Goodbye Painkiller Jane

Painkiller JaneWell, that didn't last long: the Sci-Fi Channel has canceled Painkiller Jane.

The show about a DEA agent with special powers who tracks down others with special powers will finish its first and only season on September 21 (it's still strange to me that a show's season can end in September). That means that the show will have completed 22 episodes total. I predict that fans will be able to buy the show in a "Complete Series" DVD set late this year or early next year.

Painkiller Jane: Pilot (series premiere)

Painkiller Jane(S01E01) So, you watched the premiere episode of Painkiller Jane, didn't you? Curiosity struck you even after reading my less-than-glowing review of the show, didn't it? Well, good for you! Just because I wasn't enamored with the program doesn't mean my opinion is gospel. Everyone has free will in this society and should be able to decide whether a show is good or not.

So, did you dislike Painkiller Jane as much as I did? No? Well, you must be from another planet to like something like that! How dare you not think what I think! Oh, wait, that rant voids what I said in the first paragraph. Um, never mind.

Seriously, I didn't like the show just because the acting was bad and the writing the was poor (even though the writing was poor and the acting was bad). What turned me off to this show as soon as the first scene showed up on my television screen was that this type of show has been done over, and over, and over. Let's see if this sounds familiar to you: tough-as-nails law enforcement agent obtains remarkable powers and laments over the freak that she is rather than using those powers to fight evil. Let's count on our fingers how many times that's been done. You may need your toes, too, because this has been done a lot.

Painkiller Jane -- an early look

Painkiller Jane

What can I say about The Sci-Fi Channel's new show Painkiller Jane? Well, it certainly isn't well-written, well-acted, attention-getting, on par with Battlestar Galactica, or a fine replacement for Stargate SG-1. None of those phrases would describe this show. However, these would: bad acting, bad writing, extremely boring (both my wife an I fell asleep) and not a very good addition to the Sci-Fi Friday schedule. Now, I could be jaded here since the preview DVD I was sent showed rough cuts of the show. Nah, who am I kidding? The show is just bad!

What to Watch April 9 - 15

Thank You're Here on NBC and Drive on FoxHere are AOL Television's top picks for every day of the week. Get more TV recommendations here.

Thank God You're Here (Mon., 9PM ET, NBC) series premiere
Confession: I miss Whose Line Is It Anyway? What can I say, I like improv. That's why I'm excited for the premiere of this new improv show, hosted by David Alan Grier. Four celebs don costumes and play out scenes they know nothing about. In the first episode, Wayne Knight is a medical quack, Bryan Cranston a randy rock star, Joel McHale a clueless archaelogist and Jennifer Coolidge a ditzy pageant queen. Then, judge Dave Foley crowns one the best performer of the night.

Dog the Bounty Hunter (Tue., 9PM ET, A&E) 4th season premiere
Much happened to Duane "Dog" Chapman in 2006. Last May, he married business partner Beth a day after daughter Barbara died in a car crash. In September, he was arrested for bounty hunting in Mexico, where it is illegal. His request not to be extradited was denied, so he too will have his day in court. Despite all of this, Dog is back and better than ever. In the premiere, he personally takes on the case of a female fugitive after learning she shares the same birthdate as his late daughter.

Supernatural: Heart

Jared Padalecki, Emmanuell Vaugier, Jensen Ackles
(S02E17)
I was looking forward to this episode for two reasons, only one of which panned out. First, like Dean said, "Werewolves are badass." From American Werewolf in London right up to the recent Dresden Files episode "Hair of the Dog," I like stories involving werewolves. "Heart" can now take a well deserved spot in that long line of lycanthropic entertainment.

Stargate, Atlantis, Painkiller Jane coming in April

stargate atlantisWe've already mentioned that Battlestar is moving to Sundays on January 21st. It will be joined by the highly anticipated new series The Dresden Files. Now comes word that Sci Fi Friday's will return in April with the final ten episodes of Stargate, the continuation of the current season of Atlantis, and the new show Painkiller Jane. The press release also mentions new episodes of Ghost Hunters, the new season of Who Wants To Be A Superhero?, and 24 'pulse-pounding' original movies.

It's good to have a date for the Stargate return, but i am among those that just doesn't get what Sci Fi is doing with their scheduling. TV Squad reader Mack pointed out that the new Atlantis episodes are already airing in other markets, and a quick check of some torrent sites reveals that they are out there to be had. I didn't like the long break in the season when they did it with Farscape, and I don't like it now. With the serial nature of these shows, big breaks just don't work. 24 got it right.
