America's Best Dance Crew is three weeks into its new season, and it's still kind of boring. It's gotten so bad, that this week as host Mario Lopez was declaring safe crews, I realized that I'm not recognizing most of them right away.
So You Think You Can Dance had the same problem this summer; nobody dynamic really jumping out for the longest time.
America doesn't seem to know who to vote for either
, because their "safe" crews each week look like they're being drawn out of a hat. Just this week, the bottom two crews by America's vote gave the best two performances of the night by a landslide.

(S05E18) While Mia Michaels was a little better during her last guest stint at the judge's table, it was Ellen DeGeneres that excited me the most. I'm a huge fan of DeGeneres, dating back to her stand-up work. And while I think she's hilarious and I love her comedic style, I'm not sure if her presence here made much sense.
GROUP
"Let It Rock," Kevin Rudolf f. Lil' Wayne (Contemporary, Travis Wall)
I'm not sure this offered each individual dancer the chance to shine that Travis indicated it would; either that or they were all shining in the same style. Nevertheless, it was a high energy performance. I actually found the lighting on the costumes a bit distracting from the performances, but as it's a group number, I'm not too worried about it.

Considering how often MTV re-airs all of its original programming, I don't think it really matters when a show first airs on the network, but it's still bold
moving Randy Jackson Presents: America's Best Dance Crew to Sundays at 9PM ET for its eight episode fourth season. Previous seasons have aired on Thursdays at 10PM ET. The show brought in big numbers in its Thursday slot, so methinks MTV is hoping to grow the brand. Maybe some cross-appreciation with
So You Think You Can Dance could do it.
Shane Sparks recently appeared on
SYTYCD with a couple of less-than-impressive choreographed numbers. Maybe Nigel would allow him to pimp the new season of
ABDC there. Or bring in JabbaWockeeZ or one of the other past teams to dance on a results show of
SYTYCD. How hot would that be? Speaking of, the new season of
ABDC is preluded by a special highlighting the top ten dance performances ever on the show August 2 at 9PM ET. There've been some pretty sick performances on the show, so this is a must-see!

(S05E07) Shane Sparks, you sly devil. Somehow he managed to choreograph two routines and allow his face to be shown. That's great because Shane has provided some of the best hip-hop choreography this show has seen. Unfortunately, this episode didn't show any of it.
Cat Deeley starts off the show on an odd note. I didn't know that wrapping my living room drapery over one shoulder is fashionable. The order of the show threw me off, because they put the best performances in the middle and the bad ones on the ends.

(S02E11 ... or is that 12?) The live auditions were considered a sort of special, so does it count as episode one? This finale featured the return of all the crews from throughout the season and the results of which of the final two crews would be crowned. I'll just come right off the top and say that I was pretty disappointed to see Fanny Pak taken down before the finale. Of all the crews this season, they were the ones who got me the most excited.
The problem is I'm not sure which of the top two finalists I would have eliminated to make room for them. I just don't think either of them was stronger overall than Fanny Pak. Even the judges didn't seem pleased going into the finale with the remaining two crews. And unfortunately, throughout last week's performance episode, it was one disappointment after another until the final two dances. I appreciate the differences in these crews, but I don't think it was as exciting a finale as we could have had.

Looks like next summer we are getting
another season of So You Think You Can Dance. The dance competition will continue to rule the summer with its fifth season next year.
This shouldn't come as a big surprise to anyone -- whether you watch the show or not. It's basically the
American Idol of the summertime, the off-season Lythgoe/Fuller powerhouse. The ratings are stellar. Both Wednesday and Thursday telecasts rank number one in their respective time periods in all key demographics. Furthermore, the show has been Emmy nominated, earning four nods this year for choreography by Wade Robson, Shane Sparks, and Mandy Moore.

I know fans of
So You Think You Can Dance have noticed that one of the best choreographers from show is absent this season. We know why
Shane Sparks isn't on the program this summer, but what about Wade Robson? Many fans of the show agree that he has put together some of fiercest couple routines and group performances that
So You Think You Can Dance has ever seen.
Unfortunately, I don't know where Wade Robson is. Believe me, if I find out if he's coming back to Fox's hit show, you TV Squad readers will be the first to know. I thought in the meantime we could enjoy some of his other work, including his performance on
Star Search as a little boy. It's adorable.

