Like many people, I was
miffed that Journeyman wasn't picked up for another season. But maybe we'll get our fix of
Kevin McKidd at Seattle Grace next year.
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the Scottish actor, who blew (some of) us away as the time-traveling journalist Dan Vasser on
Journeyman, is in talks to join the cast of
Grey's Anatomy. The rumor is that McKidd would play a doctor who scrubs in at the hospital after a stint in Iraq.

Hello!
The Saint is rising again. The venerable character, who was created by writer Leslie Chareris in novels in the 1920's, will be back on television in a contemporary setting, and actor James Purefoy (
Rome) has been in talks to play Simon Templar, the suave, British "good guy" thief. Aside from Purefoy, the
Hollywood Reporter writes that
the production team includes first class talent:
Homicide's Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana (
Oz), writer Jorge Zamacona, Bill Macdonald, and the original TV
Saint himself, Roger Moore, and his son Geoffrey Moore.

(S01E02) Last night on
Cane Alex started his new position as the head of the Duque rum and sugar empire but things aren't business as usual: Alex continued to deal with brewing opposition from his "brother" Frank and had to clean up some loose ends from the murder of Quinones.
Some people might say that this show is just
Dallas remixed but I love me some classic rich family drama (this drama is spicier because it includes Jimmy Smits and an array of nice suits). Smits certainly makes a good front man for this cast which also includes Hector Elizondo and the incomparable Rita Moreno.

OK, so the networks have given their upfronts and they've sent out the screener DVDs. These are the pilot episodes of the new fall shows, in not-quite-completed form. Things could still change before they hit the networks this fall, but they give a good general sense of what the shows are about and what they're like.
Today Joel and I start with previews of some new NBC shows: Bionic Woman, Life, Chuck, and Journeyman. More networks and other shows coming soon!

(S02E10) When HBO failed to renew Carnivale for a third season a few years back I was absolutely outraged. Carnivale was like a lover to me. Sexy, intelligent, mysterious, and beautiful in a bright but dirty way - all attributes of a good mate in my book.
To this day, it remains the only show I ever coordinated a watch party for which is saying a lot because I like a lot of shows, and I still quote Brother Justin's "Be Still!" line when I want someone to shut their mouth. Needless to say, I was pretty much heartbroken when the show was cancelled but I didn't go down without a fight.

ABC's latest
Bachelor candidate is starting to sound a little slimy. Sure, Lorenzo Borghese is a member of Italy's royal family who grew up in the United States. But apparently he couldn't speak a lick of Italian so the producers signed him up for an intensive Italian course before the show started, according to
Radar online. And, even though
his bio says he was raised in Connecticut, Radar can only find addresses for his family in New Jersey, dating back to 1979. Plus, the Radar reporters say there's no way Rome is Lorenzo's "second home", as he claims in the promos. Members of the Borghese family in Rome say the prince has never come to their city. And, quite frankly, they're embarrassed that he's doing the show as a member of the family.

Okay, before I continue here I just want to mention that this is unsubstantiated information from an untested resource. Also, as far as we know, it is not part of the development deal James Gandolfini recently signed with HBO. And, finally, this is not an idea I came up with during a dream I had last night.
According to a poster at Ain't It Cool News, HBO has been working on a new series called The Centurion, which takes place during the peak of the Roman Empire. Now, you're saying, they already have a show like that called Rome. Well, the premise of this series is that aliens regularly visited the famous city to encourage its citizens to aspire to greater heights. According to the poster, The Centurion is scheduled for a fall 2007 release.
This seems awfully fishy to me. HBO is normally not a network that delves into production of science fiction series. This sounds like something that you would see on a channel like Showtime; they have a history in this genre with shows like Stargate:SG-1 and Jeremiah. Perhaps HBO is producing this show in an agreement with the Sci-Fi Channel, or another outlet. Let me know what you think?

HBO announced that the second season of
Rome will be the last. Apparently, Rome was originally planned as a mini-series but HBO was so blown away by the quality of the first episode that it picked up an entire season. HBO says logistics of shooting overseas and a very high price tag--first season topped out at $100 million--were reason enough to shut down the show.
Season two is currently filming at the Cinecitta Studios in Rome and it premieres January 7 on HBO.

HBO, for many years, was considered by many to be an oasis on the television landscape. A place where TV could still be intellligent, controversial, even thought-provoking. The thing is, HBO has always said that ratings were never that important, only quality programming. That's easy to say when your quality programming is already getting good ratings. Nowadays, people aren't so sure about HBO's offerings, but officials at the cable network claim they're approach isn't to find the next Sopranos, but to work on a kind of "paradigm shift" which will incorporate its pay-per-view channels and other assets. I guess we'll all just trust that HBO knows what the heck it's doing.
