Let it be known that my son knows a good thing when he sees it. He's 14 now, but between the ages of six and 10, he was obsessed with
Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, a
Cartoon Network show that just earned an Emmy. Character designer
Ben Balistreri won in the
juried award category for individual achievement in animation for the "Mondo Coco" episode.
I would see the show in passing and think, what the heck is this? It just looked so weird, and the animation is practically primitive compared to today's CG standards. But the concept is somewhat more complicated.
In the
Foster's universe, imaginary friends become physical beings the instant a child imagines them. An Imaginary Friend is completely real and can be seen, heard, and felt by all under most circumstances. The only problem is that children outgrow them, and they're left to fend for themselves.

Nostalgia still reigns supreme on television (along with a lack of original material). The 60's/70's icons
The Banana Splits are
now getting their own show on Cartoon Network.
I'm old enough to remember when
The Banana Splits were on television (from reruns. I'm not THAT old) and I'm curious about how whomever now controls their fate will translate the show for newer audiences. The original show was very much a staple of the hippie culture from back then. It would be disappointing if the show went from hippie to hipster. The original show most notably launched the careers of Sid and Marty Krofft who went on to make such iconic 70's children's fare as
H.R. Pufnstuff and
The Bugaloos among others.
The most memorable part of
The Banana Splits was their theme song "The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana)". However they modernize that song, whether it becomes a rap or a
High School Musical-style pop song, I can only say right now that it will be inferior to the original.

Just in case the first two
Scooby Doo movies left you with unanswered questions, there is some good news.
A third movie is in the works and this one will be direct-to-TV-and-DVD.
The new movie is intended as a prequel and will be called
Scooby Doo: In The Beginning. It will star lesser-known actors (and by lesser I mean virtually not known at all) since the original actors
have moved on with their careers. It will be about the Scooby Gang solving mysteries together for the first time.

Cartoon lovers and comic book fanboys/girls rejoice!
Cartoon Network will be making
Firebreather,
The Vanishers, and
Mice Templar as part of their slate of
original movies. Despite the network's name, only two of these comic books will be developed into animated films.
The Vanishers will be produced as a live-action movie.

Death on a daytime soap is kind of like death in science fiction: it may be the real thing, but then again, maybe not. Fans of
One Life to Live were recently stunned by the death of Nash Brennan. His was truly a case of sudden death. One minute he was a vital part of the scene, negotiating to keep the land for his vineyard, the next he was taking a swing at Jared, falling through a skylight and fatally injured.
The chances that Nash's death is not the real thing seems remote. He was shown on his deathbed in the hospital, saying goodbye to his wife Jessica, making a heart with his finger to show her that he'll always love her. It was sad and poignant and final. At least, I think it was final. You can't always be sure on soaps, as I said.

You have to hand it to a show that really explains its premise in the title. This show could have been called Computer Wars or CyberWorld or Gemberling (the original title of the series when it was on the web), but they decided to just call it Fat Guy Stuck In Internet, which has a blunt, tabloid newspaper-ish quality. And really, wouldn't you watch a show with that title?
You'll get a chance when it premieres on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block this Sunday night (Monday morning) at 12:15am. Or you could watch some clips online starting today. The plot involves the hero, Gemberling, being sucked into the internet after spilling a beer on his computer. Inside, he befriends two others (Bit and Byte) who are trying to escape the evil head of a computer company (Ynapmoclive - read it backwards) who sends a bounty hunter after them. A wizard who sounds like Bill Cosby tells him he has to save Bit and Byte and the internet and deal with the evil Kazaa. It sounds bizarre but looks even more bizarre, like some crazy comic book mixed with special effects of 70s sci-fi shows. That's not an insult, by the way. The look works really well in a show like this.
After the jump, a scene from the show.

For many longtime TV Squad readers the name
Adam Finley could only be associated with one thing: the wide world of animation. Adam was passionate about animation, covering many shows for us here as well as reporting on anything and everything happening in the industry. So it's only right that the award for Excellence in Animation be named after him.
There's all kinds of possibilities for contenders here. I'd give a nod to both
Star Wars tributes --
Family Guy and
Robot Chicken -- and
South Park definitely stretched their animation style with '
Major Boobage,' but I didn't think the episode was all that good.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force had some good episodes this season (personal favorites include the
VeggieTales parody and that crazy trilogy that opened the season).
But I've by no means watched all the best in animation this year, so I call out to you, dear readers. Which episodes or shows do you think set the bar or even raised it in this past year? Are
The Simpsons out of their prime and not worthy of TVS recognition? How about
King of the Hill or
American Dad? The new
The Mr. Men Show is retro-tastic, simple, but still cleverly awesome! Too many to handle! Help me TVS Readers, you're my only hope!

