If there were a way to completely stop people on the Internet from saying, "Why do you keep watching this?
Saturday Night Live hasn't been good since the days of Gildaphil Belushikroyd Normfeyrrell!", I would punch that button (or that person). Thinking a little more optimistically, there can always be better days ahead, for
SNL is forever renewable, with an ever changing cast and crew. The thing that gets the fastest turn-over is the host, who has the opportunity to bring something new and exciting from week to week.
Now that the so-so 33rd season is over, I like to pretend everyone at
SNL has kicked aside all the beach time and BBQ invites to plan something exciting for their return. Picking good hosts is an important part of having a successful season, so I've compiled my own list of nine people that must host, just in case
SNL decides to re-work the entire show based on blog responses. I'm just covering all my bases, all right?

"Indecision 2008":
The Daily Show hasn't really mocked Barack Obama quite as heavily as the likes of John McCain or Hillary Clinton. In fact, they have made fun of the media's wild, paranoid speculation about Obama more than Obama himself. It was good to see them pick on him a bit for his rather presumptuous
faux-Presidential seal, which was quickly pulled and called a "one-time" thing. I loved how most of the audience was too nervous to mock their man. "You know... You're allowed to laugh at him." Also, Barack Obama seems to have made a bit of a
flip-flop recently, turning his back on public finance and calling it corrupt, despite showing his support earlier in the race. I hope he flip-flops more if it means seeing John Oliver as Matthew Lesko again.

"Baracknophobia": The irrational fear of hope is spreading, even among Barack Obama's own people. Obama campaign staffers sent away
two women with head scarves because they didn't want to remind people at the photo op about the rumors of Obama being Muslim. Not as bad as the baby-punching, I must say, and at least he apologized.
"Guantanamo Baywatch": The Supreme Court ruled that prisoners in Guantanamo Bay can contest their detention before a judge. Some folks aren't too happy about this, what with their poor Mexican topiary managers having fewer rights and all. The managers are Mexican, by the way, not the topiaries. Senior Imprisoned Correspondent, Gitmo, stopped by to share his thoughts. Man, Jon Stewart is really no good with puppets. Every voice he does sounds like

New discoveries on Mars make room for coke jokes and groantastic puns.
There Will Be Flood"/"Wet Hot American Bummer" (HA!): Much of the
Midwest is currently underwater, due to storms, failing levies and acts of not-God. Reporters are already looking for the most dramatic ways to demonstrate the severity of the situation, and President Bush is obviously dreading a visit to the disaster area. Correspondents Jason Jones and Wyatt Cenac reported from a flooded scene, just to dig up some of that dated "George Bush doesn't care about black people" stuff. I guess they had to do it now, as mentioning it in the next night's episode may have been a little weird, what with Mike Meyers being the guest and all. I'm waiting for Wyatt to do his own correspondent field report before I decide how I feel about him. I'm kind of liking his perpetual angry-face, though. And did the audience know for what they were applauding? It sounded like more blind, trained seal clapping.

"George Walker Bush: Still President": We've still got seven months before the era of President Bush is officially over. With Barack Obama and John McCain dominating the news, Bush has taken a
little vacay to Europe, because he's pretty much the only American who can afford to do so at this point. What's up with Bush getting super touchy-feely with German Chancellor Angela Merkel?
Has he learned nothing? When he wasn't giving massages or trying the classic "yawn and stretch" on the Chancellor, he attempted to convince the German press that he's not actually a fan of war and it was his own rhetoric's fault for making it seem otherwise.

When you think of funny people in America, who do you immediately think of? Stephen Colbert? Robin Williams? Chris Rock? Matt Stone and Trey Parker? How about David Letterman or Dane Cook?
Some of the people above are on Entertainment Weekly's list of the 25 funniest people in America (two of the people above aren't on the list, nor should they be!). Some of the choices are downright baffling (as usual for these lists): Augustun Burroughs? Please. Diablo Cody? Good writer, but one of the funniest in the country based on Juno? But it's good to see the Sedarises on there (both David and Amy), as well as people like Tina Fey and Demetri Martin. There are even two current cast members of Saturday Night Live on the list. Can you guess who they are?
Once you read the list, you can go into the comments and say "why the hell is _________ on the list?!?"

