(S04E11) ABC brought George Lopez back out of mothballs this week, so there was no 8:00 recap show. Instead, Tom and Samantha ran through the performances quickly at the beginning of the show. The best part of that was seeing Ian's reaction to the judge's comments last night. Much like many of the readers here, Ian didn't really understand where they were coming from.
It's a good point, and something that seems to happen every season. For whatever reason, the judges get a burr under their saddle and just go after one of the better contestants, while soft-pedaling some of the lesser routines. His best course of action is to move along and know that he's in good company.

Last week, Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson
reportedly made a surprise visit back to
American Idol to offer words of encouragement to this year's batch of young hopefuls.
Visiting on elimination day, Jennifer said, "I still get nervous on Wednesdays, because I was always in the bottom three." Jennifer told the semifinalists, "Remember, it's OK if you get eliminated!"
Jennifer has certainly proved that you don't have to win
American Idol in order to find success. As a follow-up to her Oscar-winning
Dreamgirls role, Jennifer
is hoping to get a part in Robert Redford's upcoming Jackie Robinson biopic.

Apparently Jennifer Hudson hasn't been reading her own press. She seemed truly stunned tonight when her name was announced for Best Supporting Actress during the
79th Annual Academy Awards (even though she was the favorite!).
When the former
Idol contestant took the stage, she took a moment to take it all in and that moment seemed to make her tear up a bit. She thanked her grandmother, her large family, cast and crew of
DreamGirls and God got a few shout-outs. The music nearly drowned out her quick 'thank you' to Jennifer Holliday, the actress who originated the role of Effie on Broadway. She did not thank anyone from
American Idol.
I think she just one-upped Kelly Clarkson!

American Idol's oh-so-brutally-honest judge Simon Cowell wasn't always quite so brutally honest. In fact, back in the 1980s, Simon was so intimidated by mega-star Eddie Murphy, that he didn't have the nerve to tell him that the songs he had written were complete and utter crap.
Simon recalls how he went to Eddie's home, expecting it to be "just the two of us and one hi-fi." Instead, he found himself in "a recording studio with about 20 nodders; a nodder is someone who gets paid to agree with the person paying him."Continue reading Simon Cowell wasn't brutally honest with Eddie Murphy

Before Jennifer Hudson
announced her hate of
American Idol, Simon Cowell told
Entertainment Tonight that he was one of her "main supporters" when she began on
Idol. And while he may have been harsh to her at times, Simon feels he was equally nice, as well.
And he's happy to take full credit for Hudson's amazing success, stating, "If it hadn't have been for
Idol, she wouldn't have been picked to do
Dreamgirls."

Chris Daughtry,
American Idol Season Five's hard-rocking fourth runner-up, proves once again, that you don't have to win
American Idol in order to have a successful career in music.
This week, Daughtry's self-titled debut album sold 65,000 copies -- just 134 more copies than the
Dreamgirls soundtrack -- leaping to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard album charts.
Despite sluggish sales throughout the record industry, Daughtry has sold approximately 1.3 million CDs total in nine week of release.

Nominations for the
79th Annual Academy Awards were announced early this morning and as expected, ex-
Idol finalist, Jennifer Hudson,
received a nod for her stand-out debut performance as Effie White in
Dreamgirls. Hudson will compete against Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuch (
Babel), Cate Blanchett (
Notes on a Scandal), and Abigail Breslin (
Little Miss Sunshine) in the Best Supporting Actress category.
Hudson has received much praise, and several awards for her
Dreamgirls role, including the National Board of Review's Best Female Breakthrough Performance, the Broadcast Film Critics Association's Critics' Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress, and a
Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture.
To watch video of Hudson accepting her Golden Globe from George Clooney, click here. For the record, if I'm ever handed an award from Clooney, I'd better get at least a peck on the cheek or a hug (a really, really long hug) from the Hollywood hunk.

