Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.
If you loved
The Rockford Files and you own the season sets, you'll probably want to buy Volume 1 of the movies (four in this batch) that is being released tomorrow. They weren't as good as the series, of course (sort of like the
Spenser: For Hire movies that Robert Urich did after that series ended), but they're actually pretty good.
And season 6 of
Kate & Allie is out. That reminds me: I still have to get season 5.

While this off-network summer season has reached a fevered pitch after last with
the return of Mad Men, not to be overlooked is that other cable shows have also been delivering the goods. Shows like
Burn Notice and
Leverage, for instance. Regarding
Leverage, there's good news to report.
TNT will air two extra Leverage episodes in the weeks ahead.

One of the highlights of this year's primetime Emmys is going to be musical. That's right, I'm psychic. I've looked into the future and can tell you without equivocation that
Josh Groban singing a medley of TV themes from 60 years of programs will stop the show.
On September 21, the night ABC broadcasts the big anniversary of the
Primetime Emmys, producer Ken Ehrlich has tapped balladeer Groban for a four-minute medley of TV themes. The mind reels with the possibilities of how many memorable melodies he can fit into 240 seconds.
Some choices seem obvious:
Cheers (where everybody knows your name),
The Jeffersons (movin' on up to the big time),
The Beverly Hillbillies (black gold, Texas T),
The Flintstones (they're a modern stone-aged family).
Like I said, the possibilities are vast, and the promise of a something hilarious is sure fire.

(S02E05) "Sammy's gettin' some hammy tonight." - Sam Axe
How great was it seeing Michael and Fi still sitting in that car? I like to imagine that they were sitting there for an entire week while we waited for the new episode.
Not that I didn't enjoy Michael's how-to on exposing covert security but I feel bad for the delivery guy. As if it isn't bad enough to get to the delivery and realize you've been pranked, this poor guy is also going to get the crap beaten out of him. No wonder Michael helps everyone he meets. He has a lot of bad karma to make up for.

While channel-surfing on my little office TV last week around 1 a.m., looking for something to keep me company, I stumbled across an episode of
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (star Richard Basehart, pictured), followed by
Combat!.
"What is this channel that plays all these old shows I remember as a kid?" I asked the TV Gods.
"It's AmericanLife," they replied. "They feature classic family shows aimed at Baby Boomers -- shows like
Remington Steele, The Courtship of Eddie's Father,
Lost in Space, and
Welcome Back, Kotter."
Ok, the TV Gods didn't really say that. I looked it up on
the AmericanLife Web site, not to be confused with Showtime's
This American Life, the fab documentary series hosted by Ira Glass.

Welcome to TV Squad Lists (formerly 'The Five'), a feature where each blogger has a chance to list his or her own rundown of things in television that stand out from the rest, both good and bad.
A few days ago I wrote a piece about the 10 worst movies based on TV shows and I got quite a few responses. One reader asked if there were any good movies based on shows, so I decided to come up with another list. Please keep in mind, this is only my opinion, albeit an expert one.
1. The Untouchables: The script by David Mamet deserves much of the credit, but the casting is phenomenal, also. Sean Connery and Kevin Costner make the perfect team and Robert De Niro's plucked hairline makes his Capone a pleasure to watch. Like the show, the film pays close attention to detail and isn't afraid to show the good guys doing whatever it takes.
2. The Fugitive: This is exactly what a big screen version should be...BIG! Terrific action sequences and great locations. Ford's updated Richard Kimble does exactly what he should and Tommy Lee Jones is dead-on as the cop who has to do his job, but knows something is "hinkey." Just like the show, the movie keeps us on the edge of our seat and rooting for the good guy, while we can't wait to see the bad guy.

We've already heard that Matt Damon might be asked to play Captain Kirk in the new Star Trek movie that J.J. Abrams is going to direct (if you haven't heard, Matt Damon might be asked to play Captain Kirk in the new Star Trek movie that J.J. Abrams is going to direct). Now comes word that not only is Damon in talks to star in the flick, but that Adrien Brody and Gary Sinise are in talks with Paramount too to play Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy.
Of course, the latest "breaking news" a couple of weeks ago said that Abrams wasn't going to direct the movie but it was officially announced this week that he is going to direct it, so who knows if this is true or not. But it's interesting to talk about. I think those are all good choices, especially Damon as Kirk.

Geez. I guess we know who television's "It" man is these days. J.J. Abrams, creator of
Felicity, Lost and
Alias and director of
Mission: Impossible III, signed new television and film production deals with Warner Bros. and Paramount, totalling approximately $60 million. According to
E! online, the deals wrap up some intense negotiating where nearly every Hollywood studio was vying to get the Abrams name on its stuff. There's a funny quote from a Warner Bros. exec in the LA Times, saying, "J.J. is such a unique and extraordinary talent, someone whom I've admired for years." I laugh at that because, if he was so talented, why didn't you bozos sign him years ago instead of now when he's hot? Oh, I think I just answered my own question.
J.J.'s television deal with Warner Bros. gives him $4-$6 million a year and pays $2 million of Bad Robot's overhead costs. The movie deal with Paramount gives him $2.5 million a year over five years, plus costs and $5 million for his first movie. Paramount execs call J.J. "the next Steven Spielberg."
No pressure, J.J.

Keri Russell is the new face of Cover Girl. She'll begin appearing in new television advertisements for Cover Girl's Outlast Double Lipshine later this month and she'll make her magazine debut in August. The television ad is a bit unusual for Cover Girl; Keri fights ninjas and looks gorgeous doing it. Apparently since her appearance in
Mission Impossible: III, the former Felicity star is now an action hero!
