MTV's Total Request Live is totally cancelled

Old Carson DalyI guess the real news should be "MTV's Total Request Live is still on", because I -- and anybody else that is over twelve years old and/or doesn't listen to the Jonas Brothers -- had definitely forgotten about it. Really, what can be said about a program that started going downhill after Carson Daly left? The show will attempt to go out with some semblance of a bang in the form of a two-hour Saturday afternoon special next month. I'm not sure if anyone will cry, but I can almost guarantee plenty of unnecessary gyration and poorly-wailed lyrics.

Britney will be at the VMAs

Britney Spears Rolling Stone coverIt looks like after some divisiveness on the subject (including a report confirming her non-appearance), Britney Spears will in fact be making an appearance at the 25th MTV Video Music Awards this coming Sunday in Los Angeles. Britney has been nominated 16 times for VMAs but never won a Moon Man.

This year she has three nominations. With that, I don't know why anybody would think she wouldn't show up. I realize that many thought her last VMA appearance/performance was a trainwreck, but look at what she was going through at the time.

Britney does not have a performance scheduled and I would guess that her appearance will likely be more demure (if MTV is capable of such a thing). I presume she'll just be accepting the award (I think she'll win something. It would be a good career boost. Even Scorsese won an award eventually). Of course, I could be complete wrong. Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of MTV executives?

My question is: will Britney's appearance at the VMA's make you more likely to tune in?

Katy Perry plans to make out with a female celeb at the VMAs

katy perryThere's a difference between cheap, tawdry publicity stunts that are (pop) culturally significant and those that are just, well, cheap and tawdry. An example of the former is Madonna's infamous VMA performance from 2003 in which she performed and locked lips with not only Christina Aguilera, but Britney Spears as well. An example of the latter would be basically anything involving Katy Perry.

if you've walked past a TV, into a retail store or gotten into a car this summer, chances are you've heard Katy Perry's single, "I Kissed a Girl." There's an even bigger chance that if you just read that sentence, "I Kissed a Girl" is now going to be stuck in your head for the rest of the day. Perry is performing that song during this year's VMA telecast on September 7th, and if you haven't already guessed, she's looking for a girl to kiss.

VMAs will try to survive without Britney

britney spears 2007 vmasLook, I'm just going to go ahead and take credit for this one. Obviously Britney listened to me when I praised her for her awkwardly funny VMA promos with this year's host, Russell Brand, and agreed that that was enough for this year. Her manager, Larry Rudolph, has confirmed that despite reports, Brit will not be picking up the sparkly underwear from the cleaners in order to perform at this year's VMAs.

Fans of unruly extensions and gum-smacking need not fear, however: there is still a good chance that Ms. Spears will make an appearance at the fête. Britney is nominated for Video of the Year for her single, "Piece of Me." Even though Britney Spears has been nearly synonymous with MTV and the VMAs for most of her career, she's never actually won one of the coveted moon men, so I'm not sure how good her chances are of actually making an acceptance speech. Regardless, I wouldn't be surprised if producers still find something for her to do during the show; if there's one thing for which Britney can always be relied on, it's creating buzz. Well, that and single-handedly keeping Cheetos in business.

The MTV Video Music Awards air on September 7.

Sarah Connor Chronicles guy wants to play The Riddler

Brian Austin GreeneI'd love to hear the context in which this quote was uttered in this MTV interview with Sarah Connor Chronicles star Brian Austin Green.

Green says that he would love to play The Riddler in the next Batman movie. He knows he's going to be busy "killing machines and people" on the FOX show, but he's still available to be in the movie, even though it might take a lot of time to prepare for such a role.

A lot of people online are giving Greene flak for being presumptuous that they would even consider him for such a pivotal role in a big screen blockbuster and also for sort of campaigning publicly for the role. But I wonder exactly why it was brought up in the first place. Did the interviewer ask him, "So Brian, how's it going?" Then he answered "It's going well. I'd love to play The Riddler in the next Batman movie." Or did the interviewer ask him about The Dark Knight and ask him if he'd like to be in the next movie and Green offered this answer and the question was left out of the interview?

