The actresses who have been competing for the Primetime Emmy award in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category these past few years are some of the top names in the business. Two-time Oscar winner
Sally Field for
Brothers & Sisters, multiple Emmy winner -- including last year's award --
Glenn Close for
Damages. Previous winner Mariska Hargitay for
Law & Order: SVU. Oh, yes, there's also
Saving Grace's Holly Hunter, another former Oscar winner, and Golden Globe winner Kyra Sedgwick for
The Closer.
All these ladies are worthy of winning nominations again, and it wouldn't be surprising to see one or all of them nominated. But if I were to have a say, there are some other women I hope to see recognized when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced this Thursday.

Payback's a bitch, ain't it? Not if you're Ellen Parsons - then it's a slow, methodical, patience-testing process where it apparently takes six months before you get to shoot a gun. And thus begins the second chapter in the twisted law legacy of Ellen Parsons. After one episode, David Connor's killer is no longer the issue at the top of everyone's mind.

I just finished watching season one of FX's
Damages and, wow! What a gripping, twisty-turny show that had me hooked the whole way. Glenn Close acts the socks off anyone in close range, but the rest of the cast are no slouches either.
I've gained new respect for Ted Danson in his role as Arthur Frobisher, a high-stakes entrepreneur who's gotten himself into some pretty deep doo-doo. And Rose Byrne as the young-pup attorney Ellen is like watching a steely-eyed carp in the making.
I can't wait for season two to start on Jan. 7 at 10 PM, but until then I'll have to appease myself with
Jonathan's early look and this poster.

Over at the L.A. Times, Tom O'Neil has put together two teams to predict the Emmys. One consists of writers who cover TV, including our pal from AOL, Maggie Furlong. The other is filled with award nuts, like O'Neil. The teams found a lot of common ground, with overwhelming agreement on Mad Men for Best Drama and 30 Rock for Best Comedy. They also seem pretty set on Glenn Close (Damages) for Best Actress, Drama and Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) for Best Actor, Comedy.
Those all sound like reasonably safe bets. Things get a little more interesting when you look at some of the other categories. Best Actor, Drama looks to be a three way race between Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Hugh Laurie (House), and James Spader (Boston Legal). All solid choices, to be sure, but the most surprising part of the category is that Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), who should win, only garnered one vote. If you like strong women on TV, the kind you've been seeing on TNT in
The Closer and
Saving Grace, you'll be happy to hear that the network has more formidible females on tap.
TNT has given the greenlight to a new drama called Time Heals. And with the kind of top notch talent behind the scenes, I can't imagine this drama not making it to air.
The guy who is creating the show, John Masius, is an Emmy-winning writer, having grabbed two Emmys when he worked on
St. Elsewhere. So, yeah, this is sounding better and better because Masius knows about medical drama and
Time Heals is the story of Nancy Hawthorne, a single mother who is the head of nursing at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. She's the type of woman who really cares about her patients and becomes emotionally involved in her job.

The FX panels on Tuesday were pretty uneventful,
aside from the news from network president John Landgraf. There was supposed to be a panel for
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but that was mysteriously dropped from the schedule. I'm guessing that the boys figured they'd get too hammered at the FOX party the night before to handle questions from the reporters. Indeed, I witnessed Rob McElhenny and Glenn Howerton try to ride the Tilt-a-Whirl at the Santa Monica pier right after they pounded a couple of beers. Maybe canceling the panel was a smart idea.
Anyway, the three shows that paneled were
Damages, Sons of Anarchy, and
The Shield. More on what transpired after the jump.

CBS is rounding up some
A-listers to appear at The Tony Awards this year. Alec Baldwin (
30 Rock), Kristin Chenoweth (
Pushing Daisies), Glenn Close (
Damages), Richard Griffiths, Laura Linney (
John Adams), John Lithgow, Liza Minnelli, Mary-Louise Parker (
Weeds), Daniel Radcliffe, Brooke Shields (
Lipstick Jungle) and Marisa Tomei will be presenters at this year's award show. As previously announced, Whoopi Goldberg of
The View, a Tony-winner herself, will be this year's host.
Also, the Tony Award-winning productions
The Lion King and Rent will make rare encore performances at this year's gala.
The 62nd Annual Tony Awards will be broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 15th from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. ET (delayed PT) on CBS. Here's my issue with the
Tonys. It's long and it's usually a snore. Do you think this effort to spice up the show will pay off? Does it make you want to tune in?

