When Ashton Kutcher, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, Elle Macpherson and the rest of the panel for Kutcher's CW show
The Beautiful Life, I was figuring the panel would field nothing but questions about Mischa Barton, given the recent
publicity over her hospitalization and other personal issues. Surprisingly, though, the critics actually wanted to focus on the show itself, which is about the lives of young models and how they deal with the various pressures of that lifestyle.
However, in the middle of the panel, a Barton question did come up. Kutcher was quick to defend the actress, saying she was "never unavailable for a day of work." With all the young people in the cast, he thinks the "good thing about Mischa is that she's done it before," and can provide guidance.

It's CW day at the TCAs, and network honcho Dawn Ostroff presented her executive session in the middle of the day, after a parade of panels that included one pretty face after another, including Ashton Kutcher, Elle Macpherson, the cast of
Vampire Diaries and a few alumni from the original
Melrose Place. Ostroff fully admitted that the network is courting 35-and-under women with their shows, trying to build on the "one tweet per minute" success of shows like
One Tree Hill,
Gossip Girl, and
90210.But what about two of the network's more veteran and male-oriented shows,
Smallville and
Supernatural? Does the network still believe in them? Ostroff tried to give a definitive "yes," but the rest of her panel, and the promos shown before she appeared, say otherwise.

There
has been a delay on the new CW series
The Beautiful Life, which is a new drama about a bunch of models sharing a house in New York. It sounds very much like the usual show found on the CW, doesn't it? Anyway, it is executive produced by Ashton Kutcher and stars Mischa Barton (formerly of
The O.C.).
While Mischa Barton has been having
some personal problems recently, the network claims that the reason behind the nine day delay of the start of production is that some of the sets were not completed on time. This is what they say.
I have nothing against Mischa Barton and I hope she solves whatever problems she is having and goes on to a long and prosperous career. However, I'd have to be pretty naive to think that Barton's emotional issues were not a factor in any delay of the start of her new show.

Over the weekend, the Wall Street Journal wrote an article pondering the demise of
The O.C. It lost 26% of its audience when season two started up. Then 15% more disappeared (myself included) for season three. And, now in season four,
The O.C. lost a whopping 39% of its crucial, age 18-49 viewers from last season. It's in so much trouble that the network has even launched
an online effort to save the show. (Or gauge viewer interest)
Why?
The article includes a very frank interview with
The O.C. creator, Josh Schwartz, who admits some mistakes. He says, opening up the series during season two to include storylines for the parents was too much to juggle. When it started to get stale, he killed off Caleb Nichol. Smart move, he says. But, he wonders whether it was such a hot idea to kill off Marissa Cooper's character at the end of last season.

It's no secret that
The O.C. is in trouble. It consistently ranks #4 up against tough competition on Thursday nights and it lost its star, Mischa Barton, at the end of last season. Now, Fox has taken the unusual step of launching its own campaign to save
The O.C. from cancellation. There's a petition, or 'loyalty oath'
on Fox's website. It doesn't directly say that
The O.C. is in danger of cancelation, but it does say "not enough people out there have come back to Newport this season" and "good shows deserve to be watched." It asks visitors to sign a 'loyalty oath' that they will ignore all interruptions and watch
The O.C. on Thursdays at nine. The whole thing is done a little tongue-in-cheek, but only a little. So far there are more than 71,000 'signatures' but that's probably not nearly enough to 'Save
The O.C.', if it really does need saving.

The season premiere of
The O.C. will debut online one week before its premiere date on Fox. The entire episode will be available for early viewing on MySpace and MyFoxLocal websites in 24 owned and operated television markets beginning this Thursday. It premieres on the network on Thursday, November 2nd. The second episode will also debut online before it airs on the Fox network.
The O.C. is the latest in a long line of Fox shows that debuted online this season, including
Prison Break,
Justice,
Vanished,
'Til Death,
Bones,
Happy Hour and
The Loop. Of all those,
The O.C. probably has the most to gain from early internet exposure. So far, Fox has only ordered
half a season and, in its new 9 o'clock time slot,
The O.C. is going up against heavy-hitters
Grey's Anatomy and
CSI. Even Howie Mandel looks like a threat at this point.

Facing some intimidating competition this fall, FOX has only ordered up 16 episodes of season four of
The O.C. The network moved the teen soap opera to the 9 pm Thursday slot. After all the upfronts were announced, it turns out
The O.C. is now scheduled against ratings juggernauts
CSI and
Grey's Anatomy. This is dicey news for
The O.C., which has averaged 25 episodes for its first three seasons. But, the show may have died anyway since the writers killed off the extremely unlikable Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton). Plus, who knows whether it will have any legs as the kids head off to college (most likely in the same town)?
You know, I think the show got really dull this year. How many times can we see Ryan and Marissa break up? And how many times can we see Seth and Summer fight? I think three seasons is all
The O.C. had in it.

Mischa Barton and I are both happy about her character's death on
The O.C. last week. We just have different reasons. I am just thrilled that she's no longer on the show. Mischa, however, says she's happy her character, Marissa Cooper, got killed in a car wreck rather than "one of those lame farewells." She told Newsweek, "Well, I was really excited that I got to die, to be honest. I've done pretty much everything else with that character." Like pout. And drink. And do drugs. And pout some more. She said that the decision to kill of her character was the producers', not hers. But, she says, she's ready to focus on movies now. She was only on
The O.C. for three seasons.

According to reports, a coyote sneaked onto the set of The OC recently and found its way into Mischa Barton's trailer, where it ate her food and was later discovered by Barton and her co-star, Rachel Bilson. The crew were able to chase the coyote out of the trailer and off the set. That's all that's being reported, but I figured their had to be more to the story, so I tracked down the coyote for a brief interview:

is the new spokesmodel for BeBe clothing line and
the photos of her are downright
mannequin-like. Dead, even. Her eyes look completely vacant in every photo and it's totally freaking me out.
