Welcome to our new feature,
TV Squad readers. How well do you know what you think you know about television? Play our little trivia game, Fact or Fiction. We'll state the premise, then tell you the reality, i.e. the fact or the fiction. By the way, if you have ideas for Fact or Fiction, or questions you'd like us to figure out, share with us in the comments.
Fact or Fiction: When Chuck Lorre originally created The Big Bang Theory, the boys were dominated by a nasty neighbor named Katie.
Fact! Chuck Lorre told
Watch magazine's Jim Colluci that a year before
The Big Bang Theory was picked up by CBS, the first pilot had a female character named Katie. She manipulated the guys. "It was like shooting fish in a barrel. It didn't work," Johnny Galecki told Colluci. The problem was that Sheldon, Leonard, Raj and Howard were and are essentially innocents and without maliciousness. The idea of a woman taking advantage of their innocence was not only mean, it wasn't funny. The writers went back to the drawing board -- so to speak -- and, thus, the character of sweet, gentle Penny was born.

Every show has an off-week. Unfortunately, for Jay Leno when he has an off-week, it takes up five hours worth of our time. Almost every guest was less than entertaining, and even most of the comedy bits missed this week. Luckily, there were some redeeming moments throughout, most of which I've included right here for you. See, I just saved you five hours of time.
With Rachel Griffiths appearing this week, it appears that ABC's ban on their actors appearing on Leno's show may have finally been lifted. Unfortunately, she couldn't bring along a clip of
Brothers & Sisters, so I guess they're still feeling a little sour. Or NBC doesn't want to promote a competing network's show too much.

Every once in a while, a show creeps up on the American public and really captures its imagination. Unfortunately, a lot of times that show is in a terrible timeslot on a tiny little network struggling to survive. Such was the case with
Jack & Bobby.
I'd like to think people didn't just automatically assume that this was a biopic about the Kennedys, though it certainly was playing with that notion intentionally by choosing that name. At its core, the show was simply another teen drama; the kind The WB had built a network around by the fall of 2004.
But it was also something more than that. It was an in-depth examination of the genesis of an American hero. How can someone go from being an ordinary person with ordinary problems into the most powerful man on the planet? While Jack and Bobby were typical all-American brothers, it was one of their destiny to rise to the seat of President of the United States by the mid-21st Century. That's the destination.
Jack & Bobby was the journey.

(S04E01) "William was a cheater. He had this bottle-blond tramp across town..." - Nora's mother to Holly
The dysfunctional Walker clan is back, and it didn't take long for the squabbling and worrying and break-ups and tragedies to surface. Things open right away with Nora's feeling of foreboding, and with this family, it's usually warranted. There's generally a nice mix of comedy and drama in
Brothers & Sisters, and this episode followed suit.

ABC's
Eastwick pilot turned out to be a fun and charming mix of light fantasy, romance, and
Desperate Housewives-style drama. Still, it's hard to predict if the quirky series will turn into a hit or end up on the scrap heap with ABC's other recent high-concept series (
Pushing Daisies,
Eli Stone,
Cupid). The chemistry between the show's three leads, Rebecca Romijn, Jamie Ray Newman and Lindsay Price, might be able to keep it afloat for at least one full season.
Eastwick, based on the film
The Witches of Eastwick and on the novel by John Updike, will premiere on Sept. 23 at 10 p.m. ET, ABC
announced today. The network also announced the Sept. 27 premiere of returning drama
Brothers & Sisters, which is expected to continue its fourth season on Sunday nights.

NBC seems to be sending out their screeners in dribs and drabs, so I'm making my way through their fall offerings very slowly. I've already given you previews of both
Community and Trauma, and now we've got
Parenthood, a new series based on a movie that was already turned into a series nearly twenty years ago. Who says Hollywood is out of ideas?
Parenthood is basically a less-melodramatic
Brothers & Sisters. It follows the Braverman clan, a family in Fresno made up of four siblings: Adam (
Peter Krause), Crosby (
Dax Shepard), Sarah (
Maura Tierney), and Julia (
Erika Christensen), along with their children and parents, played by
Craig T. Nelson and
Bonnie Bedelia. They all have their share of drama, but at the end of the day, they're all brought together in the most suburban of pursuits: Little League. Say it with me now: "awwww."

Earlier this week, I let you know of
the ten shows I thought should be renewed. Now it's time to reverse the question and think about the shows that shouldn't be renewed. Yes, there are some shows that should end now, either because they have annoying characters (*cough* Meredith Grey *cough*), are not treated properly by their network (insert here pretty much all shows on FOX), have been on TV for too long and have a hard time being original (I'm talking about you
Survivor), etc.
ER would have been a prime candidate for this list, but NBC finally made the right decision and ended the show a few weeks ago. Note that my list includes some shows that have received early renewals. Still, I think they should be canceled asap. So what other shows, besides
ER, I think should bite the dust? Let's find out!

That's right. According to
The Hollywood Reporter, Clark Griswold himself is starring in a comedy pilot for NBC that's "pretty much a lock" to be picked up as a series.
The show is called
Community and it's described as "
Stripes at a community college." (Hmm. Didn't
Stripes star Bill Murray and Harold Ramis?) If the series is picked up, it will mark Chevy Chase's first full-time primetime series gig.
Months ago, I would've been baffled by this news. The best thing Chase has done in the last ten years was probably his cameo in
Orange County, or his brief appearance on
Family Guy. I thought he'd be stuck in junk like
Zoom and
Funny Money forever, but then he started showing up on shows like
Brothers & Sisters and
Chuck.