Okay, okay. It's been a while since we've had a solid update on the
Venture Bros. and I suppose we're due for another one. With no new episodes to fill that Venture-shaped void in your hearts, it's cruel to deprive you all of this delicious information. We've got a lot of news to cover, from conventions to soundtracks to Adult Swim super-sneakiness, so let's get started.
All right, best news first: The official premiere date for Season Three is June 1! It has been confirmed by
Jackson Publick, so you know it's good. The crew is about to get back to work and start Season Four, which means the wait for a new season won't be quite as painful as usual.

Clone Wars, Secret Saturdays, a teenager with a super watch, and yet another Batman cartoon. These are just some of the items that were announced at the Cartoon Network upfronts this past week. A presentation, mind you, that was attended by one George Lucas.
Lucas was there to promote the CN's pickup of the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which many are expecting big things of. This series, which we told you about way back in May of last year, will continue the adventures of Obi-Wan, Anakin, and many others during the Clone Wars. According to Stuart Snyder, President and COO of Turner Animation, Clone Wars will be a game changer for the network and will be event viewing for kids as well as entire families. "Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be appointment television for everyone in the family", said Snyder

(S05E03) "...and how was your fix? Did you ride the white horse?" - Markula
Wait just a second. Last week was mind-boggling enough, but did we just witness the completion of a trilogy? An actual episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force that required you, the viewer, to have seen the previous two episodes to know what was going on? Inebriated college students around the country are surely cursing at their TVs in an effort to understand why their favorite drunken hobby has suddenly required them to think.

(S05E02) "Sing for him John Kruk!" - Chrysanthemum
Wait a second... I'm going over this whole series in my my mind. Did we just get a continuation of a story line? An actual episode that picked up where last week's installment left off? Is ATHF going serial? This is madness! Sure, there are recurring characters that come back now and then, but there's never been an on-going plot that warrants two whole episodes. The one downside (it's really not all that bad), is that we went another week without Frylock, Shake, and Meatwad. But I'm sure they're having plenty of fun with Marcula's military desert spiders or whatever the hell kidnapped them.

Jackson Publick (a pseudonym for Christopher McCulloch)
has released the cast photo for The Venture Brothers Season 3 on his LiveJournal blog. You have to scroll down a little to see it. It has many old characters in it along with many new ones.
A few characters, such as J.J. Venture and Jonas Venture, Sr., appear twice. I don't know what that means, but it does come across as foreshadowing. Clones, perhaps?
The Venture Brothers has a history with cloning.

What are you going to do? The Office, How I Met Your Mother, and even new shows like Pushing Daisies and Chuck are either out of fresh episodes or quickly running out. Well, you don't need to spend the "strike season" curled up in the corner of your bedroom crying through a pile of TV Guides, remembering the good old days when you didn't already know what was going to happen this week on House.
Television is alive and well, and even growing ... just somewhere else. Want to know what happened to Jack Bauer before Season One of 24? How about Buffy and the Scooby Gang after the series finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? More and more shows are expanding their horizons by telling prequels, sequels and even in-between-quels in comic books, or graphic novels.

On November 27,
Futurama comes back in a big way with
Bender's Big Score, an "epic" film involving all the characters from the show that ran on Fox from 1999-2003. The DVD is the first in a series of four direct-to-DVD releases, which will be edited into 16 episodes that will air on Comedy Central in 2008. Fellow Squadder Brad Trechak
gave the disc a positive review last week, which is high praise coming from a big fan of the show as he is.
David X. Cohen, executive producer and show-runner of
Futurama, spoke to me via phone last week. We didn't have much time, only about ten minutes or so, so we got down to the nuts and bolts: how the movies will play on Comedy Central, some information on the show's comeback, a quick preview of the next DVD, and how the Fox executives felt about being ground into all-purpose powder.
