Here's what viewers say Katie Couric should do next

Katie CouricThere have been approximately 400 stories written about CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric in the past few weeks: she's thinking about leaving, she's getting her lowest ratings ever, etc, etc. And now TV viewers are weighing in on what Katie should do.

A Gallup Poll asked 1,016 adults (I'd love to hear why they come up with such numbers, why they didn't keep calling until it was 1100 or at least stop calling at 1000) what Katie should do. And you know what? 46% of respondents say she should stay as anchor of the show! Where are those viewers when she needs them?

Here are some other results from the poll:

Things I Hate About TV: Sunday sports running over into primetime

Joe NamathLet me start this rant by saying that I like sports. No, I love sports. I'm a fan. I get the DirecTV NBA package and the major league baseball games. I can talk to you for hours about stats and players and great games. That said, I hate the way Sunday sports programming drifts over into primetime. This happens primarily on CBS and Fox with the NFL games in the fall and winter, but the other networks have been guilty of staying with the game and then still insisting on showing the primetime schedule after the game is over -- even if that means that an 8 o'clock show begins at 8:45 and your DVR gets all screwed up and you wind up with only 15 minutes of a show you wanted to see!

Desperate HousewivesHere are the weekly ratings, by number of viewers.

If you were to pick a random TV fan off the street (The Street of TV Fans, I guess it would be called) and you asked them, "what is the #1 scripted show on television right now?," I would assume that not everyone would guess the answer to that question. A third of them would probably answer one of the CSI shows, a third would probably say one of the Law and Order shows (or maybe House), and the other third would probably say "what's a scripted show?"

But the answer this week is Desperate Housewives, followed very closely by NCIS. And I would bet no one would guess how high NCIS finishes every week.

Two and a Half MenHere are the weekly TV ratings, by number of viewers.

Even though the picture is from Two and a Half Men (for a change), American Idol got the first two slots this week again. Dancing with the Stars got the third and fifth slots, sandwiching a new CSI. It's really amazing how many shows that CBS has in the top 20 every single week. This week they have 12 shows, and that's not counting the basketball specials. That's wild.

1950s Mike Wallace interviews now online

Mike WallaceTV fans are probably already aware that veteran journalist Mike Wallace had a television career long before 60 Minutes. Twilight Zone fans have probably seen the famous one-on-one interview with Rod Serling he did before the classic sci-fi show premiered (available on one of the Twilight Zone DVDs) on his Mike Wallace Interview show. Now several other interviews from that series have been archived online for everyone to see.

American IdolHere are the weekly TV ratings, by number of viewers.

There's really nothing interesting about the ratings this week (American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, blah, blah, blah), except for the fact that ABC's Primetime got into the top 20 with their "What Would You Do?" special. That and the fact that FOX's 'Til Death is on the list.

The return of How I Met Your Mother made the top 20 too.

2. American Idol - Tues (FOX)

David Letterman made me cringe last night

Andy RooneyAfter Johnny Carson, David Letterman is my favorite late night talk show host of all-time. But last night he made a joke that made me cringe (and I'm pretty cringe-resistant).

He was giving the weekly "Fun Facts" list (doing it on Wednesday this week because he's in repeats tonight and Friday due to of March Madness basketball), and the last joke in the pile was one about Andy Rooney. I don't remember it verbatim, but it was something along the lines of, "Andy Rooney's wife tells him, 'yeah, a--hole, I've noticed," a joke about how Rooney always says the phrase "you ever notice...," which, in all fairness to Rooney, I think has been said more by his impersonators (like Joe Piscopo) than by Rooney himself.
