American Idol: Idol Gives Back 2008

Miley Cyrus(S07E29) Well, this is what you've all been waiting for, right? What's that? Finale? Yeah, I guess that'll be cool, too. But if you've listened to Ryan all season then you know TONIGHT is really what it's all about! If you're looking to find out who got eliminated by vote last night you're going to have to wait until tomorrow. But if you're looking for two-and-a-half hours of entertainment chock full of celebrities and song and charity, then you're looking for "Idol Gives Back."

Last year's inaugural edition was very good, and Kristin's report of the Idol Gives Back taping from this past Sunday was also very positive. We don't have any pesky (non) eliminations to deal with like last year, so just kick back, donate and enjoy. And, if you want, join us online and chat about it in real-time with other giving Idol fans.

You can join the chat starting just before 7:30/6:30pm CDT by following this link. Look for the full episode review right here later tonight.

Idol Gives Back content available on iTunes

Idol Gives Back on iTunesIf you somehow found yourself feeling unsatisfied after last week's inspirational "Idol Gives Back" smorgasbord, you can always head over to iTunes for a second helping.

For a limited time, iTunes is offering video and audio versions of the performances as well as some exclusive content that wasn't televised during the original air date.

While you can expect to pay a nominal fee for everything you download, all proceeds will be distributed to relief organizations within the U.S. and Africa via the Charity Projects Entertainment Fund.

Although "Idol Gives Back" has already brought in $60 million in donations, it's nice to see some ancillary methods like this iTunes arrangement continuing to bring even more money to the charitable cause.

Check out the American Idol official Fox Site for more details.

Rickey Minor: In the Limelight

Rickey MinorAmerican Idol is a show that takes virtual unknowns and creates stars. Even a couple of judges (Randy and Simon), and a host named Ryan Seacrest became household names thanks to Idol's success.

But there's one guy of vital importance to the show who isn't so well known. Most of the time he stays in the background. But there wouldn't be any Idol music without him. He's Idol's inhouse musical director -- Rickey Minor.

American Idol: Idol Gives Back

Elvis and Celine(S06E33) Tonight was the big night they've been talking about all season - Idol Gives Back. Over the course of the night, Idol tried its best to keep us entertained, inspired, and educated.

Some of it worked, some of it didn't. Telethons are like that. Not every bit can be a gem. But it's all for a good cause, right? So, obviously we can't complain too loudly.

My overall impression was that it seemed way longer than two hours. And I'm not just saying that to be snarky. They seriously threw in way more than I can even begin to recap. I'd be here all night if I tried to get it all in this post. So, I'm just going to stick to the highlights, and you can tell me the things that stood out for you.

Idol contestants to perform anthem written by Bono

BonoWe're halfway through American Idol's self-proclaimed "historic" charity event. Last night, News Corp donated 10 cents for every call received (up to 50 million calls).

Tonight, a bunch of celebrities (including Ellen DeGeneres, Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, and a mystery duet) will take to the stage to entertain America and raise even more money and awareness.

And before one of the Idol finalists gets booted, the kids will perform a special anthem -- "American Prayer" -- written by Bono and Dave Stewart about the AIDS emergency in Africa.

Martina McBride mentors Top 7 Idol contestants during country week

Martina McBrideThis week, Martina McBride will be coaching the remaining seven Idol finalists with their country music selections. McBride, considered the "Celine Dion of country music," will also perform her Top-5 single "Anyway" during Wednesday's live results show (April 18) on FOX.

Oh boy, this is going to be a rough week for me. I'm not much of a country music fan, so the songs aren't going to be familiar (unless they all perform Shania Twain or Faith Hill). The contestants already butchered Latin-themed music last week, under the guidance of Jennifer Lopez. But, I have a feeling that this week could be worse.

Smells like celebrity spirit

Alan CummingEvery celebrity has a fragrance nowadays. I mean, you would expect people like Jennifer Lopez and Maria Sharapova to have their own fragrance. But Alan Cumming? Celine Dion? Paris Hilton? Michael Jordan?

Slate dives into the sweet smelling waters of celebrity perfumes and colognes.  I like the description of Cumming (yes, yes, yes, insert you own joke here): "a witty, rather macho blend of bergamot, black pepper, Scotch pine, whiskey, peet, and white truffle that belies the star's epicine image."

I'd like to have a cologne of my own, but it would probably be an unappealing mixture of cheese pizza, Reese's peanut butter cups, and newspaper ink.

NBC wants a piece of American Idol

celine dion nbcNow that we're five seasons into American Idol, NBC has realized that it's a ratings powerhouse. And it wants in on some of that action. So, NBC is bringing another European singing contest across the pond (American Idol was based on the British Pop Idol). This time, it's the Eurovision Song Contest, which launched the careers of Celine Dion and ABBA. Yeah, it's been around for a bit. 50 years, to be exact.

NBC will begin its search for talent online to find singers from each state. I'm not sure if it's the same thing as this online talent competition that NBC has planned for this summer because NBC does plan to air most of the Eurovision Song Contest on its network. Just like on Idol, voting is up to the viewers. Let's just hope they don't make Celine a host.
