Numbers-related stories

Michael Ausiello is reporting that
CBS has reduced the number of episodes of Numb3rs for this season from 22 to only 16. What does this mean for the show? Well, it means that sometimes numbers aren't good even on
Numb3rs. It also means that this pretty much guarantees that this will be the last season for the show. Ausiello thinks that CBS will put
Flashpoint in the time slot when the episodes run out.
So, are all of you people who tried to save
Southland going to mount a similar campaign for this show? I didn't think so.

A lot of times, the news about ratings isn't good. Or not good enough, so shows that you care about have to hope for the kindness of TV executives to give that show more time to improve or find a new time slot or something ... just to survive. That's why it's such a pleasure that
Burn Notice did great in the ratings for the summer season finale last Thursday. According to the numbers, 7.6 million total viewers were glued to the set, the most eyeballs for any scripted TV shows that night.

This is either a sign that the overpaid and overindulged of the world are finally getting some karmic retribution, or the global economy is one more flush away from total chaos.
I know it's the second one, but we all need a little hope.
Entertainment Weekly has learned that CBS told their big stars to not even bother asking for another raise this year. The salary freezes only affect shows produced by the network, such as
Numb3rs,
NCIS and all of the
CSIs.

As Jason wrote the other day,
this has been a strange TV season thus far, with only two shows having been given the pink slip. That said, I think CBS's
The Ex List is not long for this world. There are a couple of really good reasons I say this, and just so you know, I'm not wishing for its demise. I can just read the handwriting on the wall.
The Nielsen ratings from last Friday show that the shows around
The Ex List --
Ghost Whisperer and
Numb3rs --
posted their highest ratings of the season to date. Nearly 10 million viewers watched the Jennifer Love Hewitt show, while another 9 million were glued to the Rob Morrow brotherly procedural at 10 p.m. In between, however,
The Ex List drooped to a season low 5.6 million.

Fans of the Tiffany network can do the happy dance.
CBS has renewed 11 scripted shows for the 2008-2009 TV season. The lucky 11 are:
CSI; CSI: Miami; CSI: New York; NCIS; Criminal Minds; Cold Case; Without a Trace; Ghost Whisperer; Numb3rs; Two and a Half Men; and
The Big Bang Theory.
There are not a lot of surprises in this bunch, although it's great news that
The Big Bang Theory, CBS's rookie Monday-night sitcom from Chuck Lorre's stable, made the cut. Still in limbo, however, are three other Monday-night comedies from the network:
How I Met Your Mother, Rules of Engagement, and
The New Adventures of Old Christine. The story speculates that
Mother will get the greenlight for a fourth season soon, but
Rules and
Christine seem to be in competition for the 9:30-10:00 half-hour slot.

I mentioned the other day that
Harold Perrineau had joined the CBS pilot
Demons. They've now cast the main character, Gus, and the winner is Ron Eldard. If you were paying attention, you might have seen him in the short-lived
Men Behaving Badly or
Blind Justice. Otherwise, think of him as the paramedic with issues that was dating Carol early in the
ER run. It's not the best piece of casting I've ever seen. Eldard has never proven that he can be the dramatic lead for a show, but stranger things have happened.
Meanwhile, over at CBS, Hugh Jackman (
Wolverine!) is producing something called
Viva Laughlin. Lloyd Owen (
Miss Potter) will star as a family man trying to open a casino in Laughlin, NV. Word is that Jackman will appear in the pilot and may have a recurring role on the series. Given just that bit of knowledge, I'm intrigued by the possibilities.

The numbers are in and Super Bowl XLI was huge. Coming in at 93.1 million viewers, it was the third most watched program in history, and the second most watched Super Bowl. Having the lead-in to end all lead-ins also helped
Criminal Minds put up the best numbers ever for the series. The special episode following the game averaged 26.2 million viewers.
Is that a disappointment? Last year, the post Super Bowl episode of
Grey's Anatomy drew a considerably larger 38.1 million viewers. We can chalk part of that difference up to the fact that
Grey's was more of a hit show going in, but I think more of it has to do with the subject matter.
Criminal Minds is never a touchy-feely, happy bunnies on clouds kind of show, but the post Super Bowl episode was dark even by their standards. Come on, Dawson chaining up a woman and setting the dogs loose on her? That's asking a lot from the family friendly Super Bowl audience.

If you're a fan of comedian Todd Barry, you should check out
this clip from Sesame Street, which features the deadpan comedian playing the number 7 and being given the third degree by some detectives because apparently, "seven eight (ate) nine." Yeah, it's an old joke, but this is
Sesame Street, isn't it? The clip is over a year old, but since I don't watch
Sesame Street on a regular basis I didn't catch it until now. Barry has also appeared on
Comedy Central Presents,
Tom Goes to the Mayor and
Freak Show. His role on
TGTTM as Joy's ex-husband who paints pictures using cow diarrhea resulted in one of the funniest episodes of the season. If you want to see something a little more grown up than this Sesame Street clip, you should check out "
Borrowing Saffron" a short film directed by and starring Barry and comedian Jon Benjamin.

The designers who brought us the
Colbert Has Stones t-shirt after Stephen Colbert's
marvelous performance at the White House Correpondents Assoc. dinner, also have a couple of shirts for
Lost fanatics. They're simple.
One of them just has the numbers: 4 8 15 16 23 42. With #23 circled. Or, you can show your allegiance with the evil overlord Hanso Foundation with
this t-shirt.
The company that designs the t-shirts is called Mule, and it's actually a web design company. They just happen to be really cool, too (Hey! They're also celebrating
Festivus!) They also made a
t-shirt and bumper sticker that says: George Bush Doesn't Care About Black People. It's quoting Kanye West, of course, from when he
hijacked the Katrina telethon on NBC.
