New TV on DVD releases this week

Tom and Jerry dvdsHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

I can't think of another DVD week where there's so much that I don't want to buy. So few new releases, and nothing that really screams out "buy me." OK, maybe the Tom and Jerry set could be fun, but for some reason I was never into that series of cartoons. For my animal battle cartoons I'm more a Sylvester/Tweety and Road Runner/Wile E. Coyote fan.

  • Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern - Collection 3
  • Ghost Hunters - Fans Favorite Investigations: Special Edition
  • The Girls Next Door - Season 5
  • Monster Squad - Complete Series
  • Mr. Troop Mom
  • Reba - Season 6
  • Tom and Jerry - The Chuck Jones Collection

New TV on DVD releases this week

Stargate DVDHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

How can there be so many DVDs released in one day and there not be one that I want to buy? I never got into Stargate, I don't want to own Dallas on DVD, ditto Reba, and I refuse to buy Walker Texas Ranger because a.) it's not very good, and b.) it replaced a show that I really loved in the early 90s. I enjoyed Benny Hill, but I don't know if I enjoyed it enough to own it. So it looks like I'm going to save some money this week.

Yeah, right. Like I won't find something to buy that was released a while ago.

  • Alvin & The Chipmunks - The Chipettes
  • Ben 10 Alien Force - Season 1, Vol. 2
  • The Benny Hill Show - Best of the Early Years
  • Captain and the Kings - Miniseries
  • Dallas - Season 10
  • House of Payne - Vol. 3

Lifetime greenlights a new sitcom

Nicole SullivanWhen I interviewed Susanne Daniels, the President for Entertainment at the Lifetime Network, she was high on the success of Army Wives, and anxious to bring more comedy to the network.

"Viewers tell us that they love our comedies, our movies, Army Wives. I would argue that more people identify Reba and Will and Grace with our network now than the networks that launched them. And I was at the WB when Reba launched!" she said in TV Week. Well, now she's launching a new comedy, this time for Lifetime.

Lifetime has ordered 13 episodes of a new sitcom called Rita Rocks for this fall and cast Nicole Sullivan as Rita. The show will be part of a one-hour comedy block with Reba. "We've assembled a fantastic team in front of and behind the camera," said Ms. Daniels in a statement today.

Only 344 days left until Lifetime's next Christmas movie

Joanna GarciaYou might want to make a note of this because it's gonna be a long time before you see it. Lifetime wants us to know there's been some major casting done on their holiday-themed movie A Very Merry Daughter of the Bride. Luke Perry, JoAnna Garcia, Helen Shaver and Kenneth Welsh have all jumped on board the film, which is cleverly scheduled to air in December 2008. I wish they'd give me a date because I really need to schedule a hair appointment that night.

It looks like it's the story of a daughter (Garcia) who disapproves of her mother's (Shaver) upcoming nuptials and so enlists the groom's (Welsh) son (Perry) to try and persuade the pair to not wed. But the groom's son is Luke Perry, and this movie's on Lifetime so I think we all know what happens. And then Judith Light makes a cameo appearance as an empowered woman who survived an abusive past to become a stronger person (Okay, not really but you believed me for a minute there). I'm ashamed to admit it, but I'm weeping a bit right now just thinking about how touching it all is. I mean trying to break up your parents' wedding; what spells H-O-L-I-D-A-Y-S better than that!

Top TV Stories of 2006: The CW

The CW -- The new 5th network(Part 5 of 5) In the winter of 2006 CBS and Warner Brothers got together to create a new 5th network . . . The CW. You read right, I said 5th network. That's probably confusing you right now since you thought there were six major broadcast networks on the air last winter: ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, WB, UPN. Yes, that's true, but The CW was to do something unique to make it the 5th network. It was going to combine the programming of both the WB and UPN, eliminating those networks completely.

It sounded like a good idea at first. Take the best programming from both WB and UPN and put it on one network. No more jumping between the two networks to find the show you wanted to watch. No more confusion as to whether Veronica Mars was on WB or UPN. Plus, there was elimination of much of the mediocre crap that filled their weeknight schedules.

Like I said, it sounded like a good idea.

CMT Comedy Stage debuts in February

killer beazMelissa Peterman of Reba will be hosting the first four episodes of CMT's new stand up comedy showcase, CMT Comedy Stage. The series, which will tape in front of an audience at Nashville's Belcourt Theater, will debut in February of 2007. The series will feature comedians such as Etta May, Jon Reep, Vic Henley and Killer Beaz. Out of that list the only one I've heard of is Etta May, but that's why God created YouTube, so y'all can get up to speed on these comics.

When Jeff Foxworthy first brought Southern humor to the masses, it wasn't the kind of humor I was into. However, that scene has since exploded and I no longer think it's possible to crowbar every Southern / rural /red state comedian into the same category. It's like saying all New York comedians are the same, it just isn't true. Hey, it doesn't matter to me if you watch this new show or not, but thar ain't nuttin' wrong with expanding your comedy horizons a li'l.

Aquaman might be alive after all

Last week it was announced that The CW had passed on Aquaman, but now it looks like, officially, it's not dead yet. It is still in contention as a mid-season replacement. The superhero show is from the Smallville people, and many thought the show was a shoo-in to make the fall schedule.

And for those of you who were ticked that Reba had been canceled, it too might come back mid-season. So I guess all you Reba/Aquaman fans (can't wait for that crossover episode) will have just pray that one of the new shows does really badly.