John McCain wasn't the only one to have his medical history thrown into the spotlight. Barack Obama's doctor analyzed his health and released a one-page report on how
muscular and lean he is. No, it's not nearly as long-winded nor as sexy as McCain's crazy 1,200 page report.
Still-President Bush (I think I will start referring to him as such, as well) paid a visit to the US Air Force Academy's graduation and had a little fun with some soldiers on this celebratory day. I'm surprised there weren't any MySpace poses in this
collection of poses from the day. This would be so much more endearing if there wasn't always that underlying tone of evil in everything he does. I'm just sayin'.

If we have learned anything, it's that there's a big difference between being a casual viewer and a truly passionate fan. Whether that means spreading the word, doing charity work in the name of the show or just plain being crazy, fans of TV programs have found various ways to show their love. After some intense responses in the call for considerations post and deep deliberation within the TV Squad team, we have boiled down the list of shows with the most dedicated fanbases. Here, we have five of the finest contenders, each of them deserving recognition for their fans' contributions.
Yes, it's obvious that there will be fans angry at the results, regardless of who wins.

As someone who has been a fan of Colbert for about eight years, I'm here to educate, here to spread the good Word. It is the duty of a good fan -- especially one with too much time on her hands -- to change the minds of people that see Colbert just as the TV blowhard who happens to share his name.

Just spending five minutes in a random pop culture convention is enough to make anyone realize that fans can be scary. Very, very scary. Of course, being a fan can mean more than just dressing up as a show's most scantily-clad character and wandering around a convention center. It really depends on how you define fan-dedication.
Is it all about making an actual impact when one's favorite show is in trouble? Then take into consideration the determined fans of
Jericho, who made their voices heard through a bizarre
peanut plan and managed save their beloved program (albeit briefly). Or perhaps being a fan is all about spreading the word.
The Colbert Report's dangerously devoted Colbert Nation has spread Stephen Colbert's name and persona throughout the world, from minor league hockey teams to Hungarian bridges to the
Time 100. There are also the hard-working fans of shows like
Lost, who spend incredible amounts of time breaking down each and every possible clue and theory. I dare say they work so much, they often get ahead of the writers. And then there are those fans that patrol the Internet for any negative remarks about their favorite shows and then pounce when they sense fan-injustice. Just last month, our own
Jonathan Toomey risked facing the wrath of
Battlestar Galactica fans to express his opinion, and he is braver than I for doing so.
Also, keep in mind how the strike-induced TV drought gave fans the opportunity to show their support and demonstrate their dedication to their favorite shows and creative minds. Think about some stand-out moments in which fans rallied together to make that depressing time a little bit more bearable.

West Virginia happened and Hillary Clinton totally crushed Obama in the state's primary. It may have had something to do with her hard work, her working class base, or because a lot of West Virginians are xenophobic. It's Obama's own fault for being a super-secret Muslim. In other news, the "I don't like the 'Hussein' thing" lady hurt my soul.

(S01E7) Originally aired on April 30, 1996.
It's easy to forget just how funny this show was. It's not just that it had a bunch of funny material and a talented cast (including Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, and Robert Smigel), it's that the batting average for each show was damn good. There's more funny stuff in each 30 minutes of a Dana Carvey Show episode than in 90 minutes of Saturday Night Live or even SCTV. No dead moments to sit through. I'm not sure why this show was so short-lived (other than the fact that the first episode featured Carvey as President Clinton, suckling a bunch of cats on his teats). And ratings, ratings, blah, blah, blah.
It was actually kinda hard to pick a standout episode since so many episodes have a lot of great stuff. But I think the video after the jump has some classic moments.

You Don't Know Dick": It's about time for another segment! I was worried they had run out of wacky things about our VP.
The Today Show's Meredith Vieira stopped by Dick Cheney's house, which doesn't look quite as pixelated in person, to show the world just how rich and creepy his home is. Abandoned children's toys and lonely swings aren't exactly inviting images. The most amusing part of this was not the sneak peek at the Cheney household (although I'm sure you loved it), but the sheer terror evident in the audience's reactions to any mention of "nude, pixelated Cheney genitalia". That's actually the name of my new emo band.

Star Wars day ("May the Forth by with you"). The beginning of May also saw the anniversary of President Bush's flightsuit-tastic "Mission Accomplished" banner unveiling. Yeah, it doesn't hurt any less. White House spokeswoman
Dana Perino attempted to ease the bitterness by admitting that the banner should have been more specific, stating, "Mission accomplished for these sailors who are on this ship on their mission." Jon also managed to call me out as one of the "font crazy" home viewers, because I made a weird face as I thought, "I'm pretty sure Times Courier isn't a real font..."
