There's something really great about being able to buy an entire season of a TV show, or the entire run, on DVD. It can be addictive, too. But isn't it interesting that even though there are scads of great -- and some not-so-great -- series committed to DVD and readily available online or at the local superstore, there are a ton more that aren't? And what about great TV specials? When I read this
list, it got me thinking about which TV programs I would buy in a heartbeat. My list is very subjective -- maybe even eclectic -- but here's my ten TV shows that need to be on DVD.
The Bob Newhart ShowRecently, when the
American Masters did a special about Bob Newhart, they showed footage from
The Bob Newhart Show. No, not the one with Suzanne Pleshette as Emily. They had clips from the 1961-62
Bob Newhart Show on NBC. It was a variety hour, showcasing many of his now classic routines. It looked really funny, filled with his inspired sketches and bits. And it was critically acclaimed, too, winning Emmy and Peabody awards. Naturally, NBC canceled it after just one season. I'd love to think that there's enough footage from those shows to create a DVD.

It'll be one more time around for a
Wonder Years alumna and a
Felicity fave.
Fred Savage and Amy Smart have both been cast in CBS pilots. For Fred, who for me may have peaked as an actor as Kevin Arnold (although I did love him in
Austin Powers in Goldmember playing Number Three -- the guy with the mole on his face), the new project on tap is
Single White Millionaire. The sitcom is from the pen of writer Ricky Blitt, one of the
Family Guy scribes, so that's a plus. The plot is described as the story of an unassuming, thirtysomething millionaire ready to settle down -- and obviously looking for the right lady to share his life (although I guess he could be looking for a significant other of either gender -- the project line leaves it open).

Medium has become the Yes, Dear of "psychic who sees ghost genre and helps people," a show that not too many seem to talk about but gets pretty good ratings and gets renewed every year. See also: JAG.
NBC has given the Patricia Arquette show a fourth season, a week before the official fall 2007 lineup is announced at the network's upfront presentation. NBC President Kevin Reilly praised the show as only a network executive can (and while you read the praise, replace the title Medium with any show that NBC has canceled in the past 6 months).

The A.V. Club has
a list up on their site featuring 15 "lamentably lost" TV shows that only made it one season or less. As with anything where you start listing things, there are going to be omissions. And probably more glaring, there will be inclusions that make you scratch your head and say, 'Wha-huh?" Overall, I like their list. It has the usual suspects that I would have expected with
Firefly, Freaks and Geeks, and
Now and Again. They also included a couple that I don't think get enough press with
That's My Bush and
Cupid. Really, the more press that
Cupid can get the better, because it really deserves a DVD release.
The wha-huh inclusion for me though,
Cop Rock. It was an original concept, sure, but "lamentably" implies that you feel some kind of sorrow that it's gone. I think 11 episodes was more than anyone needed to get full and complete closure with
Cop Rock. As far as omissions, the shows that come to mind right away for me are
Going To California,
Keen Eddie,
Maximum Bob,
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., and
Wonderfalls. Going To California remains my number one most wanted DVD set, and
Maximum Bob is in the top five. I'm curious to hear what other people view as the ones that got away.
