Doesn't it seem like Larry King is aging at about five times the normal rate? I keep thinking he must be in his 90s, but in reality, he's only 74. And it looks like he'll be around a while.
According to a TVNewser report,
CNN and King have agreed on a contract that will keep the suspender-clad one with the network through June 2011. For the record, he'll be 77 -- but he'll probably seem like he's 153.
A recent
New York Times story speculated that ratings-challenged
CBS Evening News anchor
Katie Couric might be eyeing King's CNN slot. "Couric discussed several things she might do if she left the anchor post, according to the executives, including a daily talk show to be syndicated by CBS, or replacing Larry King in a prime-time position on CNN," notes the Times story. Not so, a CNN spokesperson told TVNewser. "Larry is the best there is. He'll be here for a long time."

So, AOL TV did a poll about
America's favorite talk show hosts and 1.3 million people made their feelings known. Interesting results. I didn't agree with some of them, like who I like waking up with. Diane Sawyer was the top choice, but I'd go for the second place finisher, Matt Lauer. As for whom to go to bed with -- TV talk show wise, that is -- I can't believe most of the people chose Jay Leno. Is he really that popular? I prefer David Letterman; I'm a sucker for the Top Ten lists.

Like a lot of writers, I have an idea folder (it's manila, but I have it covered in puffy rainbow and unicorn stickers, so it's
beautiful). As each week progresses, I jot down all my ideas -- for columns, for stand-up bits, for ransom notes -- and at the end of that week, I take stock of my creative output.
This week, I noticed that there were a lot of ideas that I wanted to share, but that weren't quite big enough for a full
TV 101 column. I attached them to the end of my last column in a section called "Dribs and Drabs." It was a good thought, except that it took an already bloated piece (my writing makes the Unabomber's manifesto look like a dream of concise thought) and puffed it up into a 3000 word monstrosity. My editor suggested I break up the Dribs and Drabs section into its own piece, and that, dear readers, is what I did. Dribs and Drabs, after the jump...

Sure, sure, The Closer has received many accolades during its three seasons on the air, and star Kyra Sedgwick has won and been nominated for several awards. However, can you really say that the show has made it into the television pantheon? Well, now that Larry King is appearing you can definitely shout out a resounding 'YES'.
It's true, folks. Larry will guest-star on the season finale of The Closer, which will air September 10th on TNT.

Yes, more news about Isaiah Washington! As if we had not published enough articles about him yet (just look at the amount of links in this article alone).
Michael Ausiello from TV Guide reports that the ex-
Grey's Anatomy actor will sit down for a chat with CNN's Larry King on
Larry King Live on Monday, July 2. This will be the actor's first TV interview since being fired.
Expect the interview to cover the too much publicized incidents with
T.R. Knight and
Patrick Dempsey as well as what happened at the
Golden Globes,
the rehab, the PSA, the fact that Washington
got fired, that
potential law suit against ABC and the media frenzy!

I was going to wait until this weekend to post this Larry King clip, but I have a feeling that it may be gone before the week is up. Most likely due to the fact that Larry himself will probably ask to have it taken down because he looks like such a whiner.
In this YouTube video, which can be seen after the jump, Larry has a little issue with CNN colleague Anderson Cooper. It seems that Anderson and his panel of presidential candidate debate experts are getting more time than Larry's panel is. Basically, he'd like to know why. Most likely because Cooper is a bit easier on the eyes than the very tired Larry. That, and the fact that Anderson doesn't normally ask his panelists what their favorite New York City deli is.

1. How much air time should TV news give to Barbaro dying? Um, how about a quick mention during sports and that's it? In the grand scheme of things, it's really not that important. One of the Boston news anchors said that the horse was "a great athlete" twice within five minutes. The horse's death was not only talked about over and over and over and over again on the major networks and all the 24 hour news channels, ABC
led their nightly newscast with it. What, nothing happening in Iraq on in Washington? And they say Katie is doing fluff.

Or, a better question would be: are you watching any television? Christmas Day can be a busy time, what with gifts being opened, dinners being cooked (and eaten) and annoying relatives to entertain (this does not pertain to Joel, who is coming down to visit today). For others, though, Christmas ends at the last present that's unwrapped, which can lead to a very long, boring day.
So, if you can't take the kids, the wife, or the annoying relatives (once again, not Joel, I swear) you can tune into the annual broadcast of the Walt Disney World Christmas Parade (filmed at the beginning of December) hosted by Regis Philbin, Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest and featuring Beyonce, the cast of High School Musical and the Doodlebops. If that's too much Christmas then you may want to tune into CNN for a, ready, Larry King Live marathon. Other non-Christmas marathons are Crossing Jordan on A&E, My Super Sweet 16 on MTV (they played music videos once, didn't they?), In Living Color on BET, and Super Millionaire on GSN.
Of course, if you are still in the holiday spirit (or, in the holiday spirits, if you know what I mean) TBS airs their annual 24-hour marathon of the classic holiday movie A Christmas Story, while networks like Hallmark and Lifetime will air a variety of made-for-TV holiday movies. Then again, if none of this is of interest you can always pop in a DVD from the complete The West Wing set that you received.
Oh, and Joel, dinner is at 2:00 pm.

The TV Squad team has made their picks for the top quotes of the week from TV:
"Has your pit bull ever killed anyone?" - Larry King, to guest Rachael Ray.
- "You make the legal system into a game to be played for fun and profit."
"You make that seem like a bad thing ..." - D.A. Devlin to Stark, on Shark.
- "Did you ask [the victim] who shot him?"
Uniformed officer: "Yeah. He said it was a guy with a gun." - Detective Bunk on The Wire, questioning first officer on a crime scene.
- "Never have I had to step over dead bodies to get my hair done!" - Rose's friend, on Brotherhood after the pair pass the scene of police investigating a street shooting.
- "I'm sure you were great, but it was the National Anthem, they were standing already." - Matt, about his ex-girlfriend Harriet saying she got a standing ovation when she sang before a Dodgers game, on Studio 60.

Just finished watching
Larry King
Live, who had the first interview with author James Frey since the controversy over the truthfulness (or
"truthiness," as Colbert would say) of some of the facts in his memoir
A Million Little Pieces.
During the interview, Frey kept responding to Larry's queries over
The Smoking Gun's exposé -- it revealed
that some of the book's details about his criminal past were highly exaggerated -- by saying that it was a very
small part of a huge book. People are not concentrating on the meat of the book, said Frey, which takes place in a
rehab clinic. Frey went on to explain that memoirs generally have embellishments, composite characters, and time
compressions, and that it's a subjective story about the author's life, so it's hard to judge it on the facts.

Bob Costas, who was recently chosen as a substitute for Larry King's long-running CNN program, politely refused to appear on Thursday's show largely dedicated to the Natalee Holloway case. All in all, the disagreement was amiable and neither side seems to be harboring any kind of animosity. That's all fine and good, but it doesn't make for very compelling news. I would have much preferred a Bob Novak-style explosion in which Costas grabs King's trademark microphone, hurls it at the camera, and crashes through the backdrop. That's TV, my friends.
