I was trying to figure out what show to spotlight for the second "Gone Too Soon" column. As a general rule, I want to give a show a few years off the air before I delve into it. That gives the creators and producers a chance to try and continue the story, if they're interested in doing so, and it gives the actors a chance to move on. Then I read the news that they're going to
adapt The Time Traveler's Wife to television, and it hit me.
A man disappearing from his wife to travel through time, and struggling to fix his home life as he went along? That sounded awfully familiar, and to a lot of you, as well, if your comments are any indication. So even though
Journeyman's finale aired less than two years ago, it's time we honored it for the great show it was ... a show, unfortunately, about two years ahead of its time.

Lead characters are extremely important for TV series, as they are the basis of the shows' storylines. However, to make said lead characters shine and make the storylines interesting, supporting characters must be introduced. Sometimes, those characters have a major impact on a series and even end up becoming leads. Just see how Ben Linus on
Lost was set to appear in a few episodes, but ended up being so helpful to the storyline and loved (or hated) by the fans that he became an integral part of the series and is now a major player on the show.
That compelled me to make a list of new supporting characters who helped make their series better this season. Since my list only has 10 items and because I don't watch all current TV series, I will have missed tons of supporting characters, so feel free to add to the list by commenting below. However, note that I restricted my list to supporting characters that were introduced THIS season. So the Ben Linuses of the TV world are not on the list.

...Nine foreign AmericansWith all of the starry-eyed, out-of-work Midwesterners who litter Sunset Blvd., one would assume that our television landscape would be similarly populated with corn-fed blonds. You would, however, be wrong. In fact, there are a ton of non-Americans who have come to Hollywood to take all of our primetime show-starring jobs.

It's that time of year again -- time to shop 'til you drop, bake until you sweat, eat until you bloat, and take stock in what you are thankful for, in your life and of course, on television.
You might think that in this season of less-than-stellar television, it would be hard to find TV-related things to be thankful for; after all, with lackluster new shows and all of your favorites getting canceled left and right, things do seem bleak.
But my glass is half full, and I still garner joy from my nightly boob tube sessions, my TV on DVD collection, and the time I haven't spent watching TV. I am thankful ...

Hahn is out and
Hunt is in! An ABC representative confirmed to
People that Scottish actor Kevin McKidd, who recently starred in the canceled-too-soon
Journeyman, has been upped to series regular on
Grey's Anatomy.
When it was announced that
McKidd was in talks to appear on
Grey's Anatomy this fall as Major Owen Hunt, a military doctor, it was also mentioned that the stint was to be a recurring one that could be upped to a regular one if the audience responded well to the character.
Looks like the audience will get more screen time for McMajor!

I wish I could tell you that those plans included a television mini-series or at least a small screen film, but alas series creator Kevin Falls has moved on. In fact, his new series featuring a womanizer trapped in a woman's body, is currently coming together for FOX, so at least he's sticking with the "different." He did, however, take some time out to chat it up with
AICN about the bigger plans for Journeyman.
This was a show that was hugely under-appreciated by the mainstream, and almost dismissed out of the gate as a
Quantum Leap derivative by many of the sci-fi crowd. The show was so much more. There was such a heart of tragedy at the core of protagonist Dan Vasser's abrupt rips through time. Unlike
QL's Sam Beckett, Vasser is literally torn from his life no matter what he is doing, body and spirit, and hurtled through the timestream. Then add all that we learned about his first love Livia and there's just so much pain in the show, which makes for great dramatic television.

Like many people, I was
miffed that Journeyman wasn't picked up for another season. But maybe we'll get our fix of
Kevin McKidd at Seattle Grace next year.
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the Scottish actor, who blew (some of) us away as the time-traveling journalist Dan Vasser on
Journeyman, is in talks to join the cast of
Grey's Anatomy. The rumor is that McKidd would play a doctor who scrubs in at the hospital after a stint in Iraq.

