I'm sorry, but while I think that everyone is entitled to their opinion about "best this" and "best that" (not to be confused with "favorite this" and "favorite that"), sometimes such a list has some entries that just make you scratch your head so much that you have to throw the whole list away and start over. Case in point,
this list of the 10 Best TV Pilots from the new issue of
TV Guide.
While I'm not going to sit here and argue about shows on the list like
Lost,
The Sopranos, and
Alias, I am going to take issue with the inclusion of
Desperate Housewives,
The Shield, and
Football Wives. Honestly, are these true representatives of the best first episodes of TV shows? Forget about what the shows became (great shows can often have so-so early episodes), just the first episodes themselves. Was there truly anything special about
Desperate Housewives that would place it ahead of...oh, I don't know, 400 other shows in the history of television?

Wow, I really like this show! But darn, I'll have to wait to see what happens next, because
FOX only sent us the pilot episode. I hope the continuing episodes are just as good. I expect nothing less from writer/producer J.J. Abrams, who already has a slew of hits on
his IMDB page, including
Lost and
Alias (and I have high hopes for the upcoming
Star Trek feature film, which he's directing and producing). Also on board for
Fringe are the writers of
Transformers:
Alex Kurtzman and
Roberto Orci. Good combo there.
Let's see ... what can I tell you about
Fringe without giving away any spoilers? The first scene hooked me and wouldn't let go until ... well, it still hasn't let go, because I can't wait to see what happens next. The show is equal parts
Lost,
Heroes,
CSI, and
The X-Files, and the pilot episode covers a lot of ground in the set-up, but also ends with lots of questions.

August has been a slow month for these "Best XXXX of All-Time" and "Worst XXXX Sitcoms of the Decade" lists, but here's an interesting one:
the 20 best seasons of the last 20 years.
It's an interesting subject for a list because TV fans can often agree on what shows are generally good or bad, and we can generally agree that even the best shows have bad seasons if they run long enough. But if you think about the shows that you've watched over the past 20 years (and watched
all of the seasons, not just episodes here and there), what seasons stand out to you? Off the top of my head, before I even read the article, I thought of either season 2 or season 3 of
The West Wing (the list writer picks season 2) and I would obviously pick a season of
The X-Files or
The Simpsons, though it would be hard to pick one season (he picks season 4 of the former and season 4 of the latter). Also on the list: season 2 of
Buffy and season 1 of
Deadwood. The first seasons of
Friday Night Lights and
Firefly? Really?
The list is for the past 20 years, but it leans heavily towards shows of the mid-90s and the 2000s. How about season 2 or 3 of
NewsRadio? Or how about shows like
Lost,
The Sopranos,
Mad Men,
30 Rock,
Friends, or
Seinfeld? They explain their methodology but it seems a little lame to me.

posted earlier today about
Michael Phelps' upcoming hosting duties on
Saturday Night Live. The Olympic swimming champ isn't wasting any time capitalizing on his stardom, because now he's also landed a cameo on
HBO's
Entourage.
According to the World Entertainment News Network,
the eight-time gold medal winner will appear as himself in an upcoming episode of the buddy-series, which begins its fifth season on Sept. 7.
Phelps certainly must have some good people working with him, because in addition to hosting
SNL, he'll be among the presenters at the
MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 7.

Lost may be the twistiest-turniest show on TV, but there is still one thing you can always depend on: death is never the end. Producers have proven this once again by announcing the
return of the late LAPD officer, Ana Lucia.
Michelle Rodriguez, who played Ana Lucia during
Lost's second season, wasn't exactly the most
popular character the drama has ever had, so I doubt her resurrection was the result of a rabid fan uprising.
Rodriguez, of course, isn't the first deceased "Tailie"
Lost has brought back.
Cynthia Watros, who played Libby, appeared in one of Michael's visions last season. Rodriguez's return is fueling speculation that Mr. Eko, who met his untimely demise at the (hands?) of the smoke monster, may also return in some form.
Since we're talking about
Lost here, there isn't exactly a wealth of details available about Ana Lucia's reappearance. However, there is a little bit of interesting information, which I've put after the jump for all of you spoilerphobes.

