A couple of months ago, I interviewed
Lifetime president of entertainment Susanne Daniels for TV Week, asking her about
Project Runway jumping from Bravo to her network.
"We know for certain that Heidi (Klum) and Tim (Gunn) are returning. We would love to see the judges back, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia...but we're working on that," she said.
She went on to say that the show will look and feel very much like it did on Bravo; it will be airing in the same time slot, the same day of the week. And she secured Kors and Garcia, so the four important
Project Runway principals all will be in place.
Now comes word that in an effort to keep
Project Runway as much a hit on Lifetime as it's been on Bravo,
Lifetime is bringing in the veteran production team Bunim-Murray to take over as showrunners.

Unless that little ad I saw during
Top Chef was a total lie,
Project Runway's fifth season will be starting Wednesday, July 16 at 9:00 (new time). I definitely was not expecting the new round to start this early. It feels like the painful fourth season ended only three months ago because, umm, it did. It worries me when competition shows seem a little too eager to pick the next hottest thing. Let the old hottest thing bask in the limelight for a little while! I really hope
PR doesn't turn into a non-stop barrage of half-talent the way that
American Idol has, popping out new seasons like they're Danielle Steel novels and not allowing the talent pool to grow.

A day hasn't gone by where we haven't received some sort of tip or email asking us, the TV Squad, how to get on [insert reality show here]. Unfortunately no, Simon Cowell does not work for us, and Donald Trump isn't my BFF, so we really can't help all that much.
The folks at RealityWanted.com often send us a list of new and existing reality shows that are looking for new, er, talent, and they've given us permission to make mention of them here. We'll try to make this a regular feature as often as we get a new list.
This time we have Tim Gunn's Guide to Style, Big Brother and other new shows.

You know that movie, When Worlds Collide? Okay, maybe it won't be like that, but still.
Project Runway season 4 winner
Christian Siriano is doing a guest spot on ABC's Ugly Betty, according to
TV Guide. As anyone knows who watched this past season -- which was fabulous! -- Christian was one of the most funny and articulate designers in quite a while on the show. And his designs weren't bad either! He's already become famous for his use of the word "fierce." Kinda like Rachael Ray has made EVOO her own trademark term. You watch, someday soon Christian Siriano will name his label Fierce Fashions. (Do I get a piece of the action for that idea?)

(S04E12) I swear, if I hear Tim Gunn say that this group is the most talented season yet one more time, I will jump up and scream, "Lies! All lies!" and then flip over a table to kick-start my violent rampage. Sure, there are some super-talented individuals, as always, but I still don't believe that this is anywhere near the strongest group of designers yet.
Watching this Reunion didn't manage to convince me that this was the most exciting season either.

Occasionally, I will watch a particularly crazy episode of
The Daily Show or
The Colbert Report and sit through the credits feeling very angry with myself. "I had nothing to do today," I often think. "I could have jumped onto a bus and gone to a taping to get a piece of that awesomeness." Well, I am sad to report that this happened again, but this time in the most extreme way possible. I'm itching to talk about it and let my fangirly nerves express themselves, but I need to go through this chronologically or my brain will explode.

I don't want a lot for Festivus. There is just one thing I need --
Well, by "one thing", I really meant "six TV-related requests", but that's still not asking for much. Please, mysterious Festivus entity, I promise that I've been a good girl and that I have done my absolute best to properly preface all of my spoilerific posts. I also promise to make a much better effort in 2008 to be less creepy to all my favorite TV stars (sorry, Mr. Colbert). Super swear. All I want is...

(S04E01) As one of those annoying artsy designer-types, I have been super-excited about the new season of
Project Runway. The buzz among my social circles is palpable. Plus, I saw Tim Gunn at the Baltimore Book Festival and he assured the crowd that this cycle would feature the most talented bunch yet.
To quote Michael Kors, if I may, I found myself underwhelmed. Maybe it was because the challenge, to run to a tent full of lovely fabrics and make whatever the hell the designers wanted, wasn't as intense as previous first episode's. It's probably still too early to judge, so I'm going to wait for one or two more episodes before I decide how I feel about this cycle's designers.

