Al Roker, NBCU and the Weather Channel

RokerSo, you probably heard that the NBC Universal empire will be expanding by one, once it has added The Weather Channel to its media outlets. On MSNBC this morning, the subs on Morning Joe were crowing about CEO Jeff Zucker, sucking up royally, and even hyping GE stock.

It was all really uncomfortable, obvious and out of place when you are tuning in for news, politics, some pop culture and get NBCU corporate cheerleaders in full pom-pom mode.

Okay, enough ranting; there is some news to report. If the deal goes through -- and it will -- Today weatherman Al Roker may be relocating or he'll be repurposed, becoming the face of The Weather Channel.

A new and old episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent walk into a bar...

New episodes of CI on USA and old episodes of CI on Bravo each Sunday. Who's watching the store? So, I'm watching a new episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent on USA Network this past Sunday and, like all upstanding Americans do, I was flipping through the channels during a commercial break. As I passed by these channels at the speed of light my eye caught something on Bravo. It was another episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Not a new episode, mind you, just a repeat of a repeat of a repeat that Bravo airs during their Sunday night block.

Now, you're probably saying to yourself 'So what? Cable channels are allowed to air whatever they damn well please.' Well, after lecturing you about your tone of voice I would mention that you had a point. But, thanks to the wonderful world of corporate synergy, your argument would not meet the mustard. You see, Bravo is under the huge umbrella known as NBC Universal, which is the same company that owns USA Network, which is currently airing new episodes of Law & Order: CI on Sunday nights. With all of this information at hand the following question comes to mind:

Who the hell is programming these networks?

Get your free NBC Universal Emmy campaign buttons!

Vote!OK, so this is just really cool. In an effort to drum up some buzz for their numerous Emmy nominated programs, NBC Universal is offering up free Emmy campaign buttons at their 2008 nomination website.

All you have to do is plug in your full name, street address, and e-mail and just like that, you got free buttons! 15 in all to be exact since you're allowed to check off as many as you want. Most of them have pretty funny campaign-esque sayings on them, similar to the 30 Rock button pictured at right.

Perhaps you like House (airs on FOX, but NBCU distributes it)? Then "Thank Hugh!" Or maybe you like The Office? Then get ready to "Believe in Steve." For those than can't wait for Sylar's return, don't forget to "Support our Heroes."

The only one I don't like? The Law & Order: Criminal Intent button. "D'Onofrio/Noth - Vote Both." Vote... both?? What? Does that even rhyme?

Did you know that Heroes is a top five show?

ZuckerThat was one of the many insights that NBC head Jeff Zucker had on Charlie Rose last night.

Charlie wanted to know what the top five shows in the ratings were, and while Zucker mentioned shows like Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, and House, he also included Heroes in that bunch. He named Heroes and four other shows and said "those are the top five." Now, I love Heroes as much as the next person, but I don't really remember it being in the top five that much (if at all). Top ten or twenty? Sometimes I guess, but not top five.

Battlestar Galactica TV movies on the way?

RazorApparently, NBC Universal wants to make more Battlestar Galactica television movies like Razor, possibly as soon as this summer. According to Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune, discussions have just started regarding this.

Ronald Moore has stated that Battlestar Galactica in its current format would not be continued after this season. Given the death rate of the surviving humans, I wonder if any of the characters will be left to film after the season's end. My guess is that the TV movies would serve as filler for what could be a long delay between the first and second halves of season four.

What keeps Battlestar Galactica intriguing is that, much like Lost, you never know who will be alive or dead by the end of the episode. This makes for exciting storytelling.

On the other hand, the TV movies could simply be tie-ins to the upcoming prequel series Caprica. What do you think the TV movies would be about?

Telemundo loves breasts

Without Breasts There Is No Paradise

I'll have the NBC upfront info later today, but I had to post some news about the upfront from NBC Univeral-owned network Telemundo. They announced their new schedule today too, and one of the new shows is titled Sin Tetas No Hay Paraiso. We've reported on this show before. The English translation is Without Breasts There Is No Paradise.

That's right, Telemundo is going to have a TV show about breasts. This gives the term "upfront" a whole new meaning.

When this show was first announced last year, I thought it was something that Ben Silverman grabbed to air on NBC itself, but it doesn't look like that's the case.

If Telemundo really wants a hit on their hands, they should come up with a companion show to go along with this one. Maybe call it Without Beer There Is No Heaven. Really get the young guy demographic. And old guy demographic too. Judging from the photo above, it's not only about breasts but also cell phones and skirts.

NBC's Zucker says ratings don't matter anymore

Jeff ZuckerWhat do you do when you're losing a race, coming in last in a field of four, and have to justify your dismal performance? You change the scoring. What am I talking about? When asked about why his network is doing so poorly in the ratings, president and chief executive officer of NBC Universal, Jeff Zucker told Television Week, "It's not just about the ratings anymore."

