The Jay Leno Show: Halle Berry

Halle BerryI'm starting to get a feel for what these "comedy correspondents" are for. They'll be a recurring rotation of comedians on-hand to submit video shorts and provide comedy bits on the show. Basically, it's NBC coming through at least a bit on this being a "comedy" show instead of just a retooled talk show.

Unlike The Daily Show correspondents, Jay's correspondents are treated like guests rather than as a part of the show. Maybe, as time goes on and we see them over and over again, this will change. Perhaps they could even develop their own unique voice that we'll find ourselves looking forward to.

Tonight, D.L. Hughley went to speak to government representatives in California to talk about the sad state of the state's economy. From there, he wound up putting on a bake sale to save the state. So it was a bit like what would happen on The Daily Show after all.

Leno's new show to feature musical guest mashups

eric clapton jay leno showAnyone out there genuinely looking forward to The Jay Leno Show? Anyone?

Like most Squadders, I'm not too thrilled with NBC's decision to hand over the nightly 10 p.m. timeslot to Leno, leaving less room on the sked for scripted dramas. The thought of watching Leno's incredibly bland stand-up routine and more "Jaywalking" segments in prime time doesn't really appeal to me. But I might just tune in, at least for a few minutes every night, to check out the show's musical segments.

Leno says he plans to showcase interesting musical groupings when the show kicks off Sept. 14. Up first will be Jay-Z with superstars Rihanna and Kanye West. On Sept. 17, Leno will feature guitar legend Eric Clapton performing with Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers. Clapton and Hornsby will perform "Space is the Place," a song from Hornsby's new album.

Leno's musical segments will probably only feature mainstream artists and hitmakers – I don't think we'll see people like Mos Def and The Silversun Pickups sharing NBC's stage anytime soon – but I'm looking forward to seeing who else gets booked to perform together.

Swingtown: Cabin Fever

Swingtown-group shot(S01E04) It's only a matter of time before we hear "Love Will Keep Us Together" on Swingtown, because that seems to me to be the theme of this show. Oh, yes, there's some experimentation with open marriage, there's been indications that the Millers could become full-fledged swingers, but it's feeling more and more that sexual curiosity will not trumped abiding fidelity and true love.

So while Susan is talking a big game, she's really more into Bruce and their re-energized sex talk. I don't really think her inviting the Deckers to the Miller cabin by the lake was a move to have a wild weekend, although it sure looked like it was going in that direction -- until the previously invited Thompsons turned up.
