Returning favorites like Lost, Heroes, and Dexter were recognized by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films, as were newcomers Pushing Daisies and Journeyman.

With seven nominations, Lost is ahead of Dexter and Heroes, which received five and four nominations, respectively. Heroes was the big winner last year, taking home awards for Best Network Series as well as acting awards for Masi Oka and Hayden Panettiere. Both actors received nominations this year, along with co-star Greg Grunberg.

However, it was confirmed the cast and crew had time to shoot some scenes for episodes 12 and 13 (other sources say they had time to shoot part, if not all, of episodes 12 to 16!). TV Guide's Michael Ausiello reports that Tim Kring presented a new trailer at the Jules Verne Adventure Film Festival of Los Angeles, which includes some of those yet-to-air scenes.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Heroes: Powerless

Filed under: OpEd, Heroes, Episode Reviews

(S02E11) When Kristin offered up the chance to review the Fall (Season?) Finale of Heroes, I couldn't resist stepping in to help. While this episode lived up to a lot of the promises of the season, much like last season's finale, it may have been a little lighter on the action than you'd want. There are a lot of big changes for a lot of the characters and yes, the promised "hero" death. We get resolutions on the virus plot, the Sylar/Mya journey, Hiro's quest to stop Adam, the Bennet situation, and in the end, there's enough to entice us to come back for more. It's all here and let me tell you, if Kristin was yawning and checking her watch through the last episode, there wasn't time this week. This episode is absolutely jam-packed from start to finish. "Volume Two" wraps, and as with last year we get a teaser of Volume Three. But we'll get to all of that after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Heroes: Truth & Consequences

Filed under: OpEd, Heroes, Episode Reviews
(S02E10) For the second to last episode of the season, I found tonight's show a bit slow. It had it's cool parts--I even have dedicated a section to them at the bottom of the post--but I looked at my watch a lot throughout the episode.

Overall, I think Heroes has come a long way since the beginning of the season. I think many Heroes viewers are just spoiled from the novelty and plot twists of the first season so they are critical when stories/characters aren't up to snuff.

But, that said, I am looking forward to the season finale. As the ads keep saying, "It all comes down to this."

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Heroes: Cautionary Tales

Filed under: OpEd, Heroes, Episode Reviews

(S02E09) "You've gone native. Are you kidding me?" Noah Bennet to Mohinder Suresh.

Just when you thought Mohinder couldn't get any stupider, he goes and shoots Noah Bennet in the eye. He is really in too deep with this company. And lately, he is making Matt Parkman look like a genius. (Wait, did Parkman just make me say that? Dumb joke, I know.) More on this after the jump because it basically took up the whole episode.

But before I go through all the storylines for this week, let me just say that I was so relieved that those ridiculous mascara-plague twins were absent from this week's Heroes. And just so I don't get too excited about it, I put a picture of them in the post to remind me that they are still on the show. And, apparently, a lot is going to happen in the next three episodes as our favorite heroes have to save the world (and probably the cheerleader) again. From those scenes from next week's Heroes, it looks like there may be a stand-off coming between the two father-daughter pairs on the show (Noah/Claire & Bob/Elle). I can't wait to see that.

Some may disagree with me, but I thought this was a great episode. I know nothing really moved forward in the "present-day plot" so to speak, but we got a lot of much-needed answers about some of the key players on the show. And, most importantly, Peter Petrelli got his memory back. Brainless Peter was just annoying.

There were no black tears, no subtitles, and consequently, no dozing off on my part. The twins' storyline is this years version of the Nikki/Jessica snorefest that ensued most of last season. The less I have to see of it the better.

Unfortunately, we also received no further insight into what's going on in Gabriele's world. I was really hoping we'd get to see him make good on his promise to kill Alejandro.

Judging by some of the comments I've read in past recaps, I'm willing to bet a few of you completely agree with me on that point.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Heroes: The Line

Filed under: OpEd, Heroes, Episode Reviews

(S02E06) "There's a storm coming Dr. Suresh." --Bob

Is Bob heralding the return of season one's magic? Save the cheerleader. Save the world. Claire is a cheerleader again. New York is burning, destroyed, evacuated (or whatever) again. Now all we need is Sylar to get his powers back. I can only hope that the overarching plotline will take us in this direction. It's not that I want to see a repeat of season one. I just long for the overlapping stories. I like seeing the characters all together, supers cooperating to save the world. Even though I named Heroes as the best show of the year, I've been worried lately that season two might turn out to be an over-hyped, overdone disaster that will make me tire of it really quickly. I mean, they're adding cast members at an astonishing rate (Kristin Bell, Nichelle Nichols, David Anders, Stephen Tobolowsky, Janel Parrish, Jessica Collins). They're going to have a storyline in another time (Hiro), produced a spinoff mini-series to be directed by Kevin Smith, produced online stories and comics to keep fans entertained and well-fed and gone on a world tour to promote the show. It's really overwhelming, and I hope they're not doing too much, too soon.

