In honor of our
Buffy/Angel week of
Retro Squad, it's only fitting that I finally give some updates on what's going on with each series with respect to their continuation in comic-book form. I'll throw in a little 'Serenity: Better Days' for good measure.
Let me warn you right now that I'll be revealing quite a bit about each series below. So, if you haven't read them yet or want to wait to read the books for any plot points,
stop reading now. I'll be writing about the entire series of each, not just the most recent.
First up,
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Season Eight.

We've talked a lot here at TV Squad about movies made from TV shows. A while back, Anna listed her picks for the 10 best movies based on TV shows, and then Paul listed his picks for the 10 worst. (I also chimed in with my picks for 5 TV shows that are better than the original movie). Now Rotten Tomatoes picks the 50 best movies made from TV shows, and the results are...odd.
Now, some of the choices are predictable if not accurate, including Star Trek II, Wayne's World, South Park, Mission: Impossible, The Untouchables, and The Brady Bunch Movie. And fans of Firefly will be happy to see Serenity on the list (and in the top 10!).

It's been a while since my last review of a
Buffy season eight comic, and since then there's been other developments in the TV-on-comics front (we should have a category for that). Rather than dedicate separate posts to this news, I'll round everything up here, at least this time around.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - season eight - Issues #10 & #11These were stand-alone "episodes," unlike 'The Long Way Home' and 'No Future for You'. A few things are revealed here that help keep the Big Bad of this season in play. Willow has even more power than we could have realized in past seasons, and an unexpected person has a crush on Buffy. I really liked 'A Beautiful Sunset' (#11) more than any other issue, with a great moment where one of the main, masked antagonists is almost revealed. Classic Joss writing.
A new multi-part series kicks off March 5, written by veteran Drew Goddard.

What are you going to do? The Office, How I Met Your Mother, and even new shows like Pushing Daisies and Chuck are either out of fresh episodes or quickly running out. Well, you don't need to spend the "strike season" curled up in the corner of your bedroom crying through a pile of TV Guides, remembering the good old days when you didn't already know what was going to happen this week on House.
Television is alive and well, and even growing ... just somewhere else. Want to know what happened to Jack Bauer before Season One of 24? How about Buffy and the Scooby Gang after the series finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? More and more shows are expanding their horizons by telling prequels, sequels and even in-between-quels in comic books, or graphic novels.

This news is a big damn deal to die hard fans of
Firefly and
Serenity (we call 'em 'Browncoats'). Apparently there are some Browncoats at NASA and they have managed to get DVDs of Joss Whedon's television show and movie up to the International Space Station. Astronaut
Steven R. Swanson is the fan who just returned from the ISS after delivering the DVDs (oh yeah, and other important astronaut/survival supplies).
There's a fan page that blogs about it called
Breaking Atmo. The most recent posts has all sorts of photos of
Firefly and
Serenity DVDs floating in space. One of the
blog posts says that "Swanny" got the other astronauts addicted to
Firefly while they were all in quarantine for five hours before the shuttle Atlantis launched earlier this month.
I've also heard that there are a number of astronauts at NASA who are addicted to
Battlestar Galactica. Can you blame them?!?

Like many people, I was a little skeptical when I heard that someone was re-imagining
Battlestar Galactica way back when. It seemed like an idea that could blow up in so many ways. We know now that Ronald D. Moore and his team pulled it off in a big way, but the reason I tuned in that first time was because I heard that if you looked really closely, in a certain scene, you would see Serenity fly across the screen.
I'm off on a bit of a tangent there, but not completely. The two universes meet again in the world of pen-and-paper RPGs.
Margaret Weis Productions, the people behind the
Serenity RPG, are now at work on a
Battlestar Galactica game based on the same system. Plans call for a quickstart guide in early 2007 with the full game being released in the spring. The MWP site is under construction, but you can read the whole press release at
OgreCave.