Have you noticed lately that the new faces cropping up on TV series in starring roles are often actors you've never seen before -- or if you have, it was in a supporting role of a feature or a foreign TV show? Think about it, Lee Pace as the Pie Man on
Pushing Daisies, Jonny Lee Miller on
Eli Stone, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in
New Amsterdam, Michelle Ryan in
Bionic Woman, all of these leads are relatively new faces. That's one way to cast series. Another is for big stars to take to TV, if not for the first time, than for a return.
In an interesting article at IGN.com, blogger Travis Fickett points out that there used to be a line of demarcation between the worlds of acting:
film actors vs. television actors. But nowadays the stars are going back and forth a lot more fluidly.

Is it really a big surprise that television advertising isn't as effective as it used to be? As TV watchers -- okay, we're uber-watchers -- we know that with DVRs and TiVos we're zooming through ads, or we're channel surfing in between segments of our favorite shows, or renting/buying content in formats that allow us to avoid commercials altogether. Now, according to the Association of National Advertisers and Forrester Research's TV & Technology Survey,
we learn that six out of 10 marketers believe that TV advertising has become less effective in the past two years. And it's getting worse.

Zooey Deschanel and
Glenn Close would lend their voices to upcoming episodes of FOX's hit animated series
The Simpsons. Deschanel will appear in an episode that will air in April, while Close will reprise her role of Mona, Homer's mother, in an episode that is set to air in May.

EW.com put up the The Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations and we've got the nominees in the television categories for you. Not surprisingly, The Sopranos swan song continues to get awards show nods, with bids in all three categories it qualifies for. 30 Rock accomplished the same feat in the comedy categories. No other show was represented in all three drama or comedy categories.
Newcomers include Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Michael C. Hall (Dexter) in male dramatic actor. Holly Hunter (Saving Grace) was a new face in female dramatic actor, while Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?) and Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty) represented comedic actresses. Only Mad Men was able to creep in as a new show in the ensemble drama category. The complete list is after the jump.

... Six welcome returns.
Every fall season I get stoked about all the new shows, with cool new premises ("A guy travels through time trying to make right what once went wrong!"-- Journeyman not Quantum Leap), and all the big changes in store for existing shows. But it's equally exciting to see which beloved actors will be returning to television. Brad Garrett coming back to television in 'Til Death last year? Cool! Patricia Heaton and Kelsey Grammer both coming back to television ... together? That's gotta be awesome, right? Jerry O'Connell on Carpoolers ... well ... ? I like the guy, but I'm not scheduling a 'Welcome Back' shindig for him.
Half the fun of a new television season is the return of great actors and actresses to the small screen. And while I could have easily done 10 or even 20 of these, I've narrowed it down to the six talents who were most welcome back in my house on a weekly basis this past year. I've even been so bold as to rank them. Feel free to agree, disagree and present your own lists in the comments.

Variety reports the 12th Annual Satellite Awards will be handed out on December 16, 2007. The awards cover film, television, DVD, and new media. These appear to be the first major awards to involve television series from the new season, and include multiple nominations for both Chuck and Pushing Daisies, including nods for lead actor and series, comedy or musical. Other new show nominations include Patricia Heaton (Back to You) and Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies) for lead actress, comedy or musical, Glenn Close (Damages) for lead actress, drama and Mad Men for drama series.

FX has ordered 26 new episodes of
Damages, which will result in two new seasons for the critically acclaimed drama. According to a
TVGuide.com article, Jamie Erlicht, the Co-President of Programming and Production for Sony Pictures Television, praised FX for its support of the show.
Many members of the cast were originally contracted for six years including Glenn Close, Rose Byrne, and Tate Donovan, as well as producers Todd A. Kessler, Glenn Kessler, Daniel Zelman.

A season squaring off with Michael Chiklis on
The Shield must have whetted Glenn Close's appetite to do edgy series TV.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Close
has signed on to star in her first TV pilot, a legal drama for FX.
The pilot is the creation of Glenn Kessler, Todd A. Kessler, and Daniel Zelman. The Kesslers worked together on the short-lived
Robbery Homicide Division, and Todd wrote and produced for
The Sopranos. The series, yet to be titled, will have Close playing Patty Hughes, a famous litigator who always works on high-profile cases.
