South Park DVD won't have Rock Band tracks after all

South Park Season 11Remember when it was previously reported that the South Park Season 11 DVD set will have tracks for the XBox 360 video game Rock Band? Well, apparently they took it back, according to our sister site, XBox 360 Fanboy.

Xay de Matos from Fanboy speculates that the reason behind ditching the tracks is that they were never intended for Rock Band. Rather, they were intended for Guitar Hero (specifically Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock), the video game an entire episode in Season 11 is dedicated to. Apparently, the people in marketing didn't know the difference.

I don't understand the logic behind this decision. It's an excellent promotional possibility, so why wouldn't the makers of these video games be all over this like a fly on rotting food?

The final specs for the DVD set haven't been released, so it's possible some extra goodies will still be on it (Trey and Matt have historically at least done mini-commentaries for every episode). It's a case of wait and see.

Play Heroin Hero from South Park

Yeah... I've been there myself.Just in time for those of us dealing with the holiday blues comes "the ultimate first-person shooter": Heroin Hero. For those of you not familiar with the "Guitar Queer-o" episode of South Park, Heroin Hero is the game that Stan plays to get his mind off the pressure that he faces as one of the new rising stars of the game Guitar Hero. Your goal in the game is to catch the dragon, but the thing is... you can never catch the dragon.

I've played the game and I have to say, it's fun. It's something to do on the weekends when you're just chilling out with your friends, not addictive at all. I mean, sure, sometimes I'll play it before work (or sometimes during work) just to mellow out, but like, I can stop any time I want. In fact, I'm so sure I can stop, I'm going to stop writing this article right now so I can go play some more...

MTV may be eyeing a Rock Band TV show

MTVHarmonix brought us Guitar Hero and it was good. MTV bought Harmonix and promised more musical delights in the near future and now there is Rock Band. Where GH allowed you to rock the axe, RB expands to allow the entire "band." Peripherals are available to allow a guitarist, bassist, drummer and vocalist to all perform together. And major record labels are promising unprecedented cooperation, including making new music available weekly for the game.

Now, Rocky Mountain News is reporting that a Rock Band TV show may be under consideration at MTV. While nothing official can be reported, MTV senior VP of home entertainment Paul DeGooyer says of it, "we need the right concept, one that looks at how gamers engage with the game." Implications may be, though, that they are trying to find a way to do it without diluting or damaging the Rock Band name.

South Park: Guitar Queer-o

south park
(S11E13)
After seeing the title of this episode, I'm more embarrassed than I already was to admit that I'm a fan of Guitar Hero. In fact, I own all four versions of the game. There. I said it.

Thankfully, I will say that I never have, nor will I ever, play in my underwear. As far as you know.

This was a strange episode given what we've been seeing the past few weeks. We barely got anyone other than Stan and Kyle this time, but what we got was, as always, pure gold. Oh and by the way, one of our sister sites, Joystiq, liveblogged the episode tonight.

David Cross and J. Mascis shred - VIDEO

guitar heroWho will come out the victor when you pit actor David Cross (Mr. Show, Arrested Development) against Dinosaur Jr frontman J. Mascis in a Guitar Hero II challenge? The answer is in the video below.

Of course, I really didn't care who won, it was just fun to watch Cross riff and read the TelePrompter along with the host. Also, his comments about AOL at the end of the video almost had me on the floor (the video was made for AOL's The DL, and AOL also owns TV Squad). He should like, tell jokes in front of people for a living. Mascis seemed a little uncomfortable, but give the guy a break, he wasn't exactly in his element, being an actual muscian and all.

Considering the popularity of Guitar Hero, will they eventually make similar games for other instruments? Because I think I could totally kick ass on Clarinet Hero. Trombone Hero, not so much, but give me a woodwind and I'll rock the freakin' house down (or up, I can rock in all kinds of directions).
