KieferSutherland-related stories

I wasn't particularly impressed with season seven of
24, partly because I really want Jack Bauer to be
the kick-ass character he used to be, rather than the sickly guy struggling to survive (well, he's always been struggling, but in more of a kick-ass way).
The show took some heat for some of the earlier implausible plotlines (Really, Jack? You escape from the Secret Service guys and steal a helicopter to save the President? And say what? You spring back to life after being "dead" to find the bombs and save the world?), but that's what I loved about the show.
But could the Jack Bauer era be coming to an end? Kiefer Sutherland recently told
Contact Music that
he fears his character might be killed off.

Stephen Root has had an incredibly prolific career. He may not be a headliner, but you always remember him as something that has influenced pop culture (usually
NewsRadio or the movie
Office Space). Now he will be adding to his long acting resumé by
appearing on the Fox series 24 as a parole officer.
The wonderful thing about Root is how he can play a multitude of characters. To use the previous examples, his character on
Office Space, Milton Waddams, is nothing like his character on
NewsRadio, Jimmy James. Neither of them are like his character from True Blood, Eddie. Well, you get the idea.
I'm also impressed with his ability to go from comedy to drama and back while mastering both types of performance. Yes, I'm a Stephen Root fan.
This is an incredible gain for
24. I may tune in just to see what sort of character he'll be playing in this one.

24 can be

Katee Sackhoff, known mostly as the female Starbuck in the revamped version of
Battlestar Galactica will be joining Jack Bauer to fight terrorists in the next season of
24.
I met Ms. Sackhoff once and she was quite nice, so I'm glad she's found another gig. It even makes sense that she's been cast, since
24 is very much like
Battlestar Galactica but with less of a science fiction vibe (particularly if you substitute "Cylon" for "double-agent"). There is likely a lot of crossover appeal.
She is set to play a character named Dana Walsh, a CTU data analyst. Secretly I'm hoping she won't be stuck behind a desk decrypting computer files or anything boring like that and we'll be able to see her take down a terrorist or two (or whomever the enemy is next season).
This is a good casting choice and almost makes up for the show's casting of Freddie Prinze, Jr.

Freddie Prinze Jr.
will be joining the cast of 24 for the eighth season as a recently-returned marine and Jack Bauer-wannabe named Davis Cole. I think this is an example of Fox either wanting to expand or continue the franchise without Kiefer Sutherland.
Think about it. Sutherland is only getting older. He can't be Jack Bauer forever. Prinze is a younger, recognizable face (much as all of us want to forget the
Scooby Doo movie franchise). This could be the set-up for one of three things: the retirement of Jack Bauer from
24, a spin-off series, or an opportunity to have more negotiating power for Kiefer Sutherland's next contract renewal. It could even be a combination of the three.
So the question to ask is: could the series continue without Jack Bauer, or would that be the beginning of the end? Since the name of the show is
24 and not
Jack Bauer, I would think so.

Jimmy Fallon has put himself in an interesting position. Not that kind, sickos.
Next week, he welcomes
24 star Kiefer Sutherland to the
Late Night studios in the wake of his latest assault charge in which he allegedly
head-butted a fashion designer outside of a night club. I'm calling it "Butt-Gate" because I won't get that opportunity again until Jennifer Lopez and Shakira get into a fist fight.
The question for Fallon is how hard will he interview Sutherland on this latest incident that could land him in jail on
a probation violation. This could be a defining moment for Fallon as a late night host. Granted, he's not interviewing the head of the Saudi Royal Family or even the head of the Hilton family, but it could either give him and his show some juice or take some away.

What year was the CTU created? Who played President Palmer in Season Five? Who killed Teri Bauer at the end of Season One?
These questions and more are featured in a
24 quiz written by our illustrious leader Joel for
Parade.com. I thought I knew
24 pretty well, but Joel managed to throw in a few trick questions that led me astray. Or then again, maybe I just don't know
24 as well as I thought I did. Nah, I think it's the trick questions.
Also featured on Parade.com is a nice little
Q&A with Kiefer Sutherland, in which he talks about the possibility of a
24 movie, Barack Obama becoming President, and why he cried buckets over
Bambi.
But first, take
the quiz and report back on how you did. I'm not even going to admit my pathetic score. It's Joel's trick questions - yeah, that's it.

