He's the Guiness World Record holder for the most time spent in front of a television camera, and now he plans to defend that title for at least three more years. I'm speaking, of course, of Emmy-winning TV host, Regis Philbin.
Regis Philbin renewed his contract with Disney through 2011, assuring that he will be sitting beside Kelly Ripa on
Live with Regis & Kelly till he's 80-years-old.
Make that 80-years-young because even though Regis comes on as a curmudgeon, nobody would call him a grouchy old man. In fact, he's still a hoot to watch in the morning as he goes on about the tabloid headlines, the parties and openings he attended with Joy, and the status of the New York Yankees and Notre Dame football.
Frankly speaking, I'm glad that he's chosen to remain active. To me, ever since the day Johnny Carson retired from
The Tonight Show, that show has never been the same. The Jay Leno years just don't compare. Johnny retired too soon.

Near the end of today's
Live with Regis and Kelly, Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa offered their apologies to the Dominican community over remarks they made on the show last week. It seemed like a sincere apology, even if it was read from a teleprompter.
Anyway, since I don't watch the show every day, I had no idea what remark they were talking about. So I immediately fired up the ol' Google search machine and plugged in "regis kelly dominicans." Sure enough, a story (and accompanying video) came up from our cousins at TMZ about the Reege laughing at a joke where
Kelly associates "donkeys" with "Dominicans," and the ensuing protest by Dominican organizations.
But then
a click on the video clouds the issue a bit.

Look, I don't know what it is, but I'm kind of obsessed with
Regis Philbin. Maybe it's the way his hair doesn't look like it's moved since 1956, or the way he doesn't even bother to hide the fact that he has no idea who half the people are who he interviews. The point is, I get really excited any time I come across some Regis news, so I'm totally psyched that he's set to
guest star on How I Met Your Mother.
Philbin is going to play himself on the sitcom's second episode of the season. Apparently the gang runs into him at Marshall's favorite NYC burger joint.
While having Regis Philbin on the show may not earn them quite the record-breaking ratings that
Britney Spears did, it does offer a distinct advantage: The possibility of one of
Neil Patrick Harris' famous Regis impressions. Harris, who has filled in for Philbin on
Live With Regis and Kelly on several occasions, is known for doing one of the best "Reeges" out there, and that, to me, beats staring at Britney's extensions any day.

This could be the first of a new series of features here at TV Squad, where instead of reviewing shows ourselves, the ones we wouldn't ordinarily review, we get celebrities to review them. So Tom Hanks and Kathy Griffin, get your video cameras ready!
The clip after the jump is from
Live with Regis & Kelly. Anderson Cooper is guest hosting this week, and during yesterday's show he took the opportunity to review
Living Lohan, the E! reality show that stars everyone in the Lohan family not named Lindsay. This isn't some "oh, I don't bother with that show because it looks stupid" brush off, Cooper really goes after the people in the show, calling them "horrific" and saying that Ali Lohan "is 14 but looks 60...but I say that with concern and love."

You've heard of Ryan Seacrest, right? Well, one of the most reliable news source in the world,
The Globe, tells us now that the folks behind
Live are courting
Ryan Seacrest to replace Regis Philbin on their morning staple. It makes perfect sense. Consider that Regis, who turns 176 this year, has racked up more hours on television than anyone in history, but now has announced he'll be cutting back his television work to three days a week. Then we have Ryan, who can be seen and heard everywhere from his work on E! to
American Idol to
New Year's Rockin' Eve to his radio show to
American Top 40. Maybe he'd give up his morning radio gig for a morning TV gig. Or maybe record one during the commercial breaks of the other.
I almost missed this story, though, because that same issue of
The Globe promised to show me how to win the Lottery and I'm busy spending all the money I'm gonna win! So for now, we'll say the rumor's unsubstantiated but if the
Weekly World News or
The Onion picks it up, then it's official!

Everyone knew that
Regis Philbin is the king, now he'll have some extra hardware to prove it. Like a
Lifetime Achievement Award from The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. At the upcoming 35th annual Daytime Emmy Awards, June 20 at Hollywood's Kodak Theater, NATAS will present the special honor to Regis, host of
Live With Regis and Kelly, during the primetime ABC broadcast. There will be a salute to Regis, no doubt including
Kelly Ripa and/or Kathie Lee Gifford, his daytime co-hosts over the years, but the details haven't been announced yet.

