Expect the networks to renew more shows than usual

Old ChristineThe reverberations caused by the writers' strike continue to affect how the networks are doing business. Case in point: according to The Hollywood Reporter's James Hibberd, the networks may be more generous with renewals than they have in the past, due to the fact that even hit shows have been returning to diminished ratings. My guess is that, after a three-month break, most people realized they didn't give two craps about things like Meredith and McDreamy's latest breakup. But it may just be that the weather's nice outside.

Anyway, Hibberd goes on to mention the current status of some of the most prominent "bubble" shows. The good news: Reaper, Old Christine, and HIMYM and Moonlight have shifted over towards the "likely to certain" end of the spectrum, and Boston Legal will likely survive for another year. The bad news: Shark, Men In Trees (which is already gone, according to reports), Cashmere Mafia, and October Road are likely gone. And there's still no real feel for what's going to happen with Eli Stone or Women's Murder Club.

CBS rules Monday night

Two and a Half MenSo last night was the first really big Monday night of the new year, with the return of Heroes and Studio 60. And how did those shows fare?

Typical numbers for Studio 60 at 10pm, with around 7.4 million viewers. It was crushed by CSI: Miami, which got 18.7 million viewers. But the big news of the night (well big-ish, I guess) is that Two and a Half Men beat Heroes fairly easily. The Charlie Sheen show got 16.1 viewers, with Heroes getting 14.8 (24 was close, with 14.4). And yes, for you 18 to 49 demographic fans, Heroes won in that race.

That number for CSI: Miami is what I keep thinking about though. My God, almost 19 million for that show? I'm not just saying this because I'm a fan of Studio 60, I'd still say it if it was on Tuesdays at 8 or Saturdays at 9. It just depresses me that this show (and all the CSIs, actually) do that well in the ratings. It must make the network execs scream "hey, we should do more of those shows!"

There's no such thing as a curse! TV Guide in 60 seconds

  • Julia Louis-DreyfusOn the cover: Julia Louis-Dreyfus might finally have broken the "Seinfeld curse," and what I mean by that is there's no such thing as a stupid Seinfeld curse! The other shows weren't very good, that's all. What's a "curse" about that?
  • A rundown on all the May Sweeps action, including the series finales of Alias, Will and Grace, and West Wing, the (possible?) series finale of 7th Heaven, cliffhangers, guest stars, and all that stuff.

  • Matt Roush wonders if Commander-In-Chief can be saved, and really loves the new Jesse Stone movie with Tom Selleck.

Old Christine: One Toe Over the Line, Sweet Jesus

old christine; clark greggI am so tired of the fat jokes that Christine constantly makes about her body. She's fit. She owns a gym. She's tiny. Shut up, already. The show is funny enough with out that whole woman's-poor-body-image-thing.

Finally, we get to see a lot more of Christine's ex-husband, Richard. It turns out he's jealous of Christine's new boyfriend. Hypocritical? Oh yes, considering he is dating a 28-year old woman, also named Christine. And he's been flaunting young Christine in front of old Christine for the last few episodes.
