New TV on DVD releases this week

Jake and the Fatman DVDHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

For some reason, I didn't know that Jake and the Fatman was out on DVD (or I knew at one point and just forgot). Is this something I want on DVD? I'm tempted, because it's a show that you'll probably never see in syndication again. It's probably way down on my list though. Password might be fun. I gotta start buying these game show releases at some point.

  • Cannon - Season 1, Vol. 2
  • Curious George - Leads the Band and Other Musical Mayhem
  • Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist - Best Of
  • Frost/Nixon - The Original Watergate Interviews
  • Jake and the Fatman - Season 1, Vol. 2
  • Law and Order - Season 6
  • Metalocalypse - Season 2
  • Mythbusters - Big Blasts
  • Password - Best Of
  • Perry Mason - Season 3, Vol. 2
  • Saturday Night Live - Season 4

Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist: The Complete Series - DVD review

Dr. Katz, Professional TherapistDr. Katz, Professional Therapist is on my short list of shows that were good from start to finish. This consistency is due to the show's brilliant comedic cast and the fact that every episode followed the same simple, perfect structure. The show's weekly guest stars are among the most talented and successful stand-up comedians around. Many of them went on to star in popular TV shows and films--people like Dave Chappelle, Ray Romano, Richard Lewis, and Wanda Sykes. There were also noteworthy appearances from now-deceased comedians Rodney Dangerfield and Mitch Hedberg, actors like Winona Ryder and David Duchovny, and award-winning writer David Mamet.

If you're like me, and have trouble picking a favorite season of Dr. Katz, the Complete Series box set is an ideal choice. At a cost ranging from $88 (comedycentral.com, on backorder) to $112 (amazon.com), the set definitely belongs in the "splurge" category, but it's well worth it.

Stump the King - The Comeback

Duck AKA DougI had a very interesting week last week. The high point was an interview I did with Laura Silverman for my podcast. Most of you will know Laura from her role as Sarah's sister on The Sarah Silverman Program. However, she also had major roles on HBO's The Comeback and the comedy classic Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist.

She had some funny things to say about working for HBO and Comedy Central but the best part of the interview was a story she told about Sarah's pooch, Duck, who plays Doug on the Comedy Central show.

Six TV doctor cage-matches I'd like to see

stethoscopeWelcome to TV Squad Lists (formerly 'The Five'), a feature where each blogger has a chance to list his or her own rundown of things in television that stand out from the rest, both good and bad.

I'm honestly not even sure how I came up with this, but there are a ton of medical dramas and comedies on TV. That means there's a lot of TV doctors, both past and present. So why not have some of them do battle? I think it seems incredibly logical. Peanut butter and jelly. Hot dogs and beans. TV doctors and cage-matches. So there... because I said so.

Now, with so many shows out there, some people may be wondering why I didn't choose doctors from some of the programs you'd expect. For instance, I stayed away from pitting any of the members of Grey's Anatomy in a battle royale because I figured if any of them got into a fight with someone, it'd just turn into an unexpected sex romp. By the same token, I didn't pick anyone from St. Elsewhere figuring that any fight involving someone from that show would just evolve into an inside joke that only a few people understood. Additionally, not every character I picked is from a straight up "medical" show and in one instance, I'm not sure they're actually even a doctor. Whatever... it sounds fun doesn't it?

Dr. Katz second season coming to DVD

dr. katzHappy news for fans of Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist: the second season of the Comedy Central animated series about a shrink whose clients all happen to be comedians will be out on DVD November 21. The show starred Jonathan Katz as a therapist who tried to help his patients by, essentially, setting them up so they could tell jokes. The series also introduced many people to the comedic genius that is Jon Benjamin, who played Katz's son Ben. Benjamin would go on to voice Coach McGuirk on Home Movies, and occasionally offer his dry delivery to other cartoons such as Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Venture Bros. Looks like I have yet another DVD set to ad to my "To Buy Later" list on Amazon. Look for Garry Shandling, Steven Wright, Rita Rudner, and Emo Philips to appear in this season.
