Before Sneak Previews, people would read movie reviews, sure, but they brought intelligent film criticism to television and became a huge part of pop culture.

This is a tribute from The Nostalgia Critic, and he covers the history of the show, from the start on PBS to the death of Siskel in 1999 to the hosts that eventually replaced them. He probably needs to get a better microphone, but it's well-done.(Slightly NSFW.)
Kennedy was shot and the Challenger Space Shuttle exploded. But one famous tragedy has remained suspiciously ignored, until now.

This week marked the 39th anniversary of Oregon's famed "exploding whale," a beached whale that washed up on the shores of Florence, Oregon. Officials exploded it with almost half a ton of dynamite because they couldn't think of another way to remove the sea creature from the beach. We know go to reporter Paul Linnman who was live at the scene...
Your mind would do whatever it could to see a boobie. It would trick you into thinking two conveniently placed melons were boobies. It would make you think that the Calgon commercial accidentally showed a boobie. It would get you to watch every episode of Benny Hill with the hope of seeing a boobie.

That's how I feel of this recent news post at Newsbusters that claims 2012 star John Cusack uttered a rather nasty word on a recent episode of The Early Show. And no, it wasn't boobie.

Maybe it's just my hearing. Can you hear the word? It's supposed be towards the end of the video after host Harry Smith asks Cusack "Does it seems like 20 years ago already?" in reference to the 20 year anniversary of his classic film Say Anything.
Who knows. But she makes her big return as Amanda next week, and here's the scene. By the way the staff looks at her when she's walking down the hall it's like she rose from the dead or something. Not sure why the other blond in the scene turns around and the first thing she looks at are the Amanda's shoes.

The interview actually took place several days ago so some clips are starting to be released. Here's a first look, where Oprah asks Palin about Levi Johnston.
Update: we love to see comments on our site, but if they go off topic or get into political arguments, they will be deleted. If you want to comment specifically about Palin's appearance on Oprah, that's fine. Other comments will be deleted. Thanks.

What is surprising is that so many adults who grew up with the show still find it so damn funny (or maybe that has more to do with the rise of marijuana use, but beggars can't be users, er, choosers).

In fact, a recent box set of the show's earliest episodes came with a disclaimer that the episodes contained within it were "not for kids." That's also because it contained the rare lost episode from the early 1970s when Grover and Prairie Dawn accidentally wandered into the Plato's Retreat swingers club where they learned the difference between "top" and "bottom".

The point is adults can find just as much to laugh at as their kids do and here are the biggest chortle-makers.
Continue reading Sesame Street's 40th: Five funniest characters

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

A Sesame Street short that got shorted (almost)

As any child of the 80s knows, there is a slew of great mini-cartoons and animation shorts from Sesame Street that belong on yesterday's list of the greatest shorts. Unfortunately, word space and time are cruel mistresses.

There was a sixth I wanted to include but had to go: the famous Baby Climbs the Stairs short. It deserves special mention because it's more emotional teaching than just concrete concepts like numbers or letters. It was also created by W. Lee Savage, the father of Mythbusters host and special effects guy Adam Savage.

That's still no excuse for stealing material, if that is in fact the case with this British ad. UK comic Micky Flanagan claims an ad agency stole a joke from his act for a phone service commercial and is a stone's throw away from filing a lawsuit. Punchline Magazine posted videos of the joke and the ad. Is this just a coincidence or is the ad pulling a Carlos Mencia?

First, listen to Flanagan's joke...
This may be the melatonin you need.

CollegeHumor has uncovered the true reason FOX nixed the action drama from its airwaves. It needed more room for more Seth MacFarlane cartoons about pop-culture spewing families with anthropomorphic pets and American Idol. I never thought I'd long for the good ol' days was Fox was known for quality programming like Bad Orderlies Caught on Tape 2 and When Lawn Equipment Goes Screwy 4.

Misfits is a British show about a group of teens who are struck by lightning and find they can do incredible things, including turn invisible, hear people's thoughts, control time (of course!), and send people into a sexual frenzy. Wow, all this time I've had a superpower and I didn't even know it (I'm talking about hearing people's thoughts). Here's a sneak peek, though it doesn't show that much. It premieres tonight at 8 on E4. It's Heroes + swearing!

But here's another good one -- "Dancing With Myself" sung by Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale).

I must admit, it's hard to get the Billy Idol version out of my head, but the tune was perfect for the wheelchair-bound Artie as he wheels through the school corridors (quite well, I might add) and looks longingly at Tina (who has a secret of her own).

Here's the video straight from our sister site, SlashControl. Which song is your favorite from last night's Glee -- "Defying Gravity," "Dancing With Myself," or "Proud Mary"? (Tell me in the comments if I've missed any!)

Be sure to read Allison's review of the episode, and if you haven't checked out Joel's post on why Artie isn't played by a real-life disabled actor, be sure to throw in your two cents there.

Usually I post videos because they're good or funny or interesting or clever or strange. I'm posting this one to show you the type of humor you're missing if you don't watch Leno's show. Talk about forced and going on too long. Jeez.

Larry asked her about the lawsuit she filed against the pageant, but she didn't want to talk about that and even told Larry he was being "inappropriate." She then talks to someone off-camera and it looks like she's about to walk off the set but then changes her mind (or her handlers changed it for her). She came back after the commercial and said she didn't want questions from viewers.

In her defense, the settlement was private, and that probably includes the reason why it was settled, not just the amount. But she just looks goofy taking off her mic and telling Larry that she can't hear him (even though she can clearly hear him because she answers him). The moral: either answer the questions or just leave the show.

Galaga or something? Last night Jimmy Fallon disclosed that he filmed scenes for the game but the character was ultimately rejected. Luckily there's still footage of the scenes.
They should have given Jimmy more time to get out of his outfit though.

The show featured some great songs, some great lines, and a few surprises about some of the students and faculty. If you haven't watched it yet, I won't give away too much.

My favorite song was "Defying Gravity," the ballad from Wicked, sung in a "diva off" by Rachel (Lea Michele) and Kurt (Chris Colfer), with each performance inter-cut with the other. They both have fantastic voices, and I'm in awe of Colfer's spot-on tone and intonation. Just gorgeous! But I have to agree with Allison that perhaps Rachel has the more Broadway-type voice that jumps off the stage and grabs you.

I don't know, though. It's a tough call as to which has the bigger diva voice. What do you think? If you were a Broadway casting director, who would you choose to sing this song -- Kurt or Rachel?
Finally, Oscar finds the gumption to tell everyone on Sesame Street why he's such a big ol' grouch.
Actually, we have now learned that the movie actor, best known for Spider-Man and Milk and The Pineapple Express, has decided to do a two-month guest role on the ABC soap opera as part of a project he's doing with a filmmaker named Carter.

Franco and Carter are making a documentary called Erased James Franco. His guest turn on 30 Rock may also be part of the movie. Nobody knows for certain.

One thing I do know for certain is that ABC is taking Franco's appearance on GH very seriously. They're working around his schedule, giving him a strangely interesting character to play, and promoting it like mad.
Thankfully, Deal or No Deal host Howie Mandel finally put the last nail in The Jay Leno Show's coffin by giving the big faced host his own desk.