On Tuesday I headed over to the Warner Bros. studios in Burbank, CA for a taping of
America's Best Dance Crew. I sat back in the V.I.P. room while the taping was going on. The show, which tapes at Stage 23, has a gigantic set this season (probably due to the first season's enormous and unexpected success). The taping is so boring though. While I was watching, they spent about twenty minutes taping the first thirty seconds where Mario Lopez starts things off. Each time they tweaked something he said, he got a little more annoyed. The audience never seemed to get tired of doing their job, applauding like maniacs.
But before anything started I got to interview judge Shane Sparks. Find out more about what
Sparks had to say about his involvement with
America's Best Dance Crew, his absence on this season's
So You Think You Can Dance, Wade Robson, and the JabbaWockeeZ after the jump.

The Daily News has put together
an article comparing the judges from
American Idol and
So You Think You Can Dance which confirms what I've been feeling all along:
So You Think You Can Dance is the superior competition show.
Take a look at the comparisons after the jump.

(
S04E09) Mia cried. Mary kept relatively quiet (Thank God!). Nigel lectured. Cat wore a green dress. And we eliminated another two dancers last night on
So You Think You Can Dance. Off we go!
Opening Performance"Elevator" by Flo Rida featuring Timbaland (choreographer: Shane Sparks)
What a great hip-hop performance! And I'm so glad that Shane Sparks is lending his expertise to the show again. I was worried he'd be totally wrapped up in America's Best Dance Crew this summer. The girls part on the floor was great but a few of them messed up the arm movements. The best part of the piece was Comfort with the three guys. It was near perfect. My eyes never left Comfort. I wasn't impressed with her krumping on Wednesday but this opener proved to me why she's there.

(
S03E22) A quick look at the little weather widget on my desktop tells me that summer is coming to an end next week. If that seems soon to you, I'm guessing you don't live in the greater Seattle area. At any rate, it's fitting that our premature change of season coincides with the ending of the best of the summer reality shows.
As Cat said in her introduction, "This is it." We've been watching these kids for weeks now, and it all comes down to one last night, stuffed to the gills with dancing. The show did have its moments of stretching, but the interviews and the looks back at auditions really played well here. Judging everything, Nigel and Mary of course, and they were joined by Dan Karaty. My first snarky thought was that they brought Dan in to judge to keep him from choreographing a number. But that was mean of me, and I have to say, I thought he did a good job in his judge's seat tonight. After the jump, a rundown of all the performances.

(
S03E18) Holy smokes. Episode 18 already? Our summer, and the
SYTYCD competition, is flying by. As Cat pointed out in the intro, we're only two weeks away from crowning the season three champ. The everybody dances the same solo format from last week was out the window, which I think was for the best. You can have too much of a good thing. There was also a welcome absence of political commentary, as I think that really took away from what the show is about last week. That doesn't mean that there wasn't controversy though, but we'll get to that later. More about all of the performances, after the jump.

(
S03E16) Cat kicked off the show reminding us that the decision is now in the hands of the viewers. That will put an end to the weekly musings about the judges curious elimination decisions. However, I don't think there will be any shortage of controversy with the viewers in charge. If the week six performance show is any indication, you could make a case for anyone to stay, so somebody is going to be disappointed with tomorrow's results. That's getting the cart ahead of the course though, there is a whole performance show to deal with.
Viewer voting isn't the only change this week. There are new partnerships to take a look at, and along with those five partner dances all ten of the contestants danced the same Wade Robson choreographed solo. Witnessing all of this were, of course, Nigel and Mary. Mia Michaels was along for the ride as guest judge. It all made for a pretty impressive night of competition. We'll try and wrap it all up in a nice neat bow after the jump.

(
S03E15) It seems like the summer is just flying by. Here we are, already down to the top ten. The competition has been very tough up to this point. Still, considering the talent of the contestants left, and adding in the fact that all of the partnerships are out the window, it's only going to get tougher.
Jean-Marc Genereaux got the nod to choreograph the big opening number this week, to the tune of "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." It was my favorite of the opening numbers so far. Lots of energy, and the period costumes were great. It's pretty impressive that, after all of the work that goes in to the weekly routine, the group is still able to come together and deliver these big numbers each week. As fun as they are though, we do tune in for the results. All the details are after the jump.

(
S03E14)This week we will lose two more dancers and that will bring us to the top ten. It's not winning, but making the top ten is a bit of a feather in the cap, and it also means that you get to go on the tour. So there is a lot on the line for the dancers. In addition, beginning next week the teams will be paired up randomly each week.
Wade Robson is the guest judge this week, joining Nigel and Mary. Wade talked about what he was looking for in the dance. He thinks that given the audience for the show, the dancers have a responsibility to tell a human story. I didn't actually follow all of that, but he's Wade Robson. I give him a lot of leeway on things like that. Anyway, with the pressure as high as it has been so far this season, on with the dances after the jump.
