Felicia Day ... the next American Idol?

Felicia DayFelicia Day has already proven herself a terrific singer through her role on Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog. Now she's extending her talent resumé via her own project, The Guild, by having the cast of that show appear in a pop video for a song called "Do You Want To Date My Avatar?"; she's also the lead singer. Ms. Day may very well be the next Kylie Minogue.

It's rare for a U.S. production to release a music single in conjunction with a show, however Felicia herself created this show and if she wants to use it to launch her singing career, then more power to her. Why do I envision this group doing a live concert at the next San Diego Comic Con?

How soon before Ms. Day is the star of her own television drama or comedy? Nerd boys: she's hot, she sings and she plays MMORPGs. Admit that you want her. Video is after the jump.

Dollhouse: Epitaph One

Dollhouse - Epitaph One

(S01E13)
This episode of Dollhouse never actually aired on Fox, and in fact, it's not going to. I'm not sure why, though, because I thought it was fantastic. Yes, it was a dramatic departure from what had gone before, but despite its unique presentation, it offered some amazing insight into the world of Whedon's Dollhouse, and its future.

"Epitaph One" will be available on the Dollhouse: Season One DVD, available July 28, 2009. It was also screened this past weekend at Comic-Con. Even though I wasn't there, I did manage to get my hands on it, so join me, if you will, for a very spoilery look at the true season finale of Dollhouse.

Stick a fork in it: Dollhouse is done (unofficially)

DollhouseFelicia Day (Whedon mainstay and star of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog) has let everyone know via Twitter that her episode (#13) of Dollhouse will not be airing on Fox and will only be on the upcoming DVD set. It should be noted that official notice of cancellation has not come from Fox yet. Give it time.

While this is not unexpected news giving the declining ratings of the show, it does suck donkey balls nonetheless. Is it even possible for Joss Whedon or his fans to trust Fox anymore? Perhaps we're simply too much the minority for the network to care. Give the world to the reality television fans. Our cause is lost. Granted, the crappy timeslot didn't help matters.

On the other hand, if Dollhouse follows in the footsteps of Firefly, we might be seeing a movie from the franchise in a year or two. It's just a glimmer of hope for Whedon-fans. (Thanks to RazorD for the tip).

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog - DVD review

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along BlogI recognize that the fans of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog have probably already gotten the DVD (available exclusively on Amazon.com), so in effect I'm preaching to the choir. However, if you haven't gotten around to enjoying it by now, what are you waiting for? This is, quite simply, the best thing to come out of the writer's strike.

If anybody thinks Joss Whedon's reputation is overblown, then you only have to listen to the genius that is "Commentary! The Musical" to realize how much of a genius the man is. It's tough to write a musical, but it's even tougher to write a 42-minute piece of musical metafiction that goes generally along with the beats of the original production and involves pretty much every cast member big and small (and some of the extras, as well). Granted, in all cases, he had help from his brothers Zack and Jed and Jed's fiancée Maurissa Tancharoen, so it must run in the family.

Top TV Stories of 2008: Web TV goes big time - VIDEOS

NPH as Dr. HorribleAs I look back at the posts TV Squad did this year, a certain topic popped up quite a bit: "Hey, folks, take a look at [Name of big star] in this [funny/quirky/dramatic] web series you can only find at [Name of web site]!" While the quality of and star power behind web-exclusive programming has been building for a couple of years now, 2008 saw an explosion of web series that attracted enough buzz to make one wonder if Jeff Zucker wasn't thinking of this a little bit when he offered Jay Leno the 10:00 slot on NBC.

What caused this explosion? Well, we can thank one of 2008's other big stories -- the writers' strike -- for a lot of it.

TV Squad Ten: TV celebs worth following on Twitter

john hodgman twitter daily show

Yep, I got a Twitter. It's part of my plan to plaster the Internet with links to my must-read blog posts about '90s indie rock and that handsome bastard Neil Patrick Harris (don't ask). Fortunately for you, some clever TV stars also use Twitter for fun and shameless self-promotion.

Here are ten fan-friendly TV celebs worth stalking on Twitter. Unlike that fake Stephen Colbert, these guys are all one-hundred percent, real-life paparazzo magnets.

House: Not Cancer

Hugh Laurie of House(S05E02) Everyone, meet Lucas. Lucas, meet everyone.

Let's get to know this young man, shall we? He's in his mid-30's and a private detective. He doesn't think he's a good private dick, but in reality he really is and there's a possibility he just puts on a show of being inept. He can be an ass at times, as seen during his introductory moment to the Princeton-Plainsboro staff, and he can also be a bit too honest. In truth, he is very similar to one Dr. Gregory House, who has hired Lucas to check-up on Wilson after his best friend decided to shun him.

There is one difference between House and Lucas...Lucas is likable. That, and he seems to look at the world in a more positive manner than House does. And yet, that cranky old bastard likes Lucas for some reason. Is House going soft? Is he starting to realize the error of his ways? Is the world coming to an end? Am I asking too many questions? For answers to this and a recap of this week's episode jump ahead.

My post-Comic-Con report, part four

sci fi ew party
(Check out part three of this four-part report)

Tired of hearing about Comic-Con? Figured all the talk was over? Sorry to disappoint you, but due to an untimely vacation (vacation untimely? Wha...how?) and a bit of reflection on my first trip to the big 'Con, I was able to get this last bit complete for you.

The Sci Fi / Entertainment Weekly Party

Man did it feel good to have gone to my last panel. I had much sympathy for Rich, who had another nearly-full day ahead of him on Sunday. So, we went out to finally get a decent meal at an actual restaurant downtown before we had to head off to the party. We had no idea at all what to expect from the party -- would there be food? Free booze? Who would be there?

