Dear Jay,
Let me start by stating that I think you are a very funny man. I have been following your career for years and you're great. You were wonderful in
Jerry Maguire. Of course, you were speaking lines written by Cameron Crowe, so that was a plus, but you delivered the performance. Bravo,
Jay Mohr.
That said, I have to talk to you now about
Gary Unmarried. Jay, you can make this so much better. Really, you are capable of so much more. Yes, you don't have Cameron Crowe writing for you now. I'm fully aware of that. But you're there.
Gary Unmarried may have started as a formula, and it still has too much of that formula intact. The bitchy, controlling wife/ex-wife? Haven't we seen the Allison character on
Two and a Half Men (Judith),
Everybody Loves Raymond (Deborah),
The King of Queens (Carrie)? Do you see the pattern here? I do.

TV Guide has released their list of shows that are safe for the rest of the season and those that are "on the bubble," the shows that are in danger of being canceled. There are a lot of shows on the latter list that aren't a surprise, such as
Hank,
Gary Unmarried,
Cold Case, and
The Forgotten (I'm surprised
Cold Case even made it to another season).
But among the list of shows are a few that I didn't think were in danger, including
Gossip Girl and
Fringe. I know that
Gossip Girl isn't a show that gets incredible ratings, but that describes The CW in general, and I figure that even if it gets low ratings it's sort of the network's signature show. As for
Fringe, the ratings are a lot worse this season than last season, but it would still surprise me if the show went away, especially since it has its fan base and it's produced by JJ Abrams.
Any other shows on the list that surprise you?

I think
Gary Unmarried might just be the new
Yes, Dear. Remember that show? It lasted for several seasons even though no one talked about, and just when we thought it had gone away it came back for several more episodes. I think this Jay Mohr comedy might be in the same category: it's a sitcom that, before you know it, is going to be in season five.
Gary has a new job as a radio host. Did you watch it? Is this show any good? Is it an ignored comedy gem we should all be watching? It
is produced and directed by James Burrows, after all. I watched the first two episodes and it's not terrible, but it just seems to be a lesser sitcom.

In this age where there seems to be an awards show every three weeks, is the
People's Choice Awards relevant anymore (if it ever was)? More than anything else, it seems like an award based only on popularity, which is why you get some really lame nominations and winners every year.
In the
Favorite TV Comedy category,
Gary Unmarried is nominated along with shows like
30 Rock,
The Office,
Chuck, and
How I Met Your Mother. In the
Favorite TV Comedy Actor category, David Spade is nominated.

While it's still waiting to find out if it might get renewed for next season,
Gary Unmarried creator Ed Yeager and fellow exec producer Ric Swartzlander
have already bolted for greener pastures. Apparently it was the old "creative differences" standby that caused the problem. Now normally I'd say that a creator leaving a show would be cause for serious concern, but
Gary Unmarried is a fairly traditional family-oriented sitcom, so I should think someone else could steer that ship.
The show was entertaining enough when I watched it, but I never felt particularly compelled to come back the next week and watch it again. I can't help but think that this may be enough to doom the show. CBS has a lot of new shows to look at, and with
Gary just so-so in the ratings they might want to throw something else against the wall and see if they can't improve on just so-so. If it does get yanked, they can have Jay Mohr return to the just renewed
Ghost Whisperer. He's a better foil for Melinda than the still awkward Jamie Kennedy anyway.