The writing partners behind
Legally Blonde,
Ella Enchanted, and
The House Bunny, opening in theaters tomorrow, have inked a deal with
ABC Studios for a series about something they're familiar with -- them.
Screenwriters Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith have
sold a script about their crazy creative process, which, apparently, involves plenty of champagne and therapy, according to an
L.A. Times column about the pair. ABC Studios took notice of the column and approached the duo about spinning a show out of it.
Now ABC Studios has the script and is developing a series about what it calls "their friendship, partnership, and (mis)adventures in Hollywood," reports
The Hollywood Reporter. If it's a go, Lutz and Smith will pen the pilot and stay on as consulting producers.

Is there a bigger star in the world right this moment than Michael Phelps? He's poised to break Mark Spitz's record seven gold medals in one Olympics. He's already the most honored Olympic champion of all times, having won more gold medals than some entire countries.
Jeremy Schaap was singing his praises on ESPN this morning. Michael Phelps is tall, fit, good looking and has the makings of humongous success. Can't you just see him as a TV star?
As Rich pointed out, being an
Olympic champion can sometimes be a launching pad for a career on TV. For most, the fit isn't exactly right, but I think that that was the fault of the producers back then, not the Olympians.
Therefore, I'm going to help Michael and those TV bigwigs with a few ideas. Here's four existing shows that should be writing scripts for Michael Phelps right away, and one remake that's right up his alley.

JJ Abrams is a busy guy, and it looks like he's gearing up to produce one of his biggest films yet.
The
Lost co-creator/producer, currently directing the big screen
Star Trek flick, is going to produce
a disaster movie centering around an earthquake. This isn't a remake of the 70s
Irwin Allen film that starred Charlton Heston, George Kennedy, Ava Gardner, and Lorne Greene (playing Gardner's father, when he was only seven years older than she was) but a brand-spanking new adventure. It's way too early to talk about cast, but I bet Greg Grunberg will be in it. Abrams will produce the movie, but will he also direct?

Michael Ausiello over at
Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive news about
two new characters that are coming to the Lost world. No word yet on whether these characters will be on the island or off of the island, but they sound intriguing.
One is a man in his late 30s/early 40s named Caesar, who is described as "dangerous, physical, and extremely intelligent" and that he's "as skillful at charming people as he is at killing them." Sounds like an assassin type, no? The other character is Ilanna, a female in her late 20s/early 30s who is described as European, intelligent, dangerous, and "used to getting her own way." Except for the European part, that sounds like a lot of the women I've dated.
Lost starts filming its new season in less than two weeks, so we'll have the answers soon enough. And by answers I mean "more questions." This is
Lost, after all.

Right before a
Kitchen Nightmares-themed lunch, FOX held the press conference for the new J.J. Abrams show,
Fringe. On the panel were Abrams and fellow executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orici, Jeff Pinkner, and Bryan Burk, with stars Joshua Jackson, Anna Torv, and John Noble appearing via satellite from New York.
The name
The X-Files was brought up a number of times during the session, mainly because the show aims to tell a continuing story with a mythology, using scientific investigation methods and other plot points based in scientific fact. But, Abrams and company took pains to tell the gathered critics that, while the story of FBI agent Olivia Dunham (Torv) investigates the operations of the Massive Dynamic corporation will have an overall arc, there will be a "mystery of the week" to keep people who've just tuned in for the first time interested.
He realized that some of his previous shows (
Alias, Lost) are a bit more complicated than that, which was brought home one day at Greg Grunberg's house.

Is there a new trend in the television landscape? Could be. At the TCA panel for
Mad Men, creator Matt Weiner, revealed that the show is only going to
run four more years.
That's right, the man has a plan. Each season of
Mad Men will jump ahead approximately two years, so that when Don Draper's story comes to an end, it will be 1969. Can you imagine how radically the show will look by the end of the 1960s? With their attention to detail, it'll be amazing.
So what's the trend? It's setting an endpoint for a series.
Battlestar Galactica did it, and
Lost has as well. Traditionally, American television series run and run and run until the creators choose to end or the network calls it quits which usually corresponds to viewers having tuned out.
