Neil Patrick Harris Will Take on Will on 'Glee'

neil_patrick_harris_singing_Tony_AwardsSo, this has all come together. CBS said okay. Joss Whedon came on board. And they named the character Bryan Adam, inspired by the Canadian pop star which must be some kind of tribute to Cobie Smulders' character Robin Scherbatsky on 'How I Met Your Mother.' All that's missing is Harold and Kumar dropping by for a blow.

In plain speak, 'Glee' will welcome Neil Patrick Harris for a guest role in an upcoming sweeps episode. The 'How I Met Your Mother' star has been rumored to be doing 'Glee,' but only if CBS let him appear on the competition during the heart of the TV season. It wouldn't be as bad if it was a summer series, but this is sweeps. That means some CBS show will be going up against Neil's 'Glee' episode. Michael Ausiello broke the details of Neil's character on the show. If you don't want to know, don't follow us on the jump. Just wander off and read the next story.

Molly Shannon Latest Star Cast on 'Glee'

molly shannonLook, I'm not saying that 'Glee' can do no wrong (the fake pregnancy storyline obviously refutes that), but they sure do a lot of things right. Not only do they have Kristin Chenoweth returning, Idina Menzel joining the cast, but now Molly Shannon is coming to wreak havoc at McKinley High.

According to Michael Ausiello, Shannon is playing Brenda Castle, McKinley's newest astronomy teacher/ badminton coach (did your high school have either of these things? Mine sure didn't). Not only that, but she's set to become Sue Sylvester's arch-nemesis, which is brilliant for several reasons.

One, because if Sue Sylvester has another arch nemesis besides Will, then that means more screen time for Jane Lynch, which improves any show by at least 65% (FACT).

Review: Glee - Sectionals (winter finale)

glee_jane_lynch_michael_morrison(S01E13) I would like to say that Glee saved the best for last, but I can't. You see, this wasn't the end. "Sectionals" wasn't the end of the season at all. What it was, in fact, was a great intermission in the middle of a terrific musical. And since it was just the halfway point, and since Glee has a brilliant way of honoring Broadway and musicals and great entertainment, there were songs in this episode that epitomized that spirit.

Oh, and if you're wondering if the dramatic elements in the show were addressed, they were. But if you think it was all tied up in a pretty bow, think again. There was so much great stuff in this show that my head is spinning. I'll do my best to sort it out. To see if I succeeded, and to share the joy of Glee, read on.

Review: Glee - Mattress

Glee: Mattress
(S01E12) While they were in there, I told 'em to go ahead and yank out those tear ducts. Wasn't usin' 'em." - Sue Sylvester

I wouldn't say this is the best Glee episode we've had, but it had some good moments, and of course, that big reveal, which we'll talk about after the jump. The mattress scene was a nice little number, but I wasn't familiar with the song performed by Rachel and Finn, so that didn't do as much for me.

Sue Sylvester was back to true form from her compassionate scene with her sister a few episodes ago. It's hard to believe she'd have that much feeling for her sister, and yet still be a big you-know-what in the rest of her life. Glee breaks down stereotypes in some cases, but I'm not sure Sue falls into that category. She still seems like a caricature to me.

Review: Glee - Ballad

Glee: Ballad
(S01E10) "What does a heart attack feel like?" - Finn, in a panicky call to Kurt after facing Quinn's parents at dinner

The subject of this episode of Glee was ballads. It was learned that the club must perform a ballad at sectionals in a few weeks, and the writers managed to weave the soulful songs into every storyline. The first was "Endless Love," sung by Will and Rachel. It set the tone for one of the storylines -- her crush on the teacher. In fact, the episode was filled with odd-couple pairings, thanks to a hat-draw for ballad partners.

Glee: Throwdown

Glee - Jane Lynch(S01E07) "I don't trust a man with curly hair..." - Sue

I'll just say right off the bat -- I was a little bored by this episode. I think because it centered on the bickering and manipulations of Sue and Will. It was annoying and sort of made me want to turn the channel.

But I stuck with it because, of course, I had this review to write, but also because of the musical numbers scattered throughout the show. It clarified for me what I love about Glee:

  • Musical numbers.
  • Kurt. Much more Kurt is needed.
  • Any storylines with Jayma Mays (Emma Pillsbury), particularly those involving Matthew Morrison (Will).

After the jump, more about this episode and what I don't love about Glee.

Glee: The Rhodes Not Taken

Glee: The Rhodes Not Taken
(S01E05) "Oh, Bambi, I cried so hard when they shot your mom." - A drunken Kurt to Emma

Ok, after hitting it out of the park since the debut (for me anyway), this episode sort of flatlined for me. At least, it didn't grab me as much as, say, last week's episode with the Beyonce song and the football team dancing on the field. I couldn't wait to get on here and right about that episode, but this week? Not so much. Maybe it's because there was not enough Kurt in this episode. Need.More.Kurt. Need more of Kurt saying lines like, "Glee Club has just been rocked with its first scandal..."

Glee: Acafellas

Glee - Acafellas
(S01E03) "I'm gay." - Kurt to Mercedes

We're three episodes into Glee, and we continue to learn more about the characters' angst, drama, dreams and passion. Kurt told Mercedes he'd never said those words out loud, but -- like the rest of us (excluding Mercedes) -- he must have realized he was gay. I mean, come on, the kid is clearly gay.

There were a lot of great lines in this episode, but Kurt had some of the best, including this one about his car: "My dad got it for me for my 16th birthday if I swore to stop wearing form-fitting sweaters that stop at the knee. What he doesn't know won't hurt him." (He's wearing a red form-fitting sweater that stops at the knee.)

Glee: Showmance

Glee_cast_fox
(S01E02)
After the terrific premiere episode of Glee last May, it was probably inevitable that the second episode would have a hard time recapturing that euphoria. For the first few minutes, however, Glee had succeeded. As Will made his entrance into McKinley High, high on the joy that the New Directions had brought back to his life and seeing it reflected in the lives of the students in the club, I related to the euphoria. I love that euphoria.

As the music to Dean Martin's "Ain't That A Kick in the Head" played (sans vocal) in the background, it seemed that Glee was sailing. More on the rest of the show after the jump.