One Night Only: The Series, a new reality show on BET, debuts tonight at 7:30pm. The new series follows a group of students from McDonogh 35 High School, the oldest African-American high school in New Orleans, as they compete for roles not in Dreamgirls, but in One Night Only: Live on the Stage, a multi-media tribute to Dreamgirls. Taped in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the series will not only focus on the upcoming musical, but on the students' efforts to rebuild their homes and communities. Watching high school kids try out for a musical doesn't really interest me, but the mix of trying to be "normal" kids while dealing with one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history might make this one worth checking out.
The series will also feature guest appearances by Jennifer Hudson, Blair Underwood, Dwayne Martin, Tisha Campbell Martin, George Faison and Damone Roberts.

Ex-
Idol finalist Jennifer Hudson was awarded the 2007 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture during tonight's award show. Even though I don't particularly like film adaptations of stage productions (don't even get me started on how much I hated
Rent or
The Producers), I did enjoy
Dreamgirls and was blown away by Hudson's spectacular performance (both her singing and acting were incredible). She not only holds her own in a film full of major stars -- such as Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, and Jamie Foxx -- she pretty much steals the show.

Finally! Former
American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson has signed a record deal with powerhouse producer Clive Davis, who also has Aretha Franklin and Barry Manilow, along with other
Idol winners, on his label. Hudson was on the third season of
American Idol, where she was the sixth contestant (in the top 12) voted off the show. There was a lot of outrage after Hudson was ousted-- even Elton John weighed in and called Americans racist for voting Hudson off the show. Apparently it took a role on
Dreamgirls, alongside Beyonce, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy--plus, some love from Oprah--to get Clive Davis' attention. I look forward to a Jennifer Hudson album. This girl has one hell of a voice, and a sassy attitude to match!

(S01E08) This show has so many great moments and is so confident in its candy-colored, postmodern style that you can almost overlook the shortcomings of its less than stellar episodes. I should qualify that comment by saying that
Ugly Betty's "less than stellar" is akin to any other show's "home run." The bar's just that high, dreamgirls.
Ugly Betty is a hybrid - part "center and eccentrics" dramedy with America Ferrera as its heart and part telenovela. Most of the criticisms I read about the show revolve around the series being too much telenovela and not enough Betty or vice versa. I've got no problem with the hybrid form, but it does lay at the heart at what I thought was this episode's weakness - balance.

We interrupt Chris'
regularly scheduled review of
Scrubs to bring you my views and musings on
NBC's brilliant gem. I'm going to be reviewing both of last night's episodes in one review, which works out nicely
since they flowed more or less as one story. They both centered around guest star Mandy Moore as JD's new girlfriend. A
case of art imitating life since these two are dating (and rumored to be engaged) in real life. I'm sure it's the same
for girls, but guys have a couple of different groupings for their celebrity crushes. There's the *ahem* fantasies of
Angelina Jolie, Shakira, and Keira Knightley, and then you've got those girls that you just wish you had as your
girlfriend; Natalie Portman, Reece Witherspoon and Keira Knightley (what can I say, I've got a thing for her). Very
high a top that latter list for most guys is Mandy Moore. She just comes across as one of the generally sweetest girls
you could ever hope to meet, and these episodes certainly helped cement that persona. I hate Zach Braff. On with the
show!

Jennifer Hudson is looking great as one of the
singers in
Dreamgirls, a Broadway musical that Dreamworks is bringing to the big screen. The production
company released some behind-the-scenes video
on its website in
which Jennifer is featured prominently. She plays Effie White, one in a trio of black female soul singers who cross
over to the pop music charts in the early 1960s. While previous
reports I cited back in
November claimed that Hudson landed the lead in the movie, the behind-the-scenes video and the trailer tell a different
story. I believe she is actually a supporting actor to big names like Beyonce Knowles, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy.
Hopefully Jen makes some good connections on this flick that lead to more opportunities in Hollywood. She was a feisty
gal with a lot of fans when she was on Season 3 of
American Idol.
