Emmy unveils the Best Drama Actor semifinalists

Kyle ChandlerAnother day, another list of 10 semifinalists from the Emmys. This time, it's the Best Actor in a Drama.

There are a lot of the usual suspects on the list (which will be knocked down to five nominees in the next round), including actors from Dexter, Mad Men, Grey's Anatomy, Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad, and House. One show that's not represented is Lost. I thought Matthew Fox did some great work this season, especially his drunk/screwed-up scenes.

After the jump, the list of the ten semifinalists (also check out those in contention for Best Actress - Comedy, Best Supporting Actor - Drama, Best Comedy, and Best Drama).

Lost wins four Saturn awards

Matthew FoxThe Saturn awards ceremony was held last night, and Lost dominated the television categories with four wins. The drama won the award for Best Network Series and nearly swept the acting categories. Evangeline Lilly lost the Best Actress award to Ghost Whisperer's Jennifer Love Hewitt, last year's winner. Most of the first-time nominees, such as Pushing Daisies and Journeyman, were shut out. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was the only exception; Summer Glau tied for Best Supporting Actress.

Comedian Jeffrey Ross hosted the event. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a successful awards season for Lost. A complete list of winners in the television categories follows after the jump.

Weeds premiere sets ratings record for Showtime

Mary-Louise ParkerThe fourth season of Weeds began on Monday night, and the comedy's season premiere earned Showtime record ratings. With 1.3 million viewers, "Mother Thinks the Birds are After Her" is officially the most-watched season premiere of any Showtime series to date. Weeds broke the record formerly held by the season two premiere of Dexter, which had one million viewers.

Showtime's Secret Diary of a Call Girl also brought in a significant audience. The drama earned 949,000 viewers, setting a record for the highest-rated series premiere on the cable network. The L Word's series premiere was the previous record-holder.

Jimmy Smits joins Dexter

smitsCane may be gone from the landscape of fictional South Florida, but the actor who starred in that CBS drama seems bound to remain in the Miami area. Emmy-winner Jimmy Smits will be joining the cast of Showtime's Dexter in the new season.

Dexter, which stars Michael C. Hall as a serial killer who murders those he feels deserve to die and remains under the radar thanks to his job as a blood-splatter expert in the Miami Police department, was a breakout hit for Showtime. CBS aired slightly-altered episodes of the twisted crime drama earlier this year, in part of fill the schedule holes created by the writers' strike -- and, ironically, the failure of shows like Cane.

Showtime shake-up; fewer films, more series?

ShowtimeParamount, Lionsgate and MGM are launching a new premium cable channel next year that will likely strip Showtime of much of its theatrical movie content. Showtime was originally a sister company to Paramount until 2006 when Viacom president and CEO Les Moonves split the two companies into separate entities.

One of the reasons cited for this move was by the Showtime's vice president of corporate public relations Stu Zakim. He stated that the network no longer wanted to pay "outrageous license fees" for theatrical content.

This is actually a natural progression for the bigger name cable channels. As they develop more original content, they no longer need to rely on the movie studios to provide content for them. This is a far cry from the early days of cable television when HBO and Showtime were known as the channels from which you could watch R-rated movies in the comfort of your own home.

Dexter dates his sister?

dexterIn this news item of paramount importance, we as readers, viewers and fans learn that Dexter Morgan is dating his sister, Deborah. It seems they have been seen romantically dining together, even celebrating.

What confusion will this lead to? When Dexter looks at Deborah longingly on camera, will he be wishing they were on a date? Or does he have the lust for a kill? Will they write the dating into the show? Will Dexter and Deborah become the first brother-sister couple on the air?

Get some perspective, people. Michael C. Hall and his co-star, Jennifer Carpenter are dating. Real life. Fictionally, they can still be siblings without a conflict of interest. Let's just be happy for them that they may have found true love, shall we?

Dexter finally comes to the Xbox 360

DexterToo many anguished nights have I spent watching Showtime's Dexter, wondering aloud, "Why can't I control Dexter's actions through my Xbox like so much Lara Croft?", and I know you have too. Believe it or not, we freaks are in luck, because it looks like there's going to be a Dexter video game. Finally! Another few months without it and I would have killed someone.

Okay, I think I have reached my sarcasm quota of the day, so let's get serious here. Dexter is a fantastic show and I have watched it faithfully through its run so far. However much I enjoy it, I cannot imagine it becoming a video game, let alone playing it. The show is built around blood, self-tortured deception, and internal monologue.
