TV, movie stars lend voices to Quantum Quest - Comic-Con Report

William Shatner gives voice to The Core in the new animated movie, Quantum Quest.A Thursday panel at Comic-Con International announced a new animated project about space that packs a stellar voice cast.

TV stars like William Shatner, Brent Spiner and Mark Hamill will join movie big shots like Chris Pine, Samuel L. Jackson and James Earl Jones in Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey.

Producer -- Dr. Larry "Doc" Kloor (scientist science fiction writer and the only human in history to earn two doctorates simultaneously) -- led the panel with special guests Bob Picardo, Doug Jones and a call-in by Pine.

According to Kloor, Pine plays Dave -- "a photon who lives in Sun City, at the core of the Sun. He's forced from the Sun and drawn into an epic battle between The Core (Shatner -- right) and The Void -- the embodiment of nothingness (Hamill)."

Afro Samurai: Revenge

The future samurai watches his father walk toward his final fight.
(S01E01)
Afro Samurai is Samuel L. Jackson's latest venture. It's a captivating mini series that's something of an americanized cross between Tarantino violence and high quality anime. Aside from providing his voice for two characters, he's also co/executive producing it.

"Revenge" begins in the past with the death of the boys father at the hands of Justice, a cackling creepy character, over posession of the #1 headband. I had to watch the fight a couple of times, but I still don't know just how Justice defeated #1. (A weaponized eyeball maybe?)

DVD Review: Extras: The Complete First Season

Extras first season DVDAs I may have mentioned here once or twice, I was a huge fan of the British version of The Office. No matter what the US version accomplishes or how good it gets, I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the vision Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant had of the average dead-boring workplace and the relationships that are developed there.

So when I was sent a preview copy of the first season of the pair's follow-up effort, Extras (out Tuesday), I was intrigued but wary: after such a successful debut, the sophomore effort more often than not disappoints. Also, all the reviews of the show I had read during its BBC and HBO runs (I have neither channel) were of the mixed-to-positive variety. So... is it worth buying, renting, or neither? I'll let you know after the jump.

Celebrities sign up for animated series on Spike

samuel l jacksonSamuel L. Jackson, Ron Perlman, and Kelly Hu have signed on to voice characters in the upcoming animated series, Afro Samurai on Spike. Jackson is also executive producing the project, which is based on a graphic novel by Takashi Okazaki about a black Samurai's quest to find the man who killed his father. Jackson will voice the lead character, while Perlman will voice the villain he seeks. Perlman, by the way, is the guy who played the title character in Hellboy and the Beast in the television series, Beauty and the Beast. Hu plays Okiku, a friend from the samurai's past. She played the female version of Wolverine in X2: X-Men United. The RZA is creating original music for the series.

Spike has ordered five episodes of Afro Samurai. They begin airing January 4th.

The History Channel's tribute to black WWII soldiers

honor deferredOne of the many stories left out of our history books about World War Two is the heroics of the 761st Tank Battalion, a group of black soldiers that history forgot. But not the History Channel. This month, presumably in honor of Black History Month, the History Channel is airing Honor Deferred. Narrated by Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson, the documentary pairs historical photos and video archives with interviews of the black men who served in the 761st. The men spent 183 consecutive days in combat, fighting Nazi Germany and its allies. It comes highly recommended by reviewers as an important piece of American history.
