No, it's not going away. The reality television genre is growing even stronger as it becomes the umbrella for shows ranging from the traditional reality "game" shows like
Survivor or
The Apprentice, to actual game shows, to real life drama such as
The First 48 or
Intervention to talent contests and beyond.
What I'll be doing here is taking a look at some of the current newsworthy bits from recently-aired shows, checking out upcoming shows, and sharing the latest reality TV gossip. Is it real or is it just reality TV? As long as I'm entertained, that's all I ask of any show, scripted or not. Are you game? Join me beyond the jump.

Well, she's making over America one salon at a time. The former
Shear Genius contestant will be saving America's hair stylists in
Tabatha's Salon Takeover. She'll visit salons on both coasts that are in dire need of her direction. Coffey has just a week to work her magic.
This is the "hair version" of
Kitchen Nightmares. The press release goes on to say that her comments are mean and jarring. The salon owners and employees probably won't like her at first. But they'll realize that it's her passion and intensity that "drives her sincere quest to turn these salons around." After one week with Coffey, who started as a salon assistant when she was 14-years-old, we'll see dramatic results. Coffey will also recommend people to be fired and tell some of the better stylists that they should raise their rates.
Kitchen Nightmares, right? I'm not saying I wouldn't give this a try though. I like
Kitchen Nightmares.
Tabatha's Salon Takeover premieres Thursday August 21st at 10 p.m. ET on Bravo.

Much like the marriage of
Top Chef and all things Glad,
Bravo's Shear Genius has inked a deal with Nexxus Salon Hair Care to be the sole integrated sponsor of the upcoming season. And we're talking full immersion here. The salon that houses the competition will be called the "Shear Genius Nexxus Salon." There will be a Nexxus challenge in the show. The stylists will use only Nexxus products. And the winner of the
Shear Genius will receive $100,000 furnished by Nexxus and an apprenticeship with the company.
Get ready to lather, rinse and compete. The
second season of SG will premiere on Wednesday June 25th at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Bravo.
Jaclyn Smith will host. Celebrity stylist Kim Vo and
Allure editor Kelly Atterton will helm the judges table. Rene Fris will be back again as the contestants' mentor.
Shear Genius is the Bravo's first original series shot in high definition.

On Friday I attended the All-American Summer Press Event held by NBC Universal. The event was held at the Langham Hotel (formerly the Ritz-Carlton) in Pasadena, CA. It included the casts and producers of the following shows:
American Gladiators,
Nashville Star, Shear Genius, and
Last Comic Standing. NBC also held panels for two new shows:
Celebrity Circus and
Baby Borrowers.
Find out what Wolf said and what's in store for next season on NBC and Bravo after the jump...

You know they have to been ticked off at Bravo about losing
Project Runway to Lifetime. Still,
Bravo execs stood up at a breakfast in New York to announce their new schedule, all happy and smiling. The good news is that they still have some good stuff coming up, starting with more Kathy Griffin, another season of goofy Jeff Lewis, the house flipper, and -- oh, yeah -- one more edition of
Project Runway. Should we call in the auld lang syne edition?
Here's the rundown of what's coming back for Bravo:--
Project Runway: The last Bravo season (unless something changes) will begin in July 2008, with the usual cast of judges.

A day hasn't gone by where we haven't received some sort of tip or email asking us, the TV Squad, how to get on [insert reality show here]. Unfortunately no, Simon Cowell does not work for us, and Donald Trump isn't my BFF, so we really can't help all that much.
The folks at RealityWanted.com often send us a list of new and existing reality shows that are looking for new, er, talent, and they've given us permission to make mention of them here. We'll try to make this a regular feature as often as we get a new list.
This time we have Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, Shear Genius, I Can Do That and other new shows.

Bravo has been praising the successes of its freshmen reality competitions Top Design and Shear Genius for awhile now. So it comes as no surprise that the pair have been renewed for second seasons. This Yahoo! article also confirmed Jaclyn Smith will return to host the second run of Shear Genius, in which hairstylists compete for $100,000. Not clear yet is if Todd Oldham or any of the judges would be returning on Top Design, in which interior designers, architects and artists vie for $100,000. Of course, it doesn't mean they won't re-up, just that no one is saying yet.

The folks over at Bravo have a pretty nice thing going with their family of reality shows. They've managed to carve out a little niche, and it seems to be working. The newest member of the family,
Shear Genius, wrapped up its initial run last night, awarding $100,000 to the stylist that was a cut above the rest.
It was an interesting season. I think the show falls just short of its big sister,
Project Runway, but it's still a solid premise, and well worth giving another go. Jacklyn Smith, as host of the show, holds her own when compared to Heidi Klum. And both of them are a step above Padma Lakshmi on
Top Chef. Unfortunately,
Shear Genius really loses some ground when you compare Rene Fris to Tim Gunn. Enough about that though, the winner is after the jump.

My second favorite angel has been named as the host of Bravo's upcoming reality show Shear Genius. Kevin
mentioned the show in an earlier TCA post, but upon hearing the idea I wasn't that interested. I'm a guy that wears a Crimson Tide ballcap for about 18 hours a day, so hair, and the styling thereof, isn't really in my wheelhouse.
The addition of Jaclyn Smith as host though, that's enough to get me to tune in at least once and give the show a try. She'll be joined on the show by celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger as the head judge.
According to NBC, the contestants will "go head-to-head in creative challenges that require more than just talent with a comb and scissors." If you have seen
Top Chef or
Project Runway, I think you have an idea about how this one is going to go. Although, it's one thing to watch Vincent make a model look ridiculous for 2 minutes in his "crap glued on poster board" getup, it is a whole other deal to watch someone get their head mutilated by a contestant's artistic vision. The potential for cringe inducing comedy is high.

Bravo announced a plateload of new shows and seasons coming down the pipeline this year. They include returning seasons of
Top Chef,
The Real Desperate Housewives, and the final season of
Queer Eye. New show lineups include
Shear Genius, a reality competition show involving hair-dos and hair-dont's,
Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, which is all about makeovers and fashion, and a new show that will follow
American Idol judge Paula Abdul around on a daily basis, showing us all what her life is like. Hopefully we'll find out what sort of wacky meds or liquid libations she has before each episode. Fingers crossed.