What? (Imagine that as said by the Aflac duck). Do you think he really meant it, or is Jeff just hoping that the advertisers won't mind that his primetime lineup is getting its collective butt kicked by CBS, ABC and Fox most every night on the week?

Just to be fair, Zucker explains that the ratings don't matter because the network is fulfilling the expectations of the advertisers. "We're in an era where - we've made a commitment to our advertisers to a schedule. Advertisers have an expectation. It's not just about the ratings anymore. It's about our relationship with our advertisers and what their expectations are."

NBC Universal to collaborate with ad agency

NBCAdvertising is everywhere on TV and online, and not merely in the form of traditional commercials. Most of us are used to viewing ads before watching online videos, and product placement can even be humorous if done properly (30 Rock does it particularly well). Can the partnership between advertising and entertainment go too far, though?

NBC Universal is joining forces with an advertising agency on a new venture: product-centered programming. The network's Digital Studio will work with the Omnicom Group to create several series that focus on the products of participating sponsors. These programs will air on NBC's "digital properties" (websites, for example.).

Jack Klugman sues NBC over Quincy profits

Jack KlugmanThis is a very odd story, and not because it involves one-half of TV's most enjoyable sitcoms ever, The Odd Couple, but it's not about that show. It's about his other successful series. Jack Klugman has filed suit against NBC Universal over profits from Quincy, M.E. The oddity is that the show hasn't been in production for 25 years and this hasn't come up till now!

Bionic Woman is probably done; Ryan is "defeated and depressed"

michelle ryanIn the least surprising news I've seen all week, the British tabloid Daily Mail is reporting that NBC's Bionic Woman will be canceled, "barring a last-minute miracle." The Mail's "source" tells the tab that star Michelle Ryan has returned to England "because the writing was on the wall," and is "defeated and depressed" that things didn't work out. Their source also claims that NBC Universal is pinning the blame for the show's failure on Ryan: "Their bet was that American viewers would fall in love with her looks, personality, and the character she played."

Gee, you think this "source" was a friend of Ryan's? Anyway, given the fact that a) this news hasn't shown up in any of the trades, like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter (UPDATE: this article in Variety says that the show is "probably canceled," which isn't that definitive, either), and b) the British tabs never let the truth get in the way of a juicy story, you have to take this news with a whole shaker of salt. Still, it's not like people were clamoring to see Bionic Woman return after the writers' strike. So, I'm sure it's just a matter of time before Ben Silverman and the folks at NBC make this cancellation official.

As part of NBCU takeover, 25% of Oxygen employees gone

Oxygen LogoThe takeover of Oxygen by NBC Universal has now lead to 25% of Oxygen's employees being let go, per this Variety article. "We have consolidated functions and operations, resulting in job impact," said J.B. Perrette, president of distribution for NBCU. Can't you just see Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) delivering that line. "Job Impact." I love wordspin. Not "We just told 65 people that come the New Year they'll be on the streets looking for work" but "We told 65 people that their jobs have been impacted."

Get yourself a Heroes painting or a football from Friday Night Lights

Heroes paintingThis Monday, NBC Universal and other companies are starting an online auction where fans can win actual props and other items from their favorite shows on the network.

Items up for bid include three paintings from Heroes done by Tim Sale, a jersey, megaphone, and signed football from Friday Night Lights, and even the Timex watch and shirt that Steve Carell wore in the "Convention" episode of The Office. There's also a signed jacket from Las Vegas and a poker set used by the cast of 30 Rock.

Hey, maybe if you get enough items from a show, you can perform episodes from the show in your living room while this strike is going on.

NBC Universal takes House off of iTunes

Hugh LaurieNow, before all of you rush into the comments section below and jump down my throat with cries of "Bob, House is a FOX show! Will you get your facts straight?!", please note that even though it's on FOX, the show is actually produced by a subsidiary of NBC Universal. Oh the wacky world of television!

The high-rated Hugh Laurie drama has become the latest victim of the NBC Universal/iTunes battle. Most other NBC shows were pulled off Apple's music network several weeks ago after the two parties couldn't come to terms (Chuck and Journeyman are still available, because they aren't produced by NBC Universal). Amazon's Unbox now carries NBC shows.

NBC Universal sues over Dean Martin Show DVDs

Dean MartinYou've probably seen those half-hour long informercials for The Best of the Dean Martin Show DVDs. They were on the weekends so many times over the past few years that they seemed more like a weekly TV show themselves and not an informercial. Well, I hope you ordered the DVDs already and got them, because they're not available anymore.

NBC Universal has sued Guthy-Renker Corporation, Greg Garrison Productions, Ronald L. Horse, Black Horse Television Enterprises, and Barrump-Bump Publishing Company.
