Bad economy good for reality shows

FOXSomething tells me that this reality show will cause a little bit of controversy.

Endemol, the people who bring you Big Brother and other shows, has another reality show in the works titled Someone's Gotta Go. It will feature 10 contestants who live together in a house (a la Big Brother and The Real World), but there's one catch: there's no bathroom! The one who can hold things in the longest wins $500,000 and a year's supply of bathroom tissue.

Well, OK, that's not the premise, but it's actually not as insulting and embarrassing as the actual premise of the show. Someone's Gotta Go will feature employees of a real company who give a pay cut to a fellow employee and vote out a fellow employee at the end of each show. Please note that these are real employees at a real company who are really going to lose their jobs, not to mention have their personal details revealed on national television.

The "fun" will air on FOX.

A new Heroes webcomic is on its way

Heroes returns to webcomic form this summer.A long time ago, on an Internet far, far, away, the creators of the NBC series Heroes decided that a weekly webcomic series would coincide perfectly with the show they were producing. I mean, Heroes is about superheroes. So, during the first season of the show, a different artist penned a short webcomic (about five pages long) that focused on the background of one of the characters, or introduced a new character not seen on the television show. Eventually, all 34 chapters of this webcomic were collected and sold as a graphic novel. All was good in the galaxy.

Disney cancels DVDs of classic 'toons

disneyThere's a lot of animation I enjoy, but Disney's output has always been near the bottom of my list. My love for all things Warner Bros. may rival whatever admiration I have for Disney, but I'll admit I've always loved Disney's short-form cartoons, especially anything featuring Donald Duck or Goofy.

Why do I mention this? Well, news is popping up on some corners of the internet where animation nerds like myself hang out, and it seems that Disney has stopped production on its "Walt Disney Treasures" DVD collections. These collections, which the studio has been putting out since 2001, would have eventually collected every Disney short ever made. Much like the Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD sets, some purists have found fault with the DVD's production values, but I file such minor glitches under "Beggars Can't Be Choosers."
