RyanMurphy-related stories

I didn't think we'd seen the last of
boozy old gleester April Rhodes, and now it's official.
Kristin Chenoweth is reprising her role on Glee for at least one more episode, to air in early 2010. Creator
Ryan Murphy didn't divulge any more info about her role, so there's no telling if she'll spend her time getting Kurt drunk again, or if she actually learned a lesson from her last visit and found happiness in
Branson.
What's interesting is that Chenoweth has made no secret about her
desire to return to Glee, perhaps in a permanent capacity, so could this second visit be paving the way for a place in the cast? Again, Murphy is keeping mum, but what if it is true? Where would they put April Rhodes? Do you really want her to be a member of glee club? Would she help Will coach? Will she form a love square between Will, Terri and Emma? After all, he did have a monster crush on her in high school.

There are plenty of ill-conceived female characters all over prime-time TV (just pick any show on the CW for starters) but is it fair to dump
Glee into that category? While
Glee undoubtedly has some of the most egregious, misshapen teen girls around, I don't think it's this fall's worst offender.
Sadie over at
Jezebel makes some very salient points in her
gender-critique of Glee, but she misses the mark when she calls the show "cheap and disingenuous." Yes, stock portrayals of female characters can reinforce harmful stereotypes, but I don't think that's what's happening on
Glee.
As an avid fan, I think you can appreciate the show without dismissing it because it doesn't portray women in a positive light. This is a Ryan Murphy show. And no one comes out looking good in a Ryan Murphy show.

Did you see Kristin Chenoweth on
Glee the other night? Fully recovered from her
migraine the night that she won the Emmy for Pushing Daisies, the prolific Kristin Chenoweth talked about the appearance on
Glee -- including an
interview with Nick the other day -- and she was enthusiastic about it.
She said it was a blast playing a character as wild as
April Rhodes. She liked it so much,
Kristin would like to make Glee a permanent thing. Or at least be asked back for future guest appearances.
She may get her wish. Kristin told TV Guide, "Ryan Murphy, the creator and genius behind
Glee, has indicated that he'd love for April to come back some time. However, they are all working hard to figure out stories all the time. It'd be great for it to make sense for her to come back."

When you write about the television business, one of the little perks is
receiving the press kit for a new or returning program. Occasionally, some little trinket will be included -- Kona got a whistle for
Sit Down, Shut Up, there was a tee-shirt with
My Boys -- but for the most part, the thing you remember about a press kit ultimately is the show.
When the press kit for
Glee arrived, it made me laugh. The package was like a long, CD box (remember those?), all in red and looking like a typical high school locker. It even had a combination lock, which gave me the willies as I recalled the apprehension I had that first day in school when I wasn't sure I'd remember the combination in time to make it to home room! There was also a small mirror on the left side -- which I guess qualifies as a trinket -- and it caught my smile in its reflection.

If you had to guess, what's the most coveted, prime TV real estate currently available? In February, it was the post-Super Bowl slot, but now -- what could it be. How about the hour after the
American Idol finale on May 19 on FOX. With that in mind, FOX has decided to give one of its most promising, albeit unusual, new products the hour.
Ryan Murphy's musical comedy series
Glee is getting the post American Idol finale hour. And yes, it is a musical comedy TV series. After American Idol crowns its new winner on May 19, all those millions of viewers, the ones who stay on the network, will see a special preview of the show about a struggling high school glee club.

On my recent
visit to the set of Burn Notice, I had the pleasure of meeting the cast, including the irrepressible
Bruce Campbell, the plucky Gabrielle Anwar, and the fascinating star of the show, Jeffrey Donovan. They were all wonderful and I was thrilled to participate in a round-table interview with them. However, when I had the chance to shake the hand of
Sharon Gless, the Emmy-winning actress who starred in
Cagney & Lacey, The Trials of Rosie O'Neill and played amazing characters on
Queer as Folk and Nip/Tuck, I have to confess -- I gushed. I couldn't help it. She's Sharon Gless!
I discovered that as brilliant as she is a performer, Sharon Gless is also a class act with the media. She talked about another
Cagney & Lacey, Tyne Daly, acting, playing villains,
Kim Cattrall and much more. Read on and you'll see -- as I did -- why you'd gush to if you were face-to-face with Sharon Gless.

Will Nip/Tuck have a season six? Why is James Gandolfini going back to HBO and will Larry David end Curb Your Enthusiasm?
These tidbits -- and a tons of swag -- came out at today's TCA press sessions at the Beverly Hilton hotel. I had to remind myself that today was a cable day because the roster of talent read like a major network.
Jason Priestly (Beverly Hills 90210) led the cast of Side Order of Life, a Lifetime series in which star Marisa Coughlan has second thoughts about marrying Priestly. But, hey, if Big dumped Natasha on Sex in the City then I suppose anything's possible.
