me out with lots of Roman Candles and exploding beer cans. Hopefully, other fans have been coping better than I have, but just in case you aren't, here are a few things to hold you over a few more days.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Nine people who must host SNL next season

Filed under: OpEd, Saturday Night Live, Celebrities, TV Squad Lists, Reality-Free
If there were a way to completely stop people on the Internet from saying, "Why do you keep watching this? Saturday Night Live hasn't been good since the days of Gildaphil Belushikroyd Normfeyrrell!", I would punch that button (or that person). Thinking a little more optimistically, there can always be better days ahead, for SNL is forever renewable, with an ever changing cast and crew. The thing that gets the fastest turn-over is the host, who has the opportunity to bring something new and exciting from week to week.

Now that the so-so 33rd season is over, I like to pretend everyone at SNL has kicked aside all the beach time and BBQ invites to plan something exciting for their return. Picking good hosts is an important part of having a successful season, so I've compiled my own list of nine people that must host, just in case SNL decides to re-work the entire show based on blog responses. I'm just covering all my bases, all right?

Gallery: Saturday Night Live: 2007 - 2008
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/saturday-night-live/812350/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/saturday-night-live/812365/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/saturday-night-live/812366/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/saturday-night-live/900664/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/saturday-night-live/812369/">

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Daily Show: June 23, 2008 - VIDEOS

Filed under: OpEd, The Daily Show, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
"Indecision 2008": The Daily Show hasn't really mocked Barack Obama quite as heavily as the likes of John McCain or Hillary Clinton. In fact, they have made fun of the media's wild, paranoid speculation about Obama more than Obama himself. It was good to see them pick on him a bit for his rather presumptuous faux-Presidential seal, which was quickly pulled and called a "one-time" thing. I loved how most of the audience was too nervous to mock their man. "You know... You're allowed to laugh at him." Also, Barack Obama seems to have made a bit of a flip-flop recently, turning his back on public finance and calling it corrupt, despite showing his support earlier in the race. I hope he flip-flops more if it means seeing John Oliver as Matthew Lesko again.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Daily Show: June 19, 2008 - VIDEOS

Filed under: OpEd, The Daily Show, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
"Baracknophobia": The irrational fear of hope is spreading, even among Barack Obama's own people. Obama campaign staffers sent away two women with head scarves because they didn't want to remind people at the photo op about the rumors of Obama being Muslim. Not as bad as the baby-punching, I must say, and at least he apologized.

"Guantanamo Baywatch": The Supreme Court ruled that prisoners in Guantanamo Bay can contest their detention before a judge. Some folks aren't too happy about this, what with their poor Mexican topiary managers having fewer rights and all. The managers are Mexican, by the way, not the topiaries. Senior Imprisoned Correspondent, Gitmo, stopped by to share his thoughts. Man, Jon Stewart is really no good with puppets. Reporters are already looking for the most dramatic ways to demonstrate the severity of the situation, and President Bush is obviously dreading a visit to the disaster area. Correspondents Jason Jones and Wyatt Cenac reported from a flooded scene, just to dig up some of that dated "George Bush doesn't care about black people" stuff. I guess they had to do it now, as mentioning it in the next night's episode may have been a little weird, what with Mike Meyers being the guest and all. I'm waiting for Wyatt to do his own correspondent field report before I decide how I feel about him. I'm kind of liking his perpetual angry-face, though. And did the audience know for what they were applauding? With Barack Obama and John McCain dominating the news, Bush has taken a little vacay to Europe, because he's pretty much the only American who can afford to do so at this point. When he wasn't giving massages or trying the classic "yawn and stretch" on the Chancellor, he attempted to convince the German press that he's not actually a fan of war and it was his own rhetoric's fault for making it seem otherwise.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Daily Show: June 9, 2008 - VIDEOS

Filed under: OpEd, The Daily Show, Reality-Free
Have you heard?! Full episodes of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are now available for streaming! These will be available on Hulu, as well as players on the show's official sites (The Daily Show and The Colbert Report). Only the most recent few weeks will be available in full episode format, but the broken up clips that I have been embedding in these posts will be around forever, so that's what I'm going to keep putting in here. This is a fantastic, convenient feature... for the Americans that can access it. Sorry, Canada. Close, but no cigar.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Who is the funniest person in America?

When you think of funny people in America, who do you immediately think of? Stephen Colbert? Robin Williams? Chris Rock? Matt Stone and Trey Parker? How about David Letterman or Dane Cook?

Some of the people above are on Entertainment Weekly's list of the 25 funniest people in America (two of the people above aren't on the list, nor should they be!). Some of the choices are downright baffling (as usual for these lists): Augustun Burroughs? Please. Diablo Cody? Good writer, but one of the funniest in the country based on Juno? But it's good to see the Sedarises on there (both David and Amy), as well as people like Tina Fey and Demetri Martin. There are even two current cast members of Saturday Night Live on the list. Can you guess who they are?

Once you read the list, you can go into the comments and say "why the hell is _________ on the list?!?"

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Daily Show: May 29, 2008 - VIDEOS

Filed under: OpEd, The Daily Show, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free
John McCain wasn't the only one to have his medical history thrown into the spotlight. Barack Obama's doctor analyzed his health and released a one-page report on how muscular and lean he is. No, it's not nearly as long-winded nor as sexy as McCain's crazy 1,200 page report.

Still-President Bush (I think I will start referring to him as such, as well) paid a visit to the US Air Force Academy's graduation and had a little fun with some soldiers on this celebratory day. I'm surprised there weren't any MySpace poses in this collection of poses from the day. This would be so much more endearing if there wasn't always that underlying tone of evil in everything he does. I'm just sayin'.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Nuttiest Fans Award nominees

Filed under: Awards, Reality-Free, TV Squad Awards
If we have learned anything, it's that there's a big difference between being a casual viewer and a truly passionate fan. Whether that means spreading the word, doing charity work in the name of the show or just plain being crazy, fans of TV programs have found various ways to show their love. After some intense responses in the call for considerations post and deep deliberation within the TV Squad team, we have boiled down the list of shows with the most dedicated fanbases. Here, we have five of the finest contenders, each of them deserving recognition for their fans' contributions.

Yes, it's obvious that there will be fans angry at the results, regardless of who wins. American Idol fans, form an orderly queue and meet me in the parking lot. But before we have an epic throwdown, read after the jump and vote for the Readers' Choice.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Ten Colbert clips you probably haven't seen - VIDEOS

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Video, The Daily Show, Celebrities, TV Squad Lists, Reality-Free
Hardcore Stephen Colbert fans might take one look at this list and scoff. To them I say, "Hey, girls who live on the Colboards, chill out." This list is meant for the casual fan of The Colbert Report, who loves the show and, at most, knows Colbert's history through The Daily Show and maybe a little Strangers with Candy.

As someone who has been a fan of Colbert for about eight years, I'm here to educate, here to spread the good Word. It is the duty of a good fan -- especially one with too much time on her hands -- to change the minds of people that see Colbert just as the TV blowhard who happens to share his name.

Gallery: Pre-Report Colbert
<a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/pre-report-colbert/819124/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/pre-report-colbert/819126/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/pre-report-colbert/819121/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/pre-report-colbert/819117/"><a href="http://"www.tvsquad.com"/photos/pre-report-colbert/819118/">

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
