Cagney & Lacey Season One - DVD review

Sharon Gless & Tyne DalyBefore you get a copy of this DVD you have to do two things: Watch the TV movie with Loretta Swit as Chris Cagney, and completely forget that Meg Foster ever played the part at all.

The DVD collection of the first season of Cagney & Lacey contains no episodes featuring Meg Foster. This comes as little surprise considering all the drama that accompanied getting C&L on the air in the first place.

As with most DVD collections, this one is really only for original fans of the show. The picture quality has been improved very little, if at all, and the episodes are dripping with '80s cop drama earmarks, but still you can't ignore the groundbreaking plot lines. Aside from the daily struggle Christine & Mary Beth face as female detectives, there are also episodes about drug abuse, date rape and struggles with alcoholism that, for the time, were incredibly ground breaking.

Stephen Colbert... nine Colbert moments

Mr. Stephen Colbert had a great run in 2005, when The Colbert Report debuted and took off like a mighty eagle... with a disturbingly dedicated fanbase. This past year somehow managed to top all that, making Colbert and his show absolute pop culture giants and easily one of the biggest hits of 2006. I've been a fan ever since I first saw the man many years ago on The Daily Show and Strangers With Candy, so I feel like I've seen his career positively explode before my very eyes. Ohh, my boy's all grown up.

Now now, let's move on to my list before I get even more sappy and awkwardly maternal (the fact that Colbert's over twenty years older than me does not help the strangeness). Here are the top nine Colbert Report moments of 2006!

Colbert cooks with Fonda and Steinem - VIDEO

Jane Fonda, Stephen Colbert, Gloria SteinemI know this aired last week, but I thought it was one of the finer moments on the now one-year history of The Colbert Report (it first aired one year ago today...):

During a special episode Colbert called "A Salute to the American Lady" (which he was "mandated" to do for various reasons), Stephen interviewed noted femenists Jane Fonda and Gloria Steinem, who were starting a radio network called GreenStone Media. The interview was about the role of feminism in today's world. But, instead of talking to them in a normal setting, he decided it would be more appropriate to talk to them during a cooking segment.

So there's Colbert, Fonda and Steinem, talking feminism while wearing aprons and making some silly-looking apple pie. Both women even followed the suggestion on Stephen's apron and kissed the cook (Jane kissed Stephen more than once... that minx!). It was a simple but funny juxtaposition, and the fact that both Fonda and Steinem got the joke made it even better. The video of the segment is after the jump.