If you tuned into Live with Regis & Kelly this morning expecting to see Ringo Starr perform his new single, then you were probably disappointed. He walked off the set before the show started.
Starr thought he was going to be able to perform the entire "Liverpool 8" song without editing (talk shows often need a shorter version of the song to fit their time schedule). He actually tried to cut the 4 minute, 15 second song down to the required 2 minute, 30 seconds, but found that he couldn't do it and still have the song be worth hearing, so he decided not to appear on the show at all.

Jimmy Kimmel not only got two paychecks for his twin hosting duties last week, he also set an official world record.
Kimmel filled in for Regis Philbin on Live with Regis & Kelly every day, and when he was done he jumped on a plane (private from ABC, but still) and hosted his late night talk show in Los Angeles. The Guinness Book of World Records has officially named him a world record holder, saying that the 22406 miles he commuted during the week are a record for the Furthest Distance Commuted In One Working Week.

Bicoastal, that is. Late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel will be one busy guy next week: he's going to host two different shows on two different coasts.
Kimmel will be filling in for Reege on Live with Regis & Kelly the week of October 22 (Philbin will be on vacation), and then he's going to jump on a plane and go to Los Angeles tape his show (side note: I wish they'd get rid of the "live" in the title since it's not done that way anymore). Then he'll come back to New York to host Regis & Kelly the next morning.

Yesterday we told you about Kathie Lee Gifford making her first appearance on Live with Regis & Kelly next month, and now she is revealing for the first time why she left the show in the first place.
She left in 2000 because her dad was dying. Gifford says she had an "epiphany" while guest-hosting David Letterman's show when he had heart surgery. She realized that she wanted to be with her dad and be with family without having cameras in her face and having to talk about it on the show all the time.

Claudia Cohen: She was one of the more famous gossip columnists, and had a regular spot on both Live with Regis and Kathie Lee and Live with Regis and Kelly, as well guest spots on Curb Your Enthusiasm and ESPN. She got her start writing for The New York Post also wrote the "I, Claudia" column for The New York Daily News. Cohen died last Saturday of complications from stomach cancer that was first diagnosed six years ago.

I haven't watched Live with Regis & Kelly in a while, but I tuned in today because it was Regis' first appearance on the show since heart surgery weeks ago and David Letterman was going to be the first guest. Throughout the entire show, Kelly kept saying that they had an incredible surprise for Regis. I even think she said that we should get our recording devices ready. Was Kathie Lee Gifford going to make an appearance? Was the entire Notre Dame football team going to carry Regis on their shoulders?

Are you going to sit there and tell me that you've been watching
Dancing with the Stars just for the dancing and expect me to believe it? It seems like the entire country is waiting for Heather Mills' leg to come flying off into the audience. It seems like that day is almost upon us.
If that day ever comes, it won't be an accident, but a calculated, manipulated piece of choreography.
Mills' performance last night serves as a taste of things to come. Mills
danced an almost perfect number and, for some reason, felt the need to stage a mistake and choreograph a fall. Her partner also choreographed a caring response to her fall. I would have an easier time believing this blunder if she looked genuinely mortified.
In other TV celebrity body part news, Regis Philbin is recovering after his bypass. He called into
Live! With Regis and Kelly yesterday and admitted some interesting things about his love life.

Regis Philbin, the iron man of daytime television and entertainment in general, looks to be on the mend after having triple-bypass surgery last month. The New York Post reports that not only is he walking again, but he's actually taking shopping trips with wife Joy, and told reporters that he was feeling well.
Originally he was supposed to be out for five weeks, but it's possible he could be back a little earlier than that (though it's already been three weeks, so I doubt he'll be back until the five weeks are up). He didn't ask me, but Regis? Take your time coming back. We know you're in great shape and a workhorse and all that, but really, you're 75 years old and just had major surgery. You don't need to be all excited listening to Kelly's stories about her kids and all those screaming fans.
On Monday, Martin Short will be the guest host on Live with Regis & Kelly, and then Pat Sajak takes over for the rest of the week. The following week, Jeff Probst is the guest host.