Even if you're not a
Whedonite yourself, you've got to give it up for the fans of Joss Whedon. The
Buffy,
Angel and
Firefly fanatics have created a community that has held multiple nationwide fundraisers for Whedon's favorite charitable organization
Equality Now and single-handedly acted as the grassroots marketing engine behind Whedon's directorial film debut
Serenity. Let's just say, they're a nice bunch.
A group of those fans has now turned its attention to
honoring Whedon with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Their collective reasoning is sorta sweet. "It's a tangible way to show respect by giving him something else to add to his legacy and to show how much he means to us...It's not all about Joss...It's about family, not the one we are born into by blood, but the one that Joss created out of his work...We cannot give him the prestigious awards; most of us are not on any academy boards, nor people that have a choice of nominations." Sorta makes you tear up a bit, doesn't it? Pop culture making the connection. The people's star.

(S01E10) While there were several great episodes of
Firefly that never made it to air, at least we were treated with the season (well, series) finale, albeit not in its rightful order. With this episode the series goes out on a high note, making it a bittersweet ending that, when seeing it subsequent times, makes one long for the series to be back.

Are you one of the few that still haven't discovered Joss Whedon's
Firefly? Maybe you have, but you didn't get around to picking up that DVD set yet. Or maybe you just prefer your sci-fi western space-opera with commercials. Whatever the case, if you want to see a whole bucketload of
Firefly eps, Sci-Fi
has you covered. On September 18th you can catch 11 hours of
Firefly in a row. From "Serenity Pt.1" all the way to "War Stories" beginning at 8AM EST. Set your VCR's, PVR's, and DVR's, or start prepping your excuse to call in sick.

JoBlo, a website that respects
Fight Club as much as I do, has a great list of the Top 10 movies based on television shows. For the most part, I agree with it. Except there is one major oversight: What about The Muppets?
The Muppet Movie didn't make the list and, quite frankly, I'm baffled. I think it should totally replace
The Naked Gun, which weighs in at #4. What-ever. The rest of the list looks good, however. It includes everything from last year's
Serenity to
Wayne's World to
The Untouchables.
I'm going to list his Top 10 after the jump, but I highly recommend you
go on over and read it and then come back and tell me if you think they forgot something. If you say
Dukes of Hazzard or
Starsky & Hutch... so help me... I'll reach through your computer and slap you!

(Unaired) Everytime I see the title of this episode (and the name of the town, I believe), I can't help but think of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I can only imagine that those responsible for naming this episode meant it as a tribute to the Douglas Adams books. Then again, maybe someone's just a big Neil Young fan.
In this episode we get an even closer look at the non-relationship between Mal and Inara. It's interesting how Mal, who has always been looking down on Inara's profession, so easily gives in to Nandi. I think it shows most definitely that it's not Inara's profession that bothers him, it's that Inara's in that profession. Anyway, it makes sense to me.

(Unaired) I'm sure some diehard
Firefly fan will know the answer to this (if there is a known answer), but I wonder if Joss was at all influenced by
Blade Runner when he came up with the idea for this show. The future-Asian feel was present in the opening scenes of this episode, much as we see in
Blade Runner, complete with a multitude of TV screens of all shapes and sizes, most of which are displaying some kind of commercial.

(Unaired) This episode was depressing to watch. Why? Because it never made it to air. This, my friends, is a fine example of what
Firefly is all about. It's when you get a good mix of science fiction and good ol' Western-like heists and gunplay that this show shines. But I have a confession to make -- this was the first time I saw this episode.

There probably isn't a Browncoat in the 'verse who doesn't already know this, but Adam Baldwin, who played Jayne on
Firefly, is auctioning off autographed copies of all 14
Firefly shooting scripts. The auction is
on eBay and it closes in six hours (sorry!). Right now, bids for the two-hour pilot (
Serenity) are up to $2,075. It is signed by Baldwin, Morena Baccarin, Nathan Fillion, Ron Glass, Summer Glau, Sean Maher, Tim Minear, Jewel Staite, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk and Joss Whedon (oh, if only I had a trust fund!!). The money will benefit the
Marine Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation and the auction is being run by the
California Browncoats.
If that's a little too rich for your blood, there's a lot of other
Firefly stuff up for sale on eBay.

(S01E09) I said in one of my previous reviews that I thought it'd be neat to see how Mal and Zoe met and what it was like to be a Browncoat in the war. While we didn't see any of that in this episode, We did get a good feel for their relationship together.
For the first time, I believe, we see the return of a character from Mal's relatively recent past, the old boss man from '
The Train Job.' Almost Khan-like, isn't it?
