You know the one I'm talking about. After the writers strike ended last year in February, most of the networks made the interesting decision to just go ahead and shelve most of their freshmen series for the season, even if they'd picked up their "back nine" orders. Instead, they thought they'd launch the shows to big fanfare this fall, almost as if they were new again. Unfortunately, it looks like this plan backfired on them tremendously.
Across the board, those
sophomore series that went on hiatus for more than six months are way down in the ratings. Apparently, absence doesn't make the heart grow fonder when it comes to the television landscape. It makes the instant gratification generation forget you existed. And stop caring.

It seems like if you're an actress in Hollywood, you're either too fat or too skinny.
A couple days ago,
EW's PopWatch reported that The CW asked the younger female stars of
90210 (Shenae Grimes, Jessica Stroup and AnnaLynne McCord) to address their "weight issues."
Sure, skeletal celebrities are nothing new (and almost seems like a requirement of fame), but even one of the stars of another CW teen drama,
Gossip Girl, thinks a line has been crossed. Penn Badgley (Dan) told
Popeater.com that he doesn't like "thin L.A. girls" and hopes "they eat a double cheeseburger or something."

I'm always fascinated by the ad campaigns that the networks come up with to sell or promote TV shows. I remember in 2004 when Fox debuted
House, they created a magazine insert DVD of the pilot. It was a great way to get TV fans to try the show, and I -- for one -- bought
Entertainment Weekly and watched the show.
Giveaways are one way to drive awareness -- and sample the product -- but another is with a print ad campaign. Recently,
Gossip Girl came up with a savvy set of posters and advertisements to call attention to the naughtiness of the show.
Now comes a
new, original campaign for Showtime's Dexter in which the Michael C. Hall's character is imagined on the cover of magazines. Dexter on
Esquire,
The New Yorker, GQ, Wired; high-profile magazines that have a distinctive look, reconfigured for serial killer hiding in plain sight, Dexter Morgan. The ads look amazing and will be seen in all variety of magazines and plastered up as posters all over the place.

Jennifer Aniston, decided to return to television in order to stalk Jack Donaghy. After that came news that
Oprah was scheduled to play herself on an upcoming episode.
That's a lot of guest stars to pack into one season, but now we have news of two more. Everybody's favorite
Gossip Girls, Blair and Serena, AKA
Leighton Meester and Blake Lively, are coming to 30 Rock. What on earth could bring these Upper East Siders to Midtown? Are they trying to overthrow Liz Lemon as queen bee of

I feel as though I've done nothing the entire week except watch The CW. When I close my eyes, I just see images of highlights, dangerously low BMIs and huge, blinding teeth. Apparently, I'm not alone. When
Gossip Girl's second season premiered on Monday night, it grabbed record ratings for the show that, up until then, has never been
quite popular enough to live up to its buzz. On Wednesday night, even more people tuned into the
premiere of 90210, which garnered huge ratings for The CW, with 4.9 million viewers. It seemed as though people were finally flocking to the fledgling network. However,
Wednesday's premiere of America's Next Top Model didn't exactly keep the streak alive.
Top Model, which began its 11th cycle, but not, as Tyra said, it's "second
decade," didn't have viewers glued to their TVs.
The two-hour premiere only nabbed 3.5 million viewers, with 1.7 million of those in the coveted 18-49 demographic. This is down 11% from cycle 10, which premiered in February of this year, and down 32% from last September's cycle 9.

I was really bitter towards CW for canceling
Veronica Mars, so I was planning on not watching
Gossip Girl out of spite. However, as a fan of (at least the first few seasons) of
The O.C., the idea of another
Josh Schwartz show intrigued me. Okay, that, and the fact that I loved
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (shut up), and the realization that my one-woman boycott wasn't going to bring
VM back, all led me to the show.
When I tuned in, I really thought it would be
The O.C. East, but Schwartz and the rest of the writers did a good job of making it its own show, I'm sure in no small part due to the fact that they had a series of books to work with. In fact, last night's
90210 premiere reminded me more of
The O.C. than
Gossip Girl ever has. So when I read that an
O.C. alum was making her way to the Upper East Side, I wasn't exactly thrilled.

Girl. It's true,
it's an impossibility.
Gossip Girl, the random, trashy, highly buzzed about but low-rated CW drama, is returning for its second season on September 1st. Recently,
The CW has released some teasers to catch us up on what everybody's favorite perfectly-coiffed Upper East Siders are up to. Basically, they're still having sex and backstabbing one another, but this time it's in The Hamptons!
I've got to admit that I'm ashamed of myself for being this excited about
Gossip Girl's return. It's cheesy and silly, and is definitely not a replacement for The CW's oft-mourned
Veronica Mars. Regardless, seeing the gang (minus the Humphreys) in these promos was nice--in a very similar way to when someone you went to high school with but weren't friends with finds you on Facebook. It's interesting to see what they've been up to, but you're still pretty sure you're not going to be besties.

When you're a ratings-challenged fledgling network like the
CW, you're going to do anything you can to get a leg up on the competition. Releasing
sex-filled advertisements for your most high-profile show is a good start, but that alone won't get the job done. To that end, the CW has just announced that it's moving its fall premiere dates up to September 1st, well ahead of the beginning of the traditional broadcast season.
The idea behind the move is that you're already going to be hooked on
Gossip Girl and
Top Model by the time the other networks get around to premiering their fall shows, sometime around mid-to-late September. The season isn't the only thing the CW is starting early, however. Starting in November, they're also extending prime time, with original programming beginning at 6:30 on Sunday nights.

It looks like
guest-starring on Chuck isn't the biggest thing going on in Nicole Richie's TV career. The former
Simple Life star has just announced that a
TV show based on her 2005 novel is in the works. Richie's roman à clef, titled
The Truth About Diamonds, follows Chloe Parker, the adopted daughter of a rock star who runs around with a bad crowd in Hollywood. Throughout the novel, Parker faces struggles with the law, drugs and her friends. Sound familiar?
Not only is Richie planning on producing the show, but she'll be appearing in it as well. Even though she based Chloe Parker on herself, Richie says that she won't necessarily be playing the lead, "I would definitely produce and definitely be in the show, [but] I don't know if I need to be the star of this show." Since production is still in the early stages, the details surrounding the series remain unclear, such as what network it will be on, and whether or not it will be a drama or a comedy.

I'm a sucker for stunt casting. Sure, it can get annoying after a while, (hello
Will & Grace) but I still love seeing a Michelle Trachtenberg on
Gossip Girl or a Britney Spears on
How I Met Your Mother. So I was really excited to read that
Courteney Cox has signed up to guest star on Scrubs this season.
Cox, who was most recently seen on her FX drama,
Dirt, is returning to the small screen for a three-episode arc as Sacred Heart's newest Chief of Medicine. The position was left open after Dr. Kelso (Ken Jenkins) retired at the end of last season. Since Cox is only going to be on the show for a handful of episodes, something tells me that she's not going to do well in her new position. Her character is said to "ruffle some feathers," and it sounds like she's ruffling the wrong ones right out the door.