This doesn't come as a surprise, does it?
NBC has ordered an 11th season of Law & Order: SVU. It isn't a surprise because of all the shows on NBC's roster – not including
ER, which just had a celebrated swan song – are struggling in the ratings.
Law & Order SVU is the lone exception, still drawing nearly 10 million viewers and at least keeping NBC challenging in the Tuesday night ratings.
It's not as strong as it once was, but what show is on NBC? It would have been network hari-kari to let
SVU hit the road.

When
William Petersen left
CSI, he left a very, very cushy job. He was making a cool $600,000 per episode, more than
Kiefer Sutherland was getting for
24, but not quite as much as
Charlie Sheen was taking home for
Two and a Half Men ($825,000 per show).
Well,
CSI decided not to skimp when they cast Laurence Fishburne to assume the star spot on the crime drama.
Fishburne is earning more than $14 million for this season of
CSI. (So much for a recession!)

It's not you, Jack. It's me ... or maybe it's you. Hey, they brought it up by putting Jack in front of a Senate subcommittee in the first place for his methodology, and then partnering him with an FBI agent who's not comfortable with his aggressive tactics. It's just interesting to me as a long-time faithful that I find myself viewing Jack differently, too. Maybe it's because he skipped a year, but he just comes across as more extreme to me than in the past. But, as I said, it could be me. Maybe Jack is the picture of consistency and I've changed.
When Jack asks for something, if there's any resistance he immediately screams "
Now!" or repeats the question in a roar. When Renee or anyone second guesses any of his suggestions he tells them that they're out of options and that they don't have time to do anything but his idea. Don't get me wrong, this season is one of the most exciting yet, but you have to wonder. Do we really need someone like Jack Bauer running around torturing people and sending innocent girls to their deaths to bring in the bad guy? Is it worth it?

According to EW's Michael Ausiello, Kim Bauer will be reunited with Daddy Dearest come 2009.
That's right, Elisha Cuthbert has signed a contract to reappear on FOX's 24 this upcoming season. When we last saw her during the fifth season she was being whisked away from Los Angeles by her much older boyfriend, Barry.
She's not expected to return until toward the end of the upcoming seventh season and while she won't be "with" Barry, she will be with a child. Or at least have a child. I'll bet she didn't even tell Jack that he was a grandfather. In fact, is it a sign that
24 is getting a little long in the tooth that our action hero is a grandfather now?

Fox's
24 is taking a break from filming so producers can rethink the storylines for the upcoming season. The two-hour special for November is still in the can and shouldn't be affected by this.
This could be an example of analysis paralysis. Due to the writers' strike, the show was not broadcast at all last season. They had a year's break to think it through. They're having second thoughts about the storyline this late in the game? Considering the wait that fans have already had to go through (though no fault of the producers), this better be a kick-ass season.
Of course, the show isn't being broadcast until January and they already have plenty of material ready that wasn't broadcast due to the aforementioned strike. There is ample time to make whatever changes they need and have it ready for broadcast.
I do wonder what sort of enemy Jack Bauer will be fighting in the next season. I'm hoping for
Cobra Commander from the upcoming G.I. Joe movie.

On USA's spy-action-comedy series
Burn Notice, there are great actors all around. Recently, I had the chance to spend a day on the set of
Burn Notice (more on that next week!), and share in round-table interviews with the stars of the show.
Here's one of those wonderful actors, the irreverent and brilliant Bruce Campbell. As Sam, Jeffrey's old friend -- and sometime nemesis -- from the spy wars, Campbell is having a ball filming in South Florida and stealing scenes like nobody's business. Oh, and he smells good, just like
Old Spice.
Q: What is the character of Sam about?
Bruce Campbell: He's about 50. No, he's like the other characters in the show, damaged goods, which is why I like him.

Oscar-winner
Jon Voight, father of a certain actress called Angelina Jolie, will return to the small screen this fall. The actor, who recently appeared in movies such as
National Treasure and
Transformers, was cast in an important role on FOX's hit series
24.
The 69-year-old actor may be best known for his movies but he is no stranger to TV. He appeared in a handful of made-for-TV movies, in mini-series such as the 1993
Return to Lonesome Dove in which he played lead character Capt. Woodrow F. Call, and in series like
Gunsmoke for example.

In early March, FOX announced that a
24 two-hour Season 7 prequel would air this fall. At that time, not much was known about this special event expect that the action would take place after the Season 6 finale and before the
Season 7 premiere. Eventually, we got wind that
Jack Bauer would be heading to Africa even if
the idea was scrapped in September because of production cost.
Today,
FOX confirmed that Jack Bauer would battle an international crisis in South Africa in the two-hour prequel set to air on Sunday, November 23 at 8 p.m.