MTV plans remake of The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Tim Curry Rocky HorrorGenerally speaking, I'm not an anti-remake person. There are times when a remake is perfectly acceptable and oftentimes can improve upon the best of the original, like Battlestar Galactica, for instance. However -- you knew that was coming, didn't you? -- this remake just sounds like a disaster in the making. MTV is going to turn The Rocky Horror Picture Show into a TV movie. They will take the 1975 cult classic sci-fi, horror musical spoof and give it a 2008 spin.

Oh, please! You cannot strike lightning twice. Rocky Horror was a phenomenon. It was a cult classic because the people who found and supported the movie in all those midnight movie showings felt like they were part of a "with it" crowd. It was like we had all found a diamond in the rough, a film that Hollywood just didn't get. How can MTV possibly think they'll recapture that zeitgeist in a TV movie?

Don't call it a comeback: Britney's VMA promos - VIDEOS

russell brand britney spears vmasWe all know the story: Britney Spears got divorced, shaved her head, beat a car with an umbrella, went to rehab for a little while, and generally acted in an unstable fashion in front of the paparazzi. Then, last year, she was supposed to put all of that behind her and reclaim her rightful crown as a pop princess by performing her new single, "Gimme More" at the MTV Video Music Awards.

So she opened the show--but her performance was more befitting a zombie stripper than a multi-platinum artist. Things continued to go downhill for a while, until her dad stepped in. After that, it was better extensions, visits with her kids and guest spots on How I Met Your Mother. It was good all around.

Now, after several months of relative stability, Britney may be ready for a comeback from her comeback. Along with VMA host Russell Brand, Spears is starring in a couple of promos for the VMAs. The videos are after the jump.

Bette Midler blasts MTV - VIDEO

Bette MidlerIf you've ever seen Bette Midler on stage in concert or on one of her TV specials -- when they used to really do musical specials that were more than just filmed concerts -- you know that The Divine Miss M knows how to put on quite a show. There are songs, dancers, hula skirts, motorized wheelchairs, weepy ballads, clackers, Soph jokes and ukuleles. And the music is all live!

Currently, Bette's encamped at Caesar's Palace doing The Showgirl Must Go On. Talking about state of today's divas and referred to The Buggles song "Video Killed the Radio Star" to take a broad shot as MTV. No, she wasn't turning all prudish and complaining about the morality of MTV. No way.

Goodbye, $550,000 Janet Jackson boob fine

Jackson and TimberlakeI remember watching the halftime show of the 2004 Super Bowl and seeing Janet Jackson's nipple at the end of her duet with Justin Timberlake. I couldn't believe what I had just seen and I knew it was going to be a big thing. Of course, no one knew at the time just how big it was going to become. It actually changed the way TV shows are presented now.

But here's some good news for logic: a federal appeals court has thrown out the $550,000 fine that the FCC gave CBS for broadcasting the football boob scene. In the ruling the court said the FCC acted "arbitrarily and capriciously" when they handed out the fine.

Made and True Life are back

Russell Simmons MTV's documentary series Made and True Life are back with all new episodes next weekend. The network will air two new episodes of True Life and four new episodes of Made. The episodes will air in an afternoon programming block on July 20th from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET.

I think I'm mostly likely to watch Made: Model, airing at 3 p.m. ET. The show will turn Adam Stewart, a hippie kid with long hair, into a male model. He'll work with experts on his appearance for five weeks leading up to a senior class fashion show. There he'll compete with the other So-Cal hotties for a modeling contract. But here's why I'm interested. Russell Simmons and Pete Wentz will guest star on the episode and give Adam some advice. Why them? I guess Russell Simmons is okay; that guy could give advice on how to be successful in any industry. And he does own Phat Farm. But Pete Wentz? Did I miss something?

I put a full description of the new shows after the jump.

