This week marks the
40th anniversary of Sesame Street, the greatest and most celebrated kids' show in the history of the known universe.
Its cast of colorful character and innovative use of the medium have made it more than just entertainment for the young ones. It's a children's show that has educated the growing minds of children all over the world. It's a show that has shaped a generation into curious and innovative people. It's a show that could kick the ass of any other children's show on the planet if the two were in some sort of a weird battle to the death, provided that no weapons were involved and
Justice League doesn't count as a kids' show.
To celebrate this momentous day in television history, I'm compiling the most interesting moments, memories and characters from the show's 40 years into four special lists for their anniversary week (Why four? Because 40 would break the last ounce of my spirit), starting now with the show's best short cartoons.

Are Kermit, Fozzie and Miss Piggy poised for a comeback?
Jason wrote about it in June, and now there's more news if you believe this item from the UK Telegraph. Citing an unnamed source, the newspaper reported that
How I Met Your Mother's star
Jason Segel has written a script that brings Jim Henson's Muppets to the big screen, setting up a return to television. It sounds like a great idea, but without confirmed sources, I'd take the whole thing with a grain of salt.
Disney owns the rights to the Muppets and they would produce the picture. Segel's story picks up with the Muppets reuniting long after their TV show has ended. They agree to put on one big variety show to save the studio. Should this come off as planned and the film is a hit, the Muppets would then come back to series TV.

I'm a huge admirer of Peanuts, both the comic strip and the television specials, but I also love to see them satirized. Mad Magazine always had funny parodies of the Peanuts gang, usually having them behave more "adult" than they did at the hand of Charles Schulz. The Simpsons also poked fun at Charlie Brown and his friends on more than one occasion. Matt Groening is actually a Peanuts fan, too, which always seemed to make those moments even funnier.
If you're wondering what Peanuts would be like if the gang had weapons and an insatiable urge to maim and kill one another, I invite you to check out "Bring Me the Head of Charlie Brown." This is an old student film from Cal Arts, and I noticed that the name "Jeff Pidgeon" appears in the credits, which is also the name of someone who works at Pixar. I don't think it's a coincidence, but I sent Jeff an e-mail for verification and I'll update this post when I get confirmation, though I'm ninety-nine percent sure it is him. Also, somebody contacted Boing Boing, where I found this video, to inform them that the names of two Simpsons directors, Jim Reardon and Rich Moore, also appear in the credits.
Update: I received a message from Jeff Pidgeon, confirming his involvement with the project: "It is! Jim and I went to school together. I did the wah-wah voice of the Great Pumpkin."
