Wipeout renewed for a third season

WipeoutAs I've mentioned here before a few times, I'm a fan of Wipeout. It's silly and pretty much boils down to people getting hit by something and falling down into water or mud, but I'm a guy and sometimes I want to watch a show where somebody gets hit by something and falls into water or mud.

A lot of other people like the summer show too, and now ABC has announced that the show has been renewed for a third season.

Bad economy good for reality shows

FOXSomething tells me that this reality show will cause a little bit of controversy.

Endemol, the people who bring you Big Brother and other shows, has another reality show in the works titled Someone's Gotta Go. It will feature 10 contestants who live together in a house (a la Big Brother and The Real World), but there's one catch: there's no bathroom! The one who can hold things in the longest wins $500,000 and a year's supply of bathroom tissue.

Well, OK, that's not the premise, but it's actually not as insulting and embarrassing as the actual premise of the show. Someone's Gotta Go will feature employees of a real company who give a pay cut to a fellow employee and vote out a fellow employee at the end of each show. Please note that these are real employees at a real company who are really going to lose their jobs, not to mention have their personal details revealed on national television.

The "fun" will air on FOX.

ABC hopes not to Wipeout with new reality competition

Obstacle CourseEndemol USA has a pretty solid reality track record, with NBC's Deal or No Deal and 1 vs. 100, CBS's Big Brother and ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. And, according to The Hollywood Reporter, they are hoping to continue that streak into the new year with Wipeout. ABC has ordered a pilot for the competition in which 50 people must navigate through "the world's largest obstacle course" for a chance at $50,000.

While there aren't many details as of yet, I couldn't help but be reminded of G4's Ninja Warrior, in which contestants from the world over have to complete in four rounds of obstacle course. G4 brought it to American from Japan in 2007 where it has become a guilty pleasure addiction for way, way too many of us.

Big Brother 8 bans banner planes

Jessica looking for banner planesDuring the first two seasons of Big Brother, banner planes hired by fans were the way to go. I recall various websites gathering five dollars from their forum members to hire them. Flying banner planes with cryptic and not-so-cryptic messages to the houseguests was tolerated by the producers of the show until it got out of hand in the second season.

They clamped down on the planes because the houseguests aren't supposed to have any contact with the outside world. The producers also stopped the Megaphone Lady from the first season.

UK Big Brother creators planning Rock Star Rehab

Pete DohertyMaybe it's our culture's litigiousness that inhibits American tabloids. Don't get me wrong. American tabloids, paparazzi and reality shows will definitely be held up by future archaeologists as evidence of the rapid decline of our civilization, but it is the British equivalent of these outlets that get the high marks for tastelessness. Case in point, the producers of the UK's Big Brother have announced plans for another reality outing - Rock Stars in Rehab. (Technically, it's the Dutch company Endemol producing the show, but it's being made for British TV.)

The company has approached high profile heroin addict Pete Doherty, the crack-addicted Dominic Masters of The Others and ex-Celeb Big Brother contestant Donny Tourette to appear in the series. The show would essentially lock all these addicts in a house together and film them 24-7. Critics have chastised Endemol for "using drug problems as entertainment and treating addiction like a joke." Really, if you want to be entertained by a bunch of recovering heroin addicts, rent Trainspotting.

Celebrity Big Brother UK update: Friday evictions announced

Big BrotherIf you're of a sensitive disposition, and are planning to watch tonight's live eviction of Celebrity Big Brother on your Sky+ PVR, look away now, as we're about to get all spoilery on you.

Following a total debacle earlier this week when no fewer than five housemates were nominated for eviction, Channel Four had to issue an apology after messing up the telephone appeal by asking viewers to save Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, not evict her.

Of course, Shlipa was at the centre of last week's racism row, starring none other than former housemate Jade Goody, and was waiting patiently tonight for host Davina McCall to announce the last two people to be dumped out of the house by the public.

Warning: spoilers after the jump.

Celebrity Big Brother UK Update: Five up for eviction

Dirk BenedictIn a new twist to Celebrity Big Brother here in the UK, no fewer than five of the remaining seven housemates have been nominated for eviction.

The public vote will take place on Friday, with Dirk Benedict, Jo O'Meara, Ian 'H' Watkins, Shilpa Shetty and Cleo Rocos all facing the possibility of an exit from the show before the finale.

Oddly enough, Danielle Lloyd, one of the key figures in the recent racism and bullying scandal, is not facing eviction.

The show concludes on Sunday night, with Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty still the firm favourite to win.

Celebrity Big Brother UK update: 'racism' row spills over

Shilpa ShettyWhen I posted about the most recent incarnation of Celebrity Big Brother starting up here in the UK a few weeks ago, I didn't really have any intentions of watching the current series, despite commenting that it might actually be worth watching for once.

The reason for this was largely down to the rag-tag bunch of has-beens and would-bes that the Endemol producers decided would be our entertainment for this year, and having watched the first few shows, I had to resist the urge to dip my head into a vat of boiling porridge, rather than watch any more.

However, a few days ago, things started to get very interesting.

Very interesting indeed...

ABC's big Wednesday plan

william shatnerABC has a bit of a problem. Dancing with the Stars is going to end soon, they are down to the final four now, and with that it will lose two of the top five shows on TV. They've announced their plan for Wednesday. Beginning November 22, the results show will be replaced with a new game show from Endemol USA called Show Me The Money. Contestants will be presented with 13 dancers on stage and each of the dancers will have a scroll. As they answer trivia questions, dollar amounts from the scrolls will be added to or subtracted from their total. The press release also says that the 13 dancers will be ready to break into any style of dance at any time, "while audacious master of ceremonies William Shatner spontaneously boogies with the beauties on stage." Shatner... boogies with the beauties.

1 Vs. 100: Pilot (series premiere)

1 Vs. 100(S01E01) If you're a fan of the risk-takers on Deal or No Deal, you may be a fan of NBC's new game show, 1 Vs. 100, which airs tonight at 9. Like DoND, 1 Vs. 100 is a worldwide hit produced by game-show conglomerate Endemol. Also like its game show cousin, it has a well-known stand-up comedian, Bob Saget, as the host. But unlike DoND, this show requires a little more skill from the contestant than just picking numbers at random. The problem: despite the lights, the imposing "mob" and the catchphrase -- "The money? Or... the mob?" -- 1 Vs. 100 moves too slowly, and the questions are too easy, to keep a person's interest for an entire hour.