Reality celebrities and their unfortunate existence

The HillsIn the early days of reality TV as we know it, when the Real World was less of an alcoholic sex romp and more of a genuine social experiment, the "usual" way for talentless people become famous was to either be born into obscene wealth or fall down a well. Or both. Then, some time around the appearance of Survivor Season One, normal folks realized that they could capitalize on exaggerating their personalities on television. "Richard Hatch walks around naked? And he's gay? And painfully manipulative? Yes, I will sacrifice my time and attention to watch your crappy show."

Diddy really needs a good assistant

Diddy in a suitHopefully, the hip-hop mogul will get one on VH1's I Want To Work for Diddy premiering this summer. Apparently, Diddy's staff is not doing their jobs. He was almost snubbed from his own party this weekend. He hosted a bash at Lily Pond in the Hamptons and almost didn't get in because the club was at capacity with over 1,000 people ready to get drunk and crunk with the rapper.

The artist-formerly-known-as-Puffy was denied his grand entrance (a three car procession of Cadillac Escalades). The fleet was forced to turn around and the Making the Band host had to go in the back door. Once he got in the club, the DJ turned off the music for fifteen minutes while the V.I.P. room was readied for his highness. That will show everyone a good time. Don't do the grand entrance. Just turn off the music and make everyone wait so you can get settled.

See, if he only had a good assistant... Hopefully, he'll find what he's looking for on his new VH1 show. I Want to Work for Diddy comes out in August.

MTV's bringing back Run's House and adding Buzzin' to summer line-up

Run's House is back!MTV has a new reality series called Buzzin'. The show will follow unlikely pair Shwayze, self-described as the "only black kid in Malibu," and his best friend Cisco Adler, producer / singer / tabloid bad boy. Buzzin' will chronicle the pair (and their crew) as they hit different bumps and twists on the path to stardom. Sounds like The Ashlee Simpson Show meets Rob and Big. I'm unimpressed. But at least now I know why they were on the red carpet at The Hills season finale. Their publicist came up and announced, "I have Shwayze and Cisco." I thought, "Where's Heidi and Spencer?! And who are these guys?"

Let's skip to something I'm actually excited about. The fifth season of Run's House is starting this summer. We'll get to see Rev Run go on tour with Kid Rock while Justine has to hold down the fort back in Jersey. We also get to meet new edition to the Run family, Miley.

The new season of Run's House premieres July 16th at 10 p.m. ET and the new series Buzzin' premieres on July 23rd at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Shane Sparks: The TV Squad Interview

Shane SparksOn Tuesday I headed over to the Warner Bros. studios in Burbank, CA for a taping of America's Best Dance Crew. I sat back in the V.I.P. room while the taping was going on. The show, which tapes at Stage 23, has a gigantic set this season (probably due to the first season's enormous and unexpected success). The taping is so boring though. While I was watching, they spent about twenty minutes taping the first thirty seconds where Mario Lopez starts things off. Each time they tweaked something he said, he got a little more annoyed. The audience never seemed to get tired of doing their job, applauding like maniacs.

But before anything started I got to interview judge Shane Sparks. Find out more about what Sparks had to say about his involvement with America's Best Dance Crew, his absence on this season's So You Think You Can Dance, Wade Robson, and the JabbaWockeeZ after the jump.

Britney may still be at the MTV Video Music Awards

Britney Spears at the MTV VMA AwardsDespite being panned for her performance at last year's MTV Video Music Awards, it seems that MTV wants her back. the president of MTV Music Networks Van Toffler has been quoted as saying "Everyone deserves a second or third chance, right?"

Spears "Gimme More" performance at last year's awards at the Palms Casino Resort drew 7.1 million viewers according to Nielsen Media Research. It was the show's most talked-about moment.

This year's VMA's will take place at the Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles on September 7th. The show's performances will occur on the lot's various sound stages, rooftops and faux city streets.

Honestly, doesn't Britney have enough money? Shouldn't she concentrate more on attempting to see her kids? She looked pretty out of it during the last show (which is probably the source of all the gossip) and it's time for her to take a long break. Unless, of course, she's being prepared for the harvest.