There were plenty of choices for
The Arrested Development Award, a.k.a. The Show Least Deserving of Cancellation Award. Among them,
Las Vegas,
New Amsterdam,
Miss Guided,
Aliens in America, and
Women's Murder Club.
The Readers Choice Award goes to
Moonlight, the vampire-themed crime-drama-romance that amassed an insane amount of fans during its short run. And it still might come back on another network, so we'll keep our collective fingers crossed on that.
The TV Squadders' pick is
Journeyman. Here's why:
1. Time-traveling is cool. The idea of time-travel is always intriguing, as evidenced by other shows like
Quantum Leap and
Sliders. What's cool about
Journeyman is that Dan Vasser, played by
Kevin McKidd, is just a normal guy who could be any one of us. At first, he hates the time-traveling. It interrupts his life and causes undue stress, both at home and work. But later, when given the opportunity to make it stop, he chooses to keep time-traveling. He knows he's been chosen for a reason, and feels it's his calling to help people right the wrongs of history. Never mind that every episode made me wonder how much of history he changed by leaping into the past. I can only imagine that even the smallest of events might drastically alter the space-time continuum.

What could be the last (gulp!) episode ever of NBC's time-traveling series aired a few hours ago and I'm still in denial that this could be the last we saw of Dan Vasser. At least the creator and writers got the hint that this could be the final episode ever soon enough to make it a potential series finale. Even if we didn't get answers to all our questions (back to that after the jump), we at least got some closure.

Journeyman may get canceled when it's giving us fantastic episodes. After
a nice Christmas-themed episode last week, we now move one step closer to what may end up being the series finale. NBC will air the last completed episode, aka episode 13, this Wednesday at 10 p.m.
"The Hanged Man" not only had Dan face off a major change in his present time after leaving 2007 technology in the past but he also learned what Livia and he share in common besides being travelers.

Kristin from E! Online reports that sources revealed that
Journeyman is officially done. That news won't surprise many fans because the cancellation ax has been hovering over the show for a few weeks now. We were first made aware of the possibility that Dan Vasser's travels through time would probably come to a premature stop
about two weeks ago.

(S01E11) "I'm not my father." - DanAfter episodes like this one, it's difficult to understand why people aren't watching
Journeyman. It looked like the writers knew the
cancellation ax was hovering above their heads when they wrote this week's episode because it was a payoff for loyal viewers and paved the way for episode 13, to possibly serve as a series finale.
Not only was Frank (played by
The 4400's Joel Gretsch) back and Jack getting more likable this week, but we saw Livia in her "present" time and Dan's actions have once again an impact on his family and friends. What more can we want for this Christmas-themed episode? Okay, maybe answers on why Dan and Livia travels and how, but that was probably a gift that was too big to put under our
Festivus pole!

Ain't It Cool News reveals that
Journeyman's 12th episode (that is if you count the pilot as 1.00 and not 1.01) will air after all. If you've been following the show's behind-the-scenes drama, you know that there are
talks of cancellation due to so-so ratings, and that this twelfth episode could very well be the series' final episode (13 episodes were ordered at first; NBC later ordered three more scripts but, because of the strike, episode 12 (episode 13 for us fans) was the last one completed).

(S01E10) So what, trying to get a kidnapper behind bars gets me shot? Who in the hell are we working for? - Dan Vasser
His line may as well have been, "So what, we have an interesting eight episodes capped off by an excellent ninth and tenth show, only to get hit with
rumors of being canceled after this season? Who in the hell are we working for?"
That would be NBC Danny boy, and I'm none two thrilled that Journeyman probably won't be showing up on the schedule when spring rolls around.

(S01E09) Dan's been traveling a lot lately...- Katie Vasser
And the understatement of the year award goes to, Katie Vasser!
Watching the show, it seems like Dan makes multiple trips through time over the course of a single day. He has to be gone 3-5 hours daily and from what I understand his trips are only going to start lasting longer and longer as the show moves along.
I'm actually quite amazed Katie has stuck around for this long. How could any relationship sustain this kind of disruption? The disappearing part is bad enough, but when you add in the fact that Dan repeatedly sees his ex-fiance during his journeys, it's even more amazing that Katie has stayed put this long. My wife would've gouged my eyeballs out and thrown another set of balls out the window of her car so she could repeatedly run over them.
