Stargate Universe gets a green light

Sci Fi LogoWith that pesky business of putting the kibosh on season six of Atlantis out of the way, Sci Fi is now ready to announce that they are giving the Stargate Universe project a green light. The show will kick off with a two hour movie early next year and transition to a regular series for the summer. Creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper will be the executive producers.

Universe will follow a new cast of characters on the adventure that comes after they explore a ship launched by the Ancients, Destiny. The reconnaissance mission takes a dramatic turn when they discover that the ship can never return to Earth. They are along for the ride as the ship carries on with it's pre-programmed navigational schedule. The adventure comes during periodic stops at stargates. The danger is that if anyone is left behind, there is no way to go back for them.

Instant Star returns!

Alexz Johnson and Laura Vandervoort - Instant StarI'm sure that thirty-something IT guys with freakish beards is not the demographic that The-N is searching for, but they've hooked me just the same. Instant Star, Beyond The Break, and South Of Nowhere have all long ago earned their season passes on my DVR, and I can be sucked into a Degrassi marathon on occasion.

If you share my predilection for Canadian teen drama, you might be interested to know that Instant Star is back with all new episodes tomorrow. And if you like the teen drama from the north but haven't managed to get on board with Jude's adventures just yet, you can catch up with a huge marathon tomorrow. Starting at 1AM, there will be 15 hours worth of episodes leading up to the fourth season premiere at 5PM PST. That premiere will, of course, answer the big question... As The-N's promo department puts it, "OMG! Who did Jude choose?!"

The N and Noggin to split into new channels

nogginVia Toon Zone comes news that Noggin and its evening version, The N, will be splitting into two separate, twenty four-hour networks on December 31.

Noggin will continue with programming aimed at the preschool set with programs like Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!, Oobi, Jack's Big Music Show, and Nick Jr. properties like Dora the Explorer, Blue's Clues and The Backyardigans.

The N, originally the evening version of Noggin aimed at teens (and "tweens" to use a meaningless marketing term), will expand to 24 hours with TEENick programming during the day (All That, The Amanda Show, etc) and original programming at night: Degrassi: The Next Generation, South of Nowhere, and Beyond the Break. The N also acquired rights to air reruns of That '70s Show starting June 2008.

My Life...Disoriented makes PBS debut

My Life...DisorientedQuick. Name a network television show, other than Margaret Cho's All-American Girl, that featured Asian-Americans in all of the lead roles. Sure, you can find a handful of Korean-Americans in the ensemble casts of Lost and Survivor, and the animated Long family rules the roost on the Disney's Channel's American Dragon. But, not since Cho's short-lived 1994 series has there been an entire show constructed around the trials and tribulations of Asian-American characters. On December 26th, that may change.

PBS affiliates around the country are debuting the series My Life...Disoriented, a Degrassi-style high school drama about sisters Kimberlee and Aimee Fung. The girls' lives are turned upside down when they move from San Francisco to a largely white neighborhood in Bakersfield, California. The show was created by Five Dollar Martini Productions - a partnership which includes three Asian-American women including actress Di Quon.

The-N kicks off their charity auction

Natalie Ramsey - Beyond The BreakI suspect I may be in the minority with this, but I watch a lot of stuff on The-N. I've seen more Degrassi, South of Nowhere, Beyond the Break, Instant Star, and Whistler than any 15 year old girl should. All the more disturbing because I am the furthest thing from a 15 year old girl.

If you share my weakness for teen drama, you might be interested in The-N's Give Some * Get Some Giveaway. Beginning today, items from many of their shows will be going up for auction. Day one features Lacey's surfboard from Beyond The Break (Natalie Ramsey pictured), Jude's silver space suit from Instant Star, Manny's spirit squad uniform from Degrassi, and Aiden's jeans from South Of Nowhere. All proceeds go to charity. That's the give. The get involves weekend giveaways of electronics, DVDs and other merchandise.

The Five: What Brett is thankful for

TivoAs we all get ready to eat way too much pie and nap/shop (choose your own adventure) away a couple days it's time to give thanks for that which is good in television land. So, this year, I'm thankful for...

1: Tivo.
I resisted the siren's call of Tivo for a long time, opting instead to stick with the complex system of tapes, VCR's and my computer that had kept me up to date for years. But finally, after hearing again and again from the TV Squad readers to just get a Tivo already, I did. And it has been as good as everyone said it would be. I'll say it. You were all right. I was wrong.

I'm still hoping for all the goodies to work with OS X, or dare I say, Ubuntu, but for now I can begrudgingly run Windows. The ability to archive shows to another machine is fantastic, and if you do the math, it works out to about the same price as using tapes for storage anyway.

Degrassi: The Next Generation in comic book form

Degrassi Extra CreditOne of Canada's greatest TV exports, next to The Kids in the Hall, was Degrassi Junior High. If I've got my lineage straight, The Kids of Degrassi Street begat Degrassi Junior High begat Degrassi High begat Degrassi: The Next Generation.

The long-rumored Degrassi: The Next Generation graphic novel series, entitled Extra Credit, has hit bookstores in Canada, and while we can't be sure if national pride has taken over or not, Volume One of the series is earning raves from its young readers.