Interesting piece in New York mag about what happens to reality show stars after they appear on TV. Top Chef winner Ilan Hall split with his girlfriend. Project Runway finalist Wendy Pepper changed her look and left her husband. And Project Runway winner Jay McCarroll is homeless.
For some reason, McCarroll blames this on fame and the show.
McCarroll had a hard time after winning the competition. He found out that The Weinstein Company owned 10% of whatever he created if he took the $100,000 prize. He didn't take the money, and now he's broke and doesn't really do anything for the network anymore, which hurts his images and brand (the clause is no longer in the show's contract). McCarroll doesn't even have a permanent home: "I haven't been living anywhere for two years...I sleep at other people's houses. I sleep here [a studio] if I'm drunk."

The folks over at Bravo have a pretty nice thing going with their family of reality shows. They've managed to carve out a little niche, and it seems to be working. The newest member of the family,
Shear Genius, wrapped up its initial run last night, awarding $100,000 to the stylist that was a cut above the rest.
It was an interesting season. I think the show falls just short of its big sister,
Project Runway, but it's still a solid premise, and well worth giving another go. Jacklyn Smith, as host of the show, holds her own when compared to Heidi Klum. And both of them are a step above Padma Lakshmi on
Top Chef. Unfortunately,
Shear Genius really loses some ground when you compare Rene Fris to Tim Gunn. Enough about that though, the winner is after the jump.

My second favorite angel has been named as the host of Bravo's upcoming reality show Shear Genius. Kevin
mentioned the show in an earlier TCA post, but upon hearing the idea I wasn't that interested. I'm a guy that wears a Crimson Tide ballcap for about 18 hours a day, so hair, and the styling thereof, isn't really in my wheelhouse.
The addition of Jaclyn Smith as host though, that's enough to get me to tune in at least once and give the show a try. She'll be joined on the show by celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger as the head judge.
According to NBC, the contestants will "go head-to-head in creative challenges that require more than just talent with a comb and scissors." If you have seen
Top Chef or
Project Runway, I think you have an idea about how this one is going to go. Although, it's one thing to watch Vincent make a model look ridiculous for 2 minutes in his "crap glued on poster board" getup, it is a whole other deal to watch someone get their head mutilated by a contestant's artistic vision. The potential for cringe inducing comedy is high.

With the third season of
Project Runway just looming over the horizon (it premieres tomorrow at 10 PM EST!), the web is shaking with
Runway buzz all over again. The
Chicago Tribune's "The Watcher" has a
great interview with Tim Gunn, full of insider goodies. I swear, this guy knows exactly what he's talking about! And I'm not just saying that because he shares just about all of my opinions -- Okay, maybe I am.
Here are some points that I found extremely interesting:
- The winner was originally going to be Daniel Vosovic, but Nina Garcia turned the whole thing around after she went into a huge speech about how wonderful Chloe Dao was. Snarl, snarl. We members of Team Vosovic are furious.
- Daniel's turned into a bit of a diva? Wow.
- Tim thinks that Santino Rice's impression of him was spot-on. "There would be times when I would be watching Season 2 shows and I would hear my voice offscreen and I would think, is that me or Santino?"
- Tim liked Kara Janx's "decoy" collection more than those of the actual three finalists.
I really hope Season Three's contestants listen to Tim. Take that man's word as gospel if you know what's good for you!

On the cover: Heidi Klum and another season of Project Runway.
- Matt Roush calls Brotherhood "one of the surprises of the summer and Stephen King's Nightmares and Dreamscapes "uneven" but "effective."
- Stanley Tucci reunites with Tony Shalhoub on Monk.
- Did you know Richard Thomas has a new show on The Hallmark Channel?
- All hell has broken loose on the set of Rescue Me.
- Strangers with Candy hits the big screen.
- In the print edition: a complete A to Z guide to The Office; a Q & A with Entourage's Jeremy Piven; a list of TV Guide's "Guilty Pleasures" (including Footballer's Wives and Supernanny); and a look behind the scenes of A&E's reality show Intervention.