The Boston Globe's Matthew Gilbert is worried too.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Set visits to The Closer, TMZ, Cold Case, Two and a Half Men, Brothers & Sisters - TCA report

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, The Closer, Heroes, Brothers and Sisters, TCA Press Tour, Awards
After 15 consecutive days of Mohammed (TV shows) coming to the mountain (the Beverly Hilton hotel), today the mountain (actually, the TCA membership) went to Mohammed. Two bus loads of TV critics boarded vehicles to hit five sound stages and the offices of TMZ.com.

First up was The Closer at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood. Kyra Sedgwick and other cast members of the TNT drama mixed and mingled on the show's squad room set. Most reporters hovered around Sedgwick to inquire about her Emmy nomination for Lead Actress in a Drama Series, the show's new season and husband Kevin Bacon.

Nick D'Agosto will join NBC's Heroes this fall as West, Claire's boyfriend. The show says he will have a "cool" super power. I don't know if that means the super power is interesting and neat, or if he can turn himself into a giant ice cube tray and make ice cubes for when the other heroes are hot and thirsty from fighting the bad guys.

D'Agosto has guest starred on several TV shows, including House, ER, Cold Case, Six Feet Under, Big Day, Without A Trace, and Boston Public.

NBC is streaming the entire season so far with "limited interruption" from various sponsors.

Heroes returns April 23rd.

Read | Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The man behind HRG on Heroes

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, NBC, Interviews, Heroes
Do we love or do we hate the horned rimmed glasses clad character of Mr. Bennet better known as HRG? On one hand he seems to have dedicated his life and career protecting his cheerleader daughter Claire, on the other he puts his family and others in jeopardy with his lying, manipulative memory zapping ways. Its hard for anyone who meets the actor who plays HRG to resist asking if he's a good or bad guy.

On the next episode of Heroes, airing Monday on NBC, Jack Coleman, the actor who portrays HRG, says that those questions will be answered as his character's motivations are revealed. Out of all the episodes he alludes to this one as his favorite, "I'll just say that at the end of episode 117, I will not tell you exactly what it is but its very emotional and stuck with me for a while."

Which makes everyone wonder: what on earth kind of superhero story line would bring a mostly stoic actor to an emotional blunder? Usually thats the kind of talk when someone is going to be written off a show, giving no hints to his character's demise he does admit, "There are some relatively profound changes heading toward HRG, but i don't know that they are going to continue [them] or what's going to happen into the next season."

Interesting.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Save the cheerleader but kill her music career

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, NBC, OpEd, Celebrities, Heroes

Why isn't it enough to just be a fast-rising television star on a popular series on a major network? Are our young up-and-coming thespians that much of an overachieving set that they can't just take their earnings and buy themselves a new car or hang out at Louis Vuitton? It seems young television starlets everywhere are giving a new meaning to the term "triple threat." The real threat being that we'll be surrounded by examples of their talents being spread too thin and have it simultaneously shoved up our noses in multiple places.

Move aside Hillary Duff. Hayden Panettiere wants some of that hoopla too, and the proof is in her new music video for the straight to DVD Disney's Cinderella III: A Twist in Time.

Between the meals each network serves the critics and the snacks the hotel sends up on a daily basis, I seem to just graze all day long (by the way, the Ritz-Carlton has one of the best $15 cheeseburgers I've ever had. Of course, anywhere else, the burger would be $8. Still good though).

Case in point: NBC provided candy bins for the critics, giving them a chance to create to-go bags of various sugary snacks. Through all the afternoon press conferences -- for The Apprentice, the Grease reality show, Andy Barker, PI, and Raines, I absent-mindedly grabbed from the bag because, to be honest, outside of those great Rosie digs by Donald Trump, not much went on (even the Andy Barker session wasn't all that interesting, despite the presence of Andy Richter and Conan O'Brien).

But the Heroes session that closed the afternoon? That one made me take notice.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
