New TV on DVD releases this week

Schoolhouse RockHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

I think I mentioned a week or two ago that it was good that I didn't have to spend any money on DVDs. Well, it looks like we're getting into a time when they're releasing something every single week that I want. This week it's Game Show Moments Gone Bananas, which looks like a lot of fun.

The first season of This American Life is finally out in general release after the Borders-only version from last year.

  • Alvin & The Chipmunks - Alvin's Thanksgiving Celebration and Holiday Gift Set
  • Ax Men - Season 1
  • Boston Legal - Season 4
  • Brothers & Sisters - Season 2
  • CSI: NY - Season 4

Nielsen ratings for the week ending June 1

Lost

Here are the weekly TV ratings, by number of viewers.

Um, OK, I had to do a double take (or maybe a triple) when I saw these ratings for Lost. Number 1 for the week?? I knew it would do better since it was the season finale, but the top spot, up 18 spots from last week? That's pretty cool.

The new edition of Password took the number 3 spot. Meanwhile, the number 18 show really kinda baffles me.

1. Lost (ABC)
2. Two and a Half Men (CBS)
3. Million Dollar Password (CBS)

Bob Barker is enjoying his retirement, thinks Carey is doing a good job

Bob BarkerIf anyone thought Bob Barker was going to miss being on stage at The Price is Right, then they'd be wrong. At least if you listen to Bob; he not only thinks he left "at just the right time," but is keeping himself extremely busy.

Barker spoke to the Long Beach, CA Press-Telegram recently, and he explained that "I enjoyed the show right up to the last minute of the last show. But, I don't miss it so much that I want to go back and do it again. I think I'm going to be very happy in retirement." He's currently working with various animal-rights organizations and is writing an autobiography, which he expects to be out late this year (ah, the publishing world moves quickly when they have to, know what I mean?).

The Price is (still) Right for primetime

Drew Carey on The Price is RightWhile CBS pulled Bob Barker up from daytime into the prime time spotlight a few times the past few years, they've yet to do so since Drew Carey took over as host of The Price is Right this season. But that's all about to change. For six weeks, starting February 22, CBS is shifting Ghost Whisperer back an hour so they can squeeze in all new episodes of The Price is Right at 8pm/7pm Central. Possibly to avoid double-Drew confusion, The Power of 10, also hosted by Carey, has been pulled from the schedule effective immediately, though it will likely return in the summer.

We've talked a lot here at TV Squad about how Drew is doing on TPiR this year and, while the jury may still be out, I think he's settled into a nice groove. No, he's not Bob Barker but do we really want someone who would go up there and act just like Bob did? They kept all the crazy games that make the show a classic, so I say let Drew be himself, and we'll get used to it. And if you haven't given him a try, here's a chance to curl up at home on a Friday night and see for yourself.

Will Drew Carey swear on The Price is Right?

Drew CareyThat headline isn't my opinion, it's something another TV critic is worried about.

Derrik Lang at SanLuisObispo.com points out that the very first word that Drew Carey uttered while taping the very first episode of his new CBS game show Power of Ten was "F**K. And then later in the show he made an a joke about a certain part of his anatomy (he later apologized for what he said, since there were kids in the audience). Lang now wonders if Carey could be the wrong choice for The Price is Right, since he works blue and seems more like a late-night host than a game show host and doesn't really get the TPiR fan base.

Coming Soon: a Price Is Right video game

The Price is RightThis seems like a no-brainer, and I wonder why they haven't done it before. A video game based on The Price Is Right will be in stores in time for Christmas.

Now, that will be long after the CBS show picks a new host to replace Bob Barker (the latest rumor: Drew Carey could get the gig, if he audtions and his new game show Power of 10 does well in the ratings), so there's no word on there will be any host depicted in the game. But all the classic games will be there: Contestant's Row, Plinko, the Showcase Showdown, and there will be real products in the game just like on the TV show.

I just hope they also have annoying, screaming audience members who can confuse the contestants, and women who run down the aisle and their boobs fall out of their dresses.

Price Is Right host search down to two?

PlinkoIt looks like the long search for the new host of The Price Is Right is down to two: Sarah Silverman and David Hasselhoff.

Just kidding! The New York Post is reporting that producers have narrowed it down to two contestants: Mark Steines and Todd Newton. Steines is a host on Entertainment Tonight (he'll keep the job if he gets the PIR gig), and Newton has hosted several game shows, including a PIR show in Las Vegas. The pay for the job is reportedly near $3 million a year. Nice.

Hmmm...I'm not sure about this. But I guess they're both competent hosts. It looks like producers are going for the safer choices (male, slightly older, experienced) than going with someone like Mario Lopez or Ian Ziering.

ESPN's Dan Patrick did not audition for The Price Is Right

Dan PatrickThis is odd. We've been covering this whole "who is going to replace Bob Barker" story for several months now, and this is the first time I've heard Dan Patrick's name come up.

But the ESPN Radio host told listeners yesterday that although he didn't audition to be the new host of The Price Is Right, producers of the CBS game show did indeed call him and ask if he wanted to audition. He said, um, no. (OK, I added the "um" part, but you can probably imagine he was thinking it that way.)

TV Squad Daily with Brigitte - VIDEO

Hey, Brigitte here with TV Squad Daily. I'll be covering the TV stories I find interesting each day, Monday through Friday, in this video blog.

Today on TV Squad Daily: Speculating about subjects we should be sick of by now!
The video's embedded below, or you can subscribe to this podcast via our feed. Plus, you can also the file directly.

Rosie out of the running for Price Is Right gig

RosieRosie O'Donnell has answered the prayers of many longtime Price Is Right fans: she has taken herself out of the running for the hosting job.

Of course, no one officially offered her the job, but she did meet with the show's producers for lunch last week. She would love to host the show, but as she says on her latest video blog, she doesn't want to uproot her family and move out to L.A., where the show is taped. She knows that a lot of people would, but she doesn't need the money and would rather take on projects that would keep her in New York.

So now we're down to only 47 other people who could host.
