Right now on Cinematical

The folks at our sister site Cinematical are working hard to give you news and reviews of the best -- and worst -- the silver screen has to offer. Here are some of their musings on the latest blockbusters, indies, and everything in between:

  • Mark Ruffalo and Adrian Brody? Yes, please. Read the review of their new movie, The Brothers Bloom, on Cinematical.
  • I never saw the original Night at the Museum, but I heard from someone who attended the premiere that the sequel had several actual laugh-out-loud moments. Plus, it takes place at the Smithsonian, and as someone who grew up in the D.C. area, that's kind of cool. Anyway, if you're on the fence about seeing it, check out the trailer here.
  • Kevin Smith and Mitch Albom? Now that's a pairing I never thought I would see. But Kevin Smith doing a hockey movie? If you listen to Smodcast and have heard him get moved to tears talking about Wayne Gretsky, then that's not a shock at all.
  • They mentioned The Royal Tenenbaums, so this list is okay by me: Cinematical Seven - Favorite Con Men (and Ladies).
  • You guys, I love Who Framed Roger Rabbit?. And Die Hard? Come on. The summer of '88 was a good time to go to the movies.

Chuck: Chuck Versus Santa Claus

Chuck Xmas(S02E11) "This store has a very strict 'no bravery' policy." Chuck to Ned, gun-toting lunatic

Were you expecting a cameo by Bruce Willis on Chuck tonight? I was. The moment I saw Reginald VelJohnson in cop blues as Al, I just expected that John McClane might turn up at the Buy More looking to buy an iPod for his daughter or maybe a toaster for ex-wife Holly.

Yes, the connection to Die Hard was a major theme, especially with the Buy More staff (and Chuck's family) being held hostage by Ned, a supposed down-on-his-luck schlub who ends a high speed chase through L.A. by driving his compact through the entrance of the store.

Monk: Mr. Monk is Underwater

Monk and Dr. Bell"It's funny how the mind works."
-- Monk to Dr. Bell

(S07E05) You kind of knew when you put together the words Monk and submarine you were going to get an unusual episode, didn't you? As a longtime Monk watcher, you know that enclosed places are not Adrian-friendly environs, so when an old friend of Natalie's -- hottie Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers) as her late husband Mitch's buddy, Lt. Steve Albright -- asked Monk to investigate a suspicious death on the U.S.S. Seattle, trouble would ensue. Was it a contrived situation to get Monk trapped on board? You bet, but you accept that and move on.

What made this episode unique was how Monk reacted. Initially, he ran for the hatch like a crazed three-year-old. But then Adrian concocted a coping mechanism. This was a Monk first. To deal with claustrophia, he envisioned Dr. Bell by his side.

Day Break: Pilot / What If They Run (series premiere)

Day Break(S01E01 / S01E02) Anna Johns called Day Break "Groundhog Day meets Diehard." Before I read that, I was thinking Groundhog Day meets 24, because we are talking about 24 hours in a man's day that are very important -- essential, even. I would even throw some Traffic and Crash into the mix-- maybe because of the cinematography and direction. I admit that I had preconceived notions going into this because I have seen Groundhog Day so many times.