Felicia Day lands another internet gig - VIDEO

Felicia Day - The Guild, Dr. Horrible, BuffyMore fallout from Dr. Horrible, as machinima.com has hired Felicia Day to write a new sit-com. Of course, her work on The Guild probably had a lot to do with it as well. This is not just any sit-com though. It takes place inside a video game. Kind of implied by her employer, I know, but I think the fact that I recognize Gus Sorola on sight probably puts me in the minority.

Anyway... Lon over at Tubefilter got a chance to talk with Felicia about the new project. The short version is that she's still in the writing stage, so there is no cast at the moment. She wanted to take "archetypal characters from sit-coms and place them in a fantastical world." So long as that doesn't mean a fat stupid guy with a really hot wife, I like it as a starting point. The show is set to launch in the fall with five short episodes that will combine into one half hour pilot. Audience feedback will influence four more possible half hour segments.

Joss Whedon & Dr. Horrible - VIDEO - Comic-Con Report

Dr. Horrible panel
One of the panels I was most looking forward to was today's Joss Whedon panel, where he'd be discussing everything from the Buffy television series and comic books (including Fray), to the Dr. Horrible videos.

This was an interesting juggling feat for Rich and I, as I was in this same ballroom covering Stargate Continuum while Rich attending Big Bang Theory, then Rich tool over for Atlantis, then I came in for Joss. It was kinda comical, actually, as we did some quick ticket swapping to bypass the incredibly long line just for this panel. After this, Rich comes in to take over for American Dad and Family Guy. Good times.

How did Felicia Day end up in Dr. Horrible?

Felicia Day - The Guild, Dr. Horrible, Buffy, HouseRaise your hand if you love Penny from Dr. Horrible? Raise your other hand if you're such a Buffy nut that you follow the news about anyone that ever appeared on the show? I would raise both my hands, but I have to type this entry. If either of those apply to you, you'll want to get a gander at the video after the jump.

Our friends over at Mahalo Daily caught up with Felicia Day at Comic-Con. They talk about her web series, The Guild, which has a new season coming soon, and then get into Dr. Horrible. She explains how she ended up working on the project and gives her thoughts on working with Joss Whedon, and Neil Patrick Harris. If that's not enough, she also reminds us that she will be showing up as a patient on House this fall. No groundbreaking news (like when there might be a Dr. Horrible 2), but a fun video for Felicia fans.

Dr. Horrible by the numbers

Felicia Day - Dr. HorribleNow that we've all had a chance to take in and digest the saga of Dr. Horrible, one of the big questions is "Did it work?" It certainly seemed to work for the viewers. In our poll, an astounding 74.2% of you gave it 5 out of 5. Another 22.5% went with 4 out of 5. The bigger question though, is did it work out for everybody on the money end? And I ask that rather selfishly. Sure, I'd like to see Whedon, Fillion, Harris, Day, and the whole crew make a few bucks. But really, I'm more concerned with getting to see more of the story. If the numbers worked out for all involved, the chances of that happening increase greatly.

Jeffrey McManus has made some educated guesses at just how the numbers shake out for those involved. The short version of McManus' analysis: At a million iTunes downloads he has the principle actors bringing in something in the neighborhood of $100,000 with Whedon coming in at around $4 million $2.6 million. I'm not sure how feasible one million iTunes downloads on iTunes is, but I do know that at the moment Dr. Horrible counts for 3 of the top 4 episodes and the top season on the U.S. lists. Add in the international markets and it's certainly not an outlandish goal.

Doctor Horrible, the aftermath

Neil Patrick Harris - Dr. Horrible
If you are like me, you stayed up late Friday night just to catch Act 3 of Doctor Horrible, even though you needed to be up at 5AM to watch F1 in Germany. Chances are that there are more of you that stayed up late and couldn't give two shakes about a car race at Hockenheim, but either way, we've come to the end of Joss Whedon's great experiment. It seemed like a good idea to get a post up and see what everybody thought. A lot of it was what I expected based simply on the players involved. It stood to reason that there would be some good yucks, a bit of a twist, and since this is Joss Whedon, even...

Dr. Horrible: Act One goes live

Neil Patrick Harris as Dr Horrible
The wait is over. Joss Whedon's new project, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, made it's debut overnight with "Act One" going live on the internet. Acts Two and Three will follow on this Thursday and Saturday.

Unfortunately, the premiere was not without its issues. Almost as soon as the video became available, the familiar complaints of U.S. only video started rolling in. To their credit, team Dr. Horrible quickly updated their twitter account to let everyone know they were working on international viewing.

Assuming the geography issues get ironed out, it was a great start to the series. Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) is very funny as Dr. Horrible and Nathan Fillion's Captain Hammer is the perfect foil. As good as Harris is, Fillion steals his thunder a little bit when he makes his grand entrance. Felicia Day is also terrific as Penny, and the three of them all do a nice job with what are very entertaining songs.

This is a slam dunk for anyone that counts themselves a Whedon fan. For those of you that are not among his legions, it's still worth a look. It's a little bit crazy, but the fun kind of crazy. The episodes are also available from iTunes.

Is Dr Horrible the One? - VIDEO

Dr. Horrible
Technically it is Buffy/Angel week, but all things Whedon have a way of just melding together into one big stew. So it's a fortuitous bit of timing that a trailer for Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog was released this week. For those still unaware of just what Dr. Horrible is, I think it was summed up best by Nathan Fillion in a recent interview. It's about a super-villain (Neil Patrick Harris) who falls in love with a girl (Felicia Day), and the super-hero (Nathan Fillion) who blows it for him. The super-hero is kind of a dick. And... it's a musical. I think it could be very much more than that. More on that, and the new trailer, after the jump.
