Some fans of certain NBC shows are going to be irritated, and some fans of certain other NBC shows are going to be very happy. Which is pretty much par for the course with NBC anyway.
The Peacock Network has announced that
for the month of January,
Chuck, Life, and Heroes will not be seen. They'll be back in February. So you're wondering, what's going to replace these shows for the month? Some exciting new action show? A searing drama? A laugh-out-loud comedy?
Well...no.

Everything about the new
Knight Rider is about to change.
Well, OK, almost everything. It's not like they're going to get rid of the car and change the show to a musical/variety hour featuring dancers and puppets. But they are
getting rid of three of the stars of the show and changing the plot around to be more like the old version of the show.
Stars Bruce Davison, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, and Yancey Arias will no longer be on the show after the first 13 episodes. Also, the producers are getting rid of the stories where our hero fights professional bad guys and instead goes around and helps everyday Joes (plumbers and otherwise). Supposedly this will bring the show more in line with the other dramas on the NBC Wednesday lineup,
Life and
Law and Order. Though I don't think either of those shows feature a talking car.
The cringe-inducing piece of news is that they plan to do more "stunt-casting." Big name guest stars can be OK, but it's odd to announce "yes, now we are going to do more stunt-casting."
If they really want to make the show more like the old one they should bring back William Daniels.

"What's this stuff?"
"Some TV show...supposed to be good for ya."
"Did you try it?"
"I'm not gonna try it, you try it."
"I'm not gonna try it."
"Hey, let's get Mikey...""Yeah."
"He won't watch it...he hates everything!"We give a lot of depressing news here at TV Squad. News about shows being canceled, shows put on hiatus, shows delayed, episode orders on shows cut, shows moved to a bad time slot, characters killed off of shows, etc. So it's good when we actually have some good news about a show, especially one that isn't a huge hit.
NBC has given a full season order to Life, the quirky detective show that seems to be on a different night each week. It started the season on Mondays at 10, and we've seen it on both Fridays and Wednesdays. But the Peacock Network seems to have faith in the show and wants a full 22 from Charlie Crews and crew.
This is good news. One, the show isn't a reality show. And two, it's a good show.

Does
the return of Law and Order to the weekly NBC lineup strike a "welcome back" chord, or does it mean that the Peacock needs a boost in the ratings from a tried and true player? I think it's the latter, because just weeks into the new season, NBC is floundering in the Nielsens, prompting a change in the schedule.
First,
Law and Order is returning this week. On Wednesday, October 29, NBC presents what could be called their crime-time line up --
Knight Rider at 8,
Life at 9, and
Law and Order at 10.
Clearly, with
the pick up earlier this week for Knight Rider, NBC is committed to the show despite the weak ratings. Presenting this solid Wednesday block of cop shows will hopefully translate into better Nielsen numbers.

If you've been thinking that the new TV season isn't exciting, you're not alone. Some top TV critics have been thinking the same thing.
Time's James Poniewozik calls it "The Ratings Drought" and thinks that viewers didn't want to go back to watching the old shows after the writers strike, they wanted something new. Tim Goodman over at
The San Francisco Chronicle says that the ratings for returning shows and new ones show a real disinterest from TV fans.
Chuck,
Heroes, and
Life (all NBC shows) have seen big drops, and ABC's
Pushing Daisies is even being beaten by...well, I'm let Goodman say it:

You know the one I'm talking about. After the writers strike ended last year in February, most of the networks made the interesting decision to just go ahead and shelve most of their freshmen series for the season, even if they'd picked up their "back nine" orders. Instead, they thought they'd launch the shows to big fanfare this fall, almost as if they were new again. Unfortunately, it looks like this plan backfired on them tremendously.
Across the board, those
sophomore series that went on hiatus for more than six months are way down in the ratings. Apparently, absence doesn't make the heart grow fonder when it comes to the television landscape. It makes the instant gratification generation forget you existed. And stop caring.

We really do live in a very different television landscape.
NBC has decided to put five of its shows online a week before they even premiere on TV, to build buzz. The network has decided to use
Hulu to show the first episodes of new show
Knight Rider and returning shows
30 Rock,
Lipstick Jungle,
Life, and
Chuck.
Of course, putting episodes online is nothing new. All of the networks do it (sometimes they even "leak" the shows themselves to create buzz), but this seems to be a true attempt by NBC (which needs the help) to change the way they schedule, promote, and debut shows, a change in the way they program.
