It seems Jeffrey Ross already has the line of the night for Sunday's Roast of Larry the Cable Guy (Comedy Central, 10 PM), which isn't surprising, because he's a longtime Friars Club member. In the trailer, Ross slams, "This is ridiculous, he's not even a real person! Why don't we just roast Dora the Explorer or Popeye the Sailor Man?"
Fictional character he may be, Mr. The Cable Guy has attracted Jeff Foxworthy, Warren Sapp, Toby Keith, Gary Busey, Maureen McCormick, fellow comic Reno Collier, and Roast regulars like Ross, Greg Giraldo, and Nick DiPaolo. "Queen of Mean" Lisa Lampanelli will serve as the first female Roastmaster for the Comedy Central series (the Friars, originators of the roast, have only had a couple of female Roastmasters -- Susie Essman did the Smothers Brothers and Joy Behar did Danny Aiello).

Ah, the celebrity roast. Comedy Central resurrected the tried and true comedian ass-kiss off with hilarious specials featuring Denis Leary, Flavor Flav, Bob Saget and William #*$&$ing Shatner. Then came the capper: a roast of music legend Willie Nelson. It was a shift in evolution so great, it could have made Charles Darwin buy into the theory of intelligent design.
Then the network caused a global groan so loud that it shifted the tectonic plates when they announced that Nelson had to cancel and they would replace him
with Larry the Cable Guy.
It's such an obvious and safe choice that might be a good recipe for ratings, but it's a sure fire recipe for boring. Here are the iconic stars who would have made much better kindling for a white hot comedy roast.

Comedy Central's roasts were one of the few things the network used to do right post-
South Park. They didn't go for the big names. They went for the funniest names, the people who lended themselves to the kind of mean-spirited mockery that let comics be honest but also let the audience know they were just having fun.
This time around, it's hard to see how any self-respecting comic that makes fun of Larry the Cable Guy will not let the audience know they are just joking.
Comedy Central announced that the hunting cap-wearing, sleeveless shirt-wearing, catchphrase-drilling stand-up comic will be the next "celebrity" to take the hot seat in their annual roast.

(S05E15) After better than a month off, finally a new episode of
Family Guy. I'm not sure I understand the thinking behind the scheduling of the show this year, but the list of behaviors from the networks that I don't understand is a long one. So, we'll take what we can get. Whatever the reasoning, it was nice to have the Griffins back with a fresh adventure.
I think I probably came into this one with my expectations set a little high. Those previews that revealed the family packing up and taking a trip put the thought in the back of my mind that this could be one of those classic episodes. It called to mind the season three episode "To Love and Die in Dixie." Unfortunately, now having seen it, it wasn't a classic.

Did anyone see
the profile of Larry the Cable Guy on
60 Minutes last week? It was pretty much a puff piece, talking about how Larry became the biggest stand-up comedian on the face of the planet despite the fact that his comedy isn't exactly in that "make you think" category that, say, Doug Stanhope or Dave Attell might be in. Heck, even Dane Cook's comedy seems sophisticated compared to Larry's. But Larry's successful because he tells goofy jokes that appeal to a wide range of people. He's not my cup of tea, but I've laughed at a few of his jokes. Despite his "bumpkin" image, I can definitely see how so many people like the guy.
Anyone who watched the report probably noticed that Dan Whitney, who created the Larry persona a number of years ago with the help of
Blue Collar Comedy producer J.P. Williams, didn't quite have the same severe southern accent that he does on stage. Makes sense; Larry's a character and the interview was with Dan, not Larry. But in his pre-Larry days, Whitney didn't have an accent at all. How do I know this? Because of clips like the one after the jump, that shows what Whitney's stand-up routine was like before Larry came into his life.

Larry the Cable Guy cannot be stopped. He's not only one of the most successful stand-up comedians around these days, he's one of the four-headed comedy monster known as the "Blue Collar Comedy" team, and he played a tow truck in the Pixar movie
Cars. Now, he's going to have his own cartoon.
According to
The Hollywood Reporter, Comedy Central
has picked up an animated pilot that Larry co-created and co-wrote with Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow. He will provide the voice of the main character, the co-owner of a cable station that has a lot of wacky programming ideas. In true cliched sitcom fashion, the other owner is a classy woman who completely disagrees with the programming choices Larry's character makes.
